Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches for Fall 2010

Urban Decay Naked Palette
Urban Decay Naked Palette

Ready to Get Naked?

Urban Decay Naked Palette ($44.00) is new-for-fall and contains twelve shades–eight are incredibly neutral, but four pack a little–much welcome–color punch. There are six permanent and existing shades, one repromoted shade, and five new shades.

The palette includes: Virgin (satin chamois), Sin (champagne), Naked (matte buff nude), Sidecar (cocoa with golden sparkle sheen), Buck (matte nutmeg), Half Baked (subtle, lustrous bronze), Smog (deep coppery bronze), Darkhorse (bronze patina), Toasted (rich copper), Hustle (plum brown satin), Creep (onyx with gold sparkle), Gunmetal (gunmetal gray with silver glitter). The final piece is a double-ended 24/7 Liner with Zero (black) on one side and Whiskey (creamy rich brown) on the other.

  • Virgin is a pale, shimmered nude beige. It’s very, very light, but it’s such a beautiful neutral. It’s a little frosty for a highlighter, particularly on darker skin tones, but it would make for a great all-over wash or pop of light on the inner tear duct.
  • Sin is a champagne with a touch of pink and a frostier finish. This shade is permanently available.
  • Naked is a matte medium beige-brown. It has a very soft, smooth texture–not at all powdery or chalky.
  • Sidecar is a shimmered, medium bronze brown with almost a red undertone. This shade was in the first edition of the Book of Shadows. (I didn’t see it on Urban Decay’s website at all.)
  • Buck is a matte darkened beige-brown. It’s really a darker version of Naked. It has the same silky smooth texture and rich color pay off of Naked, too.
  • Half Baked is a coppery bronze with a frost-metallic finish. This shade is permanently available.
  • Smog is a medium dark bronze with a gilded bronze sheen. This shade is permanently available.
  • Darkhorse is a darkened deep chocolate brown with flecks of bronze.
  • Toasted is a medium dark pinky brown with a shimmery finish. This shade is permanently available.
  • Hustle is a dark plummy chocolate brown with a soft shimmer finish.
  • Creep is a darkened blue-black base with silver and teal shimmer. Urban Decay said “onyx with gold glitter” but I really didn’t see the gold.
  • Gunmetal is a blue-gray metallic that really must be seen to be appreciated. It almost feels like a duochrome, because it flashes blue but it’s dark and smoldering. This shade is permanently available.

The palette also contains a double-ended eyeliner, and Zero is your basic creamy black with a near-matte finish–if you’re an Urban Decay palette collector, you probably have enough Zero eyeliners to get you through the next twenty years. However, it also contains Whiskey, which is a brand new shade of creamy chocolate brown with red undertones. It’s very similar to Bourbon, but it seems a little lighter and doesn’t have the shimmer.

It’s packaged in a velvety chocolate brown exterior, which makes it look sleek and sophisticated–it’s probably one of the classier products I’ve seen come from the brand, actually. It feels very luxe and not quite Urban Decay–but I think it’s a good thing, and it’s nice to see. This is also an amazing value palette. The palette contains 12 x 0.05 oz. eyeshadows, plus 2 x 0.02 oz. liners and a miniature-sized Primer Potion of 0.13 fl. oz. (I actually originally thought it came sans UDPP, because I just received the palette… but the back of it says you do get it, so it probably tags along in a plastic package, but not included in the actual palette case.) The real coup here is the twelve full-size eyeshadows–yes, that’s right–a $17 full-size eyeshadow from Urban Decay contains 0.05 oz. of product, which is exactly what we have here–a value of $204.

I think this is one of Urban Decay’s best palettes to date, actually. It combines incomparable value for the price tag, but the high quality of their eyeshadows really comes through, too. There are no glittery, fussy shades here (and I can’t tell you how happy I am to NOT see Midnight Cowboy Rides Again!). Every shade is soft, smooth, and richly pigmented–even the mattes. For those with a lot of palettes, it may feel a bit redundant, as there are seven shades in it that we’ve seen again–but still five we haven’t. Not that I’m getting through an eyeshadow pan any time soon, but at least you can feel at ease if you fall in love with one of those seven.

If you want to know more about how products are evaluated, read out Rating System FAQ! 🙂

  • Product: 30/30
  • Value: 10/10
  • Ease of Use: 5/5
  • Packaging: 5/5

RECOMMENDATION: If you’re an eyeshadow fiend and love yourself some shimmery finishes, Urban Decay’s new Naked palette won’t disappoint. It even includes two matte shades–something I’ve remarked on for the lack thereof in previous palettes–and a good mix of neutrals, smoldering neutrals, and darker, smokier colors. There is nothing about this palette that’s a miss.

AVAILABILITY: June 29th @ Urban Decay; around August 1st @ Sephora, ULTA, Macy’s, Beauty.com

oh my godddd I love this!!! thank you urban decay!! amazing. This is way better than alice in wonderland pallet for us neutral gals!

Danielle Avatar

The good news? The only color I have from this palette is Smog from the Summer of Love palette, so I can justify getting this! I also DON’T have Zero yet, and I’m super excited about the great value! Thanks for the post Christine… when does it go on sale?

Danielle Avatar

Oops, totally missed “Available June 29th” Sorry about that 😉

I know, I’m a new MU addict, and an even more recent UD convert. I only got into collecting RIGHT after the AIW palette sold out everywhere… 🙁 LOL. Super excited about this though; will definitely be ordering on Tuesday!

Ashley Avatar

Wow, this is a really nice neutral palette! I’m glad to see that there aren’t any super glittery crappy shades like Midnight Cowboy. I might have to seriously think about this one!

Sally Avatar

Ok, I just keep coming back to this post and creeping on the beauty that is this palette. Haha.
Christine, I forgot to ask – do you know if it’s supposed to be original PP or Sin?

Bridget Avatar

I want this!! I don’t have anything by UD, because they don’t sell it in my country 🙁 I’m going to the UK on Tuesday though and UDPP is on my shopping list, I’m off to inspect the UK website to see when it will be released there, hopefully while I’m over there! x

lucy x Avatar

hey Bridget 🙂
We don’t have a UD website here in the UK but you can get it at some outlets of Debenhams, Boots and House of Fraser. Happy shopping! 😀 xx

Kaylabella Avatar

This will be mine! Finally I can get all of the colors I’ve been dying for! And the best part? I only have two of the twelve shades! So excited!

Claudia Avatar

Is this a limited edition or will it be permanent palette? I ask because I think a LOT of people will be getting it and I was going to wait until my birthday to get it (July) =)

Hanna Avatar

I know i was thinking the same thing. So stupid that they don’t ship to Canada so I really depend on Sephora as well. Better be available on their website since i live 5 hours away from “my” Sephora.

I N E E D this!
I am fairly new to UD, so i don’t think I have any of the colours and I don’t have Zero either!

Leah Avatar

Ahhh! I want this SO bad, but I’m ridiculously broke right now. If I waited a month or two do you think I’d still be able to track one down?

Alyssa Avatar

thanks so much for the post, Christine! i can’t wait to see your looks with this. 🙂 will this palette be limited edition? (i REALLY hope not!)

Jennifer Avatar

OMG!!!! I want this soooooo bad!! I love UD’s shadows. I’m so happy to see a palette that is neutral and mostly glitter free.

Laurie Avatar

Actually, it was on the sephora website since the 30th. It sold out right away, and went back on this morning, the 7th, and sold out again. I suggest getting on the mailing list for when it comes back! That’s what I did!

Chester Avatar

This palette looks very promising! It would be my first UD product. I’d be soo happy if UDPP is included since I want to try it.

Any recs on where I can find it? They don’t sell UD in my country but I’ll be in the US in July. Where do I look for UD?

Christine Avatar

On the back of the palette, it says that UDPP is included, so it should be. Since I got mine from PR, it didn’t come with any packaging – just the palette!

I’m not 100% sure yet, but Sephora will probably carry these at some point, so you could try there!

Katie Avatar

Hi Christine! Do you know if the palette will be sold in Sephora on the 29th as well? Will it even be sold in Sephora? Thanks so much for the info – I think my heart stopped when I saw the photos/swatches. 🙂

rachel Avatar

I’ve been in the mood for some new make up but nothing has really seemed quite right to give my heart to and then *swoon* I see this! Looks puuuuuuurfect!

Carrie Avatar

OMFG!!! This palette looks simply amazing. I luv UD shadows, but most of their palettes look very childish to me. I don’t want pull out drawers, hidden panels, etc. This one is chic & classic, absolute perfection! I hope Sephora will carry it, but I will order from UD website if necessary. Thanks for the great pics & swatches!

Rosie Avatar

There are 7 shades in here that I don’t have. It’s freakin’ beautiful. It’s perfect for student teaching this upcoming fall! Then I can have fun with Urban Decay in a “professional” way! For fun and for school! Woo hoo! Okay, I’m way too excited!

Anita Avatar

Hey Christine, do you think this palette would work for / show up on us warmer darker skinned ladies (NC 35+)? The only Urban Decay eye shadows I have are Baked, Half-Baked and Scandal. Wondering if it’s worth my while to pick this up too. I’ve only dipped my toes in the Urban Decay wells of goodness. Let me know what you think!
Thank you in advance! Hope you’re having a good summer thus far!

rocks Avatar

Hey, do you think that if I buy this palette I won’t need to buy any eyeshadows (at least from the nude/natural range) until I run out of this? Well, cosmetics are expensive, so I’m always trying to save something and this palette you gave max ratings while Dior or Chanel ones get a lil less…

Christine Avatar

In order to get an A+, it has to hit all points – and it’s REALLY hard for any brand, let alone a high-end designer brand like Dior or Chanel, to get perfect marks on value. It’s just so, so rare for that to happen.

I think this could definitely suffice for neutrals for awhile, though 🙂

zoe77 Avatar

wow i am LOVING this!!!!!!! kind of unexpected, but in a good way definately! any word on when youll have pics/details regarding alice and olivia for mac? im seriously feening for info on that!!!!!!!

rashmi Avatar

will surelly buy when it comes to sephora …
love the review and u r awesome in doing ur work right in everyway …
not at all bias truelly ur style
love u n temptalia

Jemma Avatar

This is WAYYYY better than Too Faced’s Naked Eyeshadow whatever… and you’re right Christine! The value is much better… soooo in love with this palette! Thank you for the preview!

Katie Avatar

Do you know if they plan to sell the Whiskey eyeliner on it’s own? If so I’m totally getting it! My staple eyeliner right now is Bourbon, but if they had a formula without shimmer that would make me happy. 🙂

Rowan Avatar

I need this!!!! I’ve never gotten any other of the Urban Decay palettes because I simply could not justify all those bright beautiful colors I’d never wear. But this one is soooo beautiful and totally worth the money!

xMissxAndristx Avatar

omg i need this!!!!! I hope they release whiskey as a single too!! I’ve wanted a non-sparkly brown for ages!!!! ahhhh i’m so excited!!!!

Miss Molly Avatar

I am wanting this so badly after seeing your swatches! Your swatches look so much smoother than what UD posted on their facebook.
I don’t know how you review all the makeup that you do, but please continue to be amazing!

lulee Avatar

love the packaging, love the value, HATE the colors. i can not wear browns for the life of me. i think it would be incredible if they released a palette like this with colors *swoon*

Ellie Avatar

This looks gorgeous! I would totally get it since I’m a neutral loving girl if I didn’t have all of the perm colors already in Book of Shadows 2 and the Alice in Wonderland one..

Nicole Avatar

I have been a serious Urban Decay skeptic for a while. But I took the plunge and bought a few individual shadows, and I LOVE THEM. Thus…I think I need this palette!! LOL. I’m loving neutrals lately…give me more!

Tiffany Avatar

I love the color! I have bourbon but I would like one without glitter sometimes. Will this become part of the line or just in this palette?

Hannah Avatar

I love neutrals, and I love UD’s eyeshadow formulas (when there isn’t too much chunky glitter involved), so naturally I CANNOT WAIT for this pallet!!

Carrie Avatar

Gorgeous! I’m obsessed w/ their eye shadows and eye liners, and this looks like the most sophisticated eye palette they’ve released so far.

Valentine Avatar

I LOVE neutrals and especially bronzy, golden browns, so I’ll definitely seek this out in person. Since many of the shades are similar, I kinda wish they’d cut the pallet in half and sold it for half the price. I do have a quick question though–Can you please tell me about how big the pallet is? As in, how many inches lengthwise?

Jula Avatar

This is a must have for me. But do you think that some of the colors are similar to MAC, like Woodwinked, All that Glitters, etc.? Because I have also been wanting to get a MAC pro palette with a lot of the popular neutral shades, but I don’t want to get two palettes with the same thing, you know? Any advice?

Rissy Avatar

If I have those colors from mac already, would you still suggest getting this pallete? I do love UD but do need to save some money too. :/

Li Ming Avatar

Ahh…I have almost all those MAC e/s dupes for this palette…only missing 3.
I like the packaging and convenience of this palette but I feel like I should not haul anymore…and actually I have never tried UD e/s…their cult favourite 24/7 liners don’t work for me. Love their UDPP though.
I am semi-glad that it is permanent…but also semi-terrified that it is. Don’t know if I can hold off from caving… :s
But I like how you point out (hence A+) that this palette is very versatile for neutral looks.

Li Ming Avatar

I caved…I bought it. The Sephora sales associates had not heard it being permanent in Canada. Man, I wish some of them were more knowledgeable in this sense. Still don’t know if Canada Sephora locations will carry Bobbi Brown like the US locations. Argh.

LNU Avatar

The palettes colors don’t particularly strike me, but I’m really excited they released five new shades, that all of them contain no glitter, they released a new brown liner with no glitter (thank god), and that the packaging is SO cute and simple!

Angela0804 Avatar

This is a nice palette. I have 3 of the UD colors but this would be a great overnight/travel palette. I may just pick it up.

Isheeta Avatar

Wow this is a gorgeous palette! I have UD Deluxe shadow box.. I love UD shadow texture! The best thing is that I don’t have any of the shadows in this new box!

Laura Avatar

An irresistible palette ! It’s really not so expensive, 12 colors + 1 double-eyeliner, for only $44. Will definitely buy it when the chance comes !! So pretty colors…

SiaM Avatar

All the colors look super great, Can’t have enough neutrals and the other shimmery colors look just awesome to complete a look =) This one is definitely worth it!!!

Lizz M. Avatar

You know, I’ve never really had the urge to buy an Urban Decay palette (with the exception of the Alice palette, but I bought that for my sis’s birthday – dual use, haha) but this I may have to get. I love the idea behind it and the fact thier amping it up with the new shades and some mattes… a person can only take so much shimmer, ha.

And seriously, that packaging is so sleek! Yup, going on the wish-list now.

Rachel Avatar

Does this mean no Book of Shadows Vol. 3? Only gripe I have for this palette is ANOTHER zero eyeliner. Ugh, I have at least ten small zero pencils that I never use. I wish they’d have included Crash, Oil Slick or Stash instead. [/end rant] I will still buy this 🙂

Christine Avatar

No, it just means it’s not coming out yet 🙂 I have heard we’re looking at more like a September launch — and that’s probably on UD.com, so not yet.

At least they also give you a new one! Better than just Zero, LOL. I think they need to do ZeroMinus. Super black!

Kelly C. Avatar

Oh man, I’ve been jonesing so hard for a neutral eyeshadow palatte. Thank you, Urban Decay! I will fight to get this one : D

Violet Avatar

This is a must-buy for me! I am a huge fan of Urban Decay’s eyeshadows – I have about 30 of them – but it just so happens that *none* of these are already in my stash. The only thing I wish were different is that I’d like to see Corrupt eyeliner from last year’s holiday collection back… but I still want this for the shadows!

xMissxAndristx Avatar

Last year they released 4 exclusive eyeliners as permanents… then this spring we got Eldorado switched from exclusive to permanent. so maybe if we cross our fingers we’ll get whiskey and corrupt as permantents.

Emma Avatar

OHMYGODNESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! This palette looks amazinggggggg! I need to order it the SECOND it comes out! June 29th! That’s actually the same day I get my braces of hahahaha. It’s gonna be a great day!

Michelle Avatar

Heya Christine,

Great review as always! Loooove the colors on this palette, i’m so excited! Being I earn point in Sephora and on thru UD, I think I’m gonna have to wait and get this from Sephora. One thing though, do you think they will run out of this fast? I don’t want this to be like the mac to the beach collection nightmare. 😛

Bernice Avatar

Christine! I can’t help but keep coming back to this post! I can’t stop gawking over the gorgeous colours! Neutrals have never looked so good! I completely agree with you that it is a steal at $44 USD but it won’t be such a great deal if my Canadian Sephoras have it because even when an Urban Decay palette is $36 USD it’s $47 CDN (before our 12% taxes) and this costs more.. nd I’m dreading the price a little 🙁 Just a little annoyed becos our dollars are almost at par with each other 🙁

But that won’t stop me from coming back to this post 😛
Thanks again Christine for the fab swatches 😀

Christine Avatar

Aww! So glad it’s caught your eye, though. Though it’s not entirely comforting, I presume that the singles cost more in CDN, too, so it’s still a good value. I have no idea what logic or reasoning goes on for the way brands price themselves in different countries. I wonder if they have to pay higher taxes, importation costs, etc. that somehow justifies it. No clue, though.

angelicbb Avatar

THIS LOOKS AMAZING<3
Amazing swatches as usual and I think I will have to crash and get this from sephora 🙂
Do you know if this is limited edition?? I hope not :/

Wendy M. Avatar

Sweet baby Jesus.
I MUST have this!
This will be my first purchase from UD and this palette looks gorgeous AND promising! 😀

gemin Avatar

Are you kidding me with this palette!? I need this with all my heart. All of it. When does this come out!?? FALL! Too far away! I agree Thank God no Midnight Cowboy Rides Anywhere!

amy Avatar

These are gorgeous. I love how sophisticated and classy these colours are together. It is very different in comparison to most of the other U/D palettes that are very funky and colourful.

Lisa Avatar

I’m kind of bummed that I just got the summer of love palate two days ago, I’m not loving the glitter fall out from 2/4 shadows + random purple shadow, haha, I wish I had waited for this! I think I’ll get it anyways though, you can never have too much makeup…

Rosie Avatar

Haha I showed my friend this post at dinner tonight and we were totally lusting over it together. Thanks for reporting it’s permanent though, now I can take a breather and wait until a F&F to get it 30% off!

NIKKI Avatar

so looking forward to getting this!
i love my neutrals but sometimes i want something extra and more sultry and smoky
perfect palette!

Kesh Avatar

this is a must have palette for my collection!
