Urban Decay Backtalk & Carnal Matte Revolution Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Urban Decay Backtalk Matte Revolution Lipstick

Urban Decay Backtalk Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte mauve-nude pink.” It’s a muted, medium pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. On me, it leans a little warm against my undertones, but it looks more cool-toned in the tube (to my eye). It had full color coverage that applied smoothly and evenly as the consistency was creamy and glided across the lips without dragging. This shade lasted for five and a half hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Mehr (P, $16.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Indian Rose (P, $50.00) is darker, glossier. Kat Von D Lovecraft (P, $21.00) is less glossy. Givenchy Rose d’Exception (206) (LE, $36.00) is warmer. NARS Anna (P, $32.00) is glossier. NARS Vanessa (P, $32.00) is lighter, glossier. NARS Anita (P, $32.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier. ColourPop Squeeze (LE, $5.00) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Addison (LE, $32.00) is lighter. Maybelline Touch of Spice (P, $7.99) is darker, warmer. Maybelline Touch of Spice (P, $7.99) is darker, warmer. ColourPop Solow (P, $6.00) is lighter, less glossy. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay Carnal Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte medium warn nude.” It’s a muted, medium-dark orange-brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that covered the lips with smooth, even color without dragging during application. The consistency was comfortable while the color lasted for seven hours on me. Maybelline Maple Kiss (925) (P, $7.49) is brighter, glossier. MAC Persistence (P, $16.00) is darker, more muted. NARS Femme Fleur (LE, $26.00) is brighter. Maybelline Clay Crush (P, $7.99) is lighter. NARS Het Loo (P, $25.00) is warmer. MAC Mocha (P, $16.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Both of these shades will be exclusive to UrbanDecay.com and freestanding Urban Decay stores beginning mid-August.

Formula Summary | Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a new formula releasing on July 8th (later for retailers). There are eleven shades in the range with two exclusive to Urban Decay’s website and freestanding stores. The formula is supposed to be smooth, pigmented, creamy, and “provide long-lasting moisture.” It’s a very pigmented, semi-matte to natural finish formula that wears a really, really long time and wears away evenly without bleeding or feathering. My only issue with these is that they’re more of a satin finish than a true matte one, but if that’s not a deal-breaker, they’re worth checking out. I was extremely impressed by how long-wearing the formula was without being drying. I could wear a shade from 9AM to 9PM and not once think, “I really wish I could apply lip balm.” Some shades have more slip than others, and as a result, the ones with more slip have a more satin-like sheen to them, while a couple were less creamy and applied with more of a semi-matte finish from the get-go. Most shades wore down to a traditional matte (but not liquid lipstick flat-matte finish) within an hour to two of wear. The texture is significantly less creamy with a lot less slip compared to the Sheer Revolution and original Revolution formulas, which have a much more luminous sheen with a slight tackiness to the texture, whereas these have no tackiness and a more velvety feel (they remind me of NARS Audacious Lipsticks in that respect). These hug the lips more as a result but surprisingly, they’re very comfortable to wear. What’s particularly nice is that the texture has some creaminess and weight to it, so while it can transfer onto cups and the like, there’s so much of it that it doesn’t wear away the color, and you can also smooth out any smudges if you dabbed with a napkin. There was no discernible scent or taste.

I love backtalk but it might be because it looks very similar to my favorite lipstick by MAC which is Brave! I will probably purchase it anyway! Especially since it got the tempt skis recommends stamp of approval lol! It’s probably gonna replace Brave for me 🙂

Hmm, I may give this one a try, since the formula seems to be great and the price is not too steep. I’m a bit more wary of buying expensive lipstick after the estee lauder color envy sculpting lipstick I got doesn’t meet my expectations. It settles into my lip lines and makes my lip feel dry. I should have just bought another Nars audacious. That lipstick is fabulous!

Finally! I messaged UD’s customer service about the website exclusive shades and they seemed quite confused about when these would release. I’m totally getting Backtalk, it looks lovely on you!

Yuan Avatar

backtalk is definitely my color!!!. but I’ve purchased too many lipsticks lately gonna wait till …maybe sephora’a next vib sale!

Christina Avatar

Backtalk is a colour I’d probably wear often. Carnal is too warm for me.

Gee, Christine, you’re really making me want to buy the Cocoa Mirage quad. I’m not into browns in general, but it just looks so good on you, especially with that teal eyeliner!

Okay, I think I really need Carnal! Especially as I’ve been really missing my lost Mac Mocha. Backtalk looks lovely on you – I already have Mac Mehr and I love it, but find it hard to wear because of how purple it pulls on me and clashes with my yellow-olive skintone, so I don’t suppose I’ll have any luck with it either.

Backtalk is gorgeous and shall definitely be mine. Still hope one day UD will release a proper matte, but a demi-“modern matte” satin is something they’re good at and that color is ridiculously beautiful.

Celia Avatar

Right? It’s so strange. Brands will come up with a million ways to avoid the word satin. It’s a satin lol. Demi-matte, modern matte, etc…ways to say not really matte 😛 Which is funny since they can see us all flocking to liquid lipsticks and other ultra matte formulas (like NARS Pure Matte) but aren’t releasing proper mattes. I would love to have a true UD matte! Imagine how cool a truly well-done UD liquid lipstick ultra-matte line could be. So many brands are going all out on the color now. It would be nice to see UD return to loads of color with an ultra-matte formula and fill in all the many missing tones generally available (more dove and steel grays that run true instead of blue, very bright blues that aren’t black-blues, way more spectra of orange, etc).

I did order NYX’s new liquid lipsticks in some fun colors but it always takes forever to get direct orders from them for me.

Celia Avatar

Will do 🙂 Just got the shipping notification but only because I happened to check the promotions tab on gmail. The email went to the promo section instead of my general section so might be worth checking around tabs to see if it lands somewhere unexpected 😉 The label hasn’t been processed yet but it’s something!

Backtalk is amazing and I need it. I was disappointed at the lack of more muted pinks in this range so I’m really excited. I picked up Bittersweet and After Dark (which reminds me of one of my favorite lipsticks, TF Violet Fatale, which I’m so afraid of using up) and the formula is fantastic, so I can’t get my hands on this one soon enough!

Nancy T Avatar

I normally don’t go after light pinky shades because they tend to look really off on me, ie; Maybelline Blushing Bud, but this one appears to have a richer more pigmented look with more depth to it….. Or might I be better off with one of the Nars Audacious dupes? I tried Anna on last night, and it looked quite nice! When I go back, I will try on Anita as well.

helen Avatar

Love, love, love Backtalk on you Christine. It looks like that perfect pink/nude combo that is so difficult to fine. So this is when us Canadians are (almost always) out of luck. I will look at the NARS dupes.

Celia Avatar

Yeah, that’s true at least. UD you can at least see where they could call them almost demi-matte (or “near matte” or some other randomly coined term to describe being a satin that is slightly matte inspired), but with BITE I am totally lost as to how they can call those shades matte at all. I love my Barberry tube, but come on now that isn’t remotely matte!

Tangie Wimberly Avatar

Those are pretty. Nice , Mite check them out once available for ordering. I already have 1993 and The lip pencil. I’m loving them.

Kris Avatar

Carnal is my kind of color and I love UD lipstick, but I’ve vowed to not buy any more lipstick until I’ve finished using some of the ones I already have. I’ll keep it on my radar though.

Christine, I love your eye makeup in these photos! So pretty!

Rachel R. Avatar

I must have Backtalk. So much prettier than I thought. Carnal reminds me of one of my favorite Wet N Wild shade, Bebop from the Fergie collection.

Jade Avatar

I was bug eyed with lust before I finished the description for Backtalk, but unfortunately I think it will come up too deep/dark on me. Funny how different my skin makes shades look at NC15 compared to when I’m NC20.

Roxanne Avatar

I’m so glad you put swatches up of these! I have been searching high and low for any info from Urban Decay ever since I saw their product blurb on the site. Thanks for being the only place I’ve seen with any indication of their release date too 🙂

Ruby Avatar

Is Bactalk still available in UD.com? Cant seem to find that shade there.urgh!im dying to buy that shade.soo pretty.any store that still have Backtalk?

Shawna Avatar

Oddly specific question, but would this be a good dupe for Nars Sex Machine? It’s my favorite MLBB but the formula doesn’t last on me at all (and I do know I’m pretty much alone in that). I’ve been looking everywhere for a replacement! Thank you!
