ULTA Bone Brilliant Color Eyeshadow
ULTA Brilliant Color Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.12 oz.) recently popped online, and I couldn’t resist trying them when they were buy one, get one free (and they’re B1G1 still right now, actually!). If you’re familiar with L’Oreal’s Infallible Eyeshadow, Lancome Infinite Color Design Eyeshadow, or Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense, this formula will be recognizable. It is a loosely pressed eyeshadow; it is, in general, more of a pressed eyeshadow than a loose one, but it isn’t pressed as firmly as true pressed eyeshadows. It can be used wet or dry, depending on what you’re looking for. ULTA doesn’t have nearly as grand a description as the previously mentioned formulas do; ULTA says these “[offer] the comfort of a cream and the ease of application only a powder can deliver.” They’re supposed to be long-wearing (but no specific hour-length is given) and crease-resistant.
Bone Brilliant Color Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a pale, light beige with subtle warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had good color payoff whether it was used dry or damp, and I was able to use it with a dampened brush even though it had more of a matte finish. The texture was very soft and finely-milled–just a little powdery. It wore well for eight hours on me and was lightly creased after nine hours of wear. Too Faced White Chocolate (P, $16.00) is darker, warmer. bareMinerals Celebrate (LE) is more shimmery. Too Faced Egg Nog (LE, $16.00) is similar. Too Faced Cream Colored Ponies (LE, $16.00) is matte. Too Faced Snow Angel (LE, $16.00) is matte. theBalm B1 (LE, $16.00) is warmer, darker, matte. Too Faced Dainty (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. bareMinerals Boss Lady (LE) is cooler-toned. Disney by Sephora A Wish (LE) is darker. theBalm Adagio (P, $16.00) is matte. Urban Decay Anonymous (LE, $18.00) is warmer. L’Oreal Endless Pearl (P, $7.99) is slightly more matte. See comparison swatches.
Taupe Brilliant Color Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium brown with a hint of a grayish tone, but it had stronger warm, red-orange undertones and a frosted finish. The pigmentation was excellent whether used dry or wet–intense either way. The texture was soft, velvety, and smooth. It wore well for nine hours before starting to crease. I thought L’Oreal Amber Rush might be similar, but it is much warmer and redder. Urban Decay Mugshot (P, $18.00) is darker, grayer. MAC Until Dawn #1 (LE, $21.00) is similar. Urban Decay Stray Dog (LE, $18.00) is darker. Bobbi Brown Stormy Grey (LE, $21.00) is darker, grayer. See comparison swatches.
Mink Brilliant Color Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a dark, cool-toned brown with a satin-matte finish–a very subtle sheen so it isn’t totally matte. It had fairly good pigmentation applied dry, and it was slightly better applied with a dampened brush, but it was about the same. The color was buildable, though, so in practice, it can get quite intense as you layer. The texture wasn’t as soft or as blendable as the other two shades. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading. bareMinerals Perspective (LE) is slightly darker. theBalm Matt Ramirez (LE, $16.00) is more matte. MAC Najm el Lail (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Showstopper (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Concrete (P, $15.00) is more matte, darker. bareMinerals Apropos (P) is similar. See comparison swatches.

Oh wow, I was afraid to try these and be disappointed but they look gorgeous! Especially that Mink color! 😀
They’re really nice overall! Giorgio Armani’s ETKs are still my very favorite–I think they actually have depth and more dimension, but they’re over three times the price–but Lancome, L’Oreal, and now ULTA are all quite comparable. I’m a huge fan of this type of formula, so I have no problems seeing it in four ranges now 😉 More the merrier.
Taupe is a lovely shade!
It is!
I’m actually really impressed with these. The ULTA brand makeup I have tried previously seemed like the makeup little girls play with when playing dress up. The color payoff was horrible, and I pretty much gave up on the brand. This product makes me want to give them a second chance.
I’ve never tried ULTA’s makeup before, actually! This was a pleasant surprise. The packaging actually felt sturdier and less typical drugstore.
I’m impressed too. If Bone turns out the just the way I want it, my search for a beige satin browbone highlighter might be over.
I tried a couple things. I really like their automatic lipliners–I think it’s one of the best DS options–right up there with Revlon, NYX and Rimmel. They’re comfortable to wear on their own as a matte lip color.
I did not like their lip butter–was supposed to be hydrating but it just caused chapped lips. But to be fair, lots of things chap my lips (including Revlon’s) and the color seemed just right.
Wow these look nice! And that’s a beautiful look you created Christine!! I think I want Mink now lol
It’s a great smoky brown!
argh pffftbh of course I just put in an ulta order last night and didn’t see these.
I saw these and was like, hmmmm, could they be… I must try. It was nearly all I ordered, lol!
I always overlook the Ulta brand of makeup, but these look really nice!
This was my first time trying their brand!
These are really pretty, I’ll have to go check them out!
Definitely worth a look 🙂
That is one warm taupe! Too bad for me 🙁
Aww!
Hello Christine. This is my first comment.
I’m from Brazil.
I’m so glad to be here…!
You don’t know how helpful your blog is for me !!!!!!!
Thanks for all you do!
Please tell me what did you use on your waterline? MAC Fluidline ‘Sassy Moss’?

Happy first comment! Thank you!
RATS!!! Hubby just got back last night from a golfing get-away in the US and made an ULTA trip for me. If I’d known about these, I’d have had him pick up Taupe for me. Oh well, we’re going to Buffalo in a few weeks so maybe I’ll pick this one up then.
I called last week, and they weren’t in-stores yet, so maybe it’ll work out 🙂
The new packaging looks nice! Definitely an upgrade from what I remember. I remember purchasing ULTA Bone years ago (probably still have it somewhere in a freestyle palette) and thinking the quality was great. For my skintone, it worked as an all-over base to just even out the eyelid color and subtly cover redness
It’s a good brow highlighter on me!
These look fantastic! I adore the Armani and the L’oreal versions, so I’ll definitely check these ones out.
I think if you like both of those, you’ll like these, assuming there’s not too much overlap. They do remind me more of the L’Oreal range than GA’s (which I think somehow manages to stand out still!).
This look so good — thank you for reviewing them, Christine! We don’t have Ulta up in Canada, but I do have two of their pressed eyeshadows (which, surprisingly, I adore). I’ll put these on my US list just in case 😉
I wish they were cheaper, though! It’s strange to see a store-brand product that’s more expensive than the mainstream one it’s copying. Perhaps they were made to be on sale?
I feel that way about 70% of drugstore products, and I presume it’s because most people don’t pay full price because every other week it’s on sale. Although, with the ULTA ones, they seem to be running BOGO, which is better than a lot of drugstore brands (those deals seem to be buy one, get one 50% off, so it’s really only 25% off).
Americans are weird. 😛 Our sales tend to be a general 15-20% off brand X on a weekly basis, with a really good sale once or twice a year: eg. Rexall will do 50% off all of their lip products in the spring (including higher-end brands like theBalm), or 50% off all of their eye products in the fall, etc. I have seen BOGO sales, though — maybe it only *seems* different because we don’t have as many in-store brands!
Ulta’s store brand is pretty much constantly on sale, and even if you didn’t WANT two products to do BOGO on, they’ve constantly got a $3.50 off a $10 purchase going, usually. While you usually only hear about it because people are annoyed you can’t use it on the prestige brands, if you were heading in for one of these $10 eyeshadows, it’d be perfect!
Now that we have an ULTA at my local mall, ULTA has been my “go-to” store most of the time for DS products, mainly because of those coupons! Between the coupons, sales, and the fact they’re quite a bit cheaper than Walgreen’s & CVS (my local chains), I end up saving quite a bit! If there’s a new DS product I’m interested in, I go through all the newspaper inserts and make my lists based on sales.
I basically do the same you do. I also make an ongoing “Keep an Eye” List for products I want to check out or restock–and I check this list whenever I spot a sale. I check out nouveaucheap, newspapers, online coupon sites, drugstore ads, etc.
CVS has a beauty club you can join too (for every $50 spent, $5 extrabucks to spend). Treat that like cash, and stack those with coupons sent to your inbox (sent every Thursday for me). Then, stack all those with any coupons that come up in the coupon printer in store and combine all this with an ongoing sale.
Thanks for the heads up! We don’t have Ulta stores up here, but I’ll certainly keep that in mind if I do a US trip anytime soon 😉 I have definitely read tweets &etc. about the $10 coupons, but only about how you can’t use them on prestige brands — it never occurred to me how great they’d be if you were picking up a product like this!
For a second I thought they were cream shadows! I have never tried Ulta makeup despite their constant sales..should probably start with these 😀
They were my first ULTA products 😀
Bone looks like it would be a really useful shade for me!
Also, I could kind of stare at the mink shade just in the pan for ages…so velvety… 😀
Haha! It does look very smooth in the pot!
I’m really impressed by these! The Ulta brand eyeshadows that I have tried in the past never seemed to have good color payoff or a nice texture to work with. The taupe would be a nice addition to my collection!
Oh, that’s nice to know! These are my first ULTA-brand try!
Because of the way Bone looks in the pot, I thought they were cream eyeshadows!XD Still look nice though and with Ulta’s B1G1 AND the $3.50 off $10 coupons, they’d be a nice addition. Bone looks nice and Taupe is pretty.
Definitely! I got mine BOGO and 20% off!
That combination of eyeshadow looks amazing on you Christine!!!! Please reveiw the new Chanel perfume CUIR DE RUSSIE
Thanks a lot, Alia!
I’m liking these! I have to buy Bone and maybe more. They look good on you.
Thanks a lot, Valerie 🙂
I haven’t seen those yet, but will definitely check them out! Thanks for the heads up!
Hope you can see them in person soon!
Will you be reviewing the rest of the colors Christine? These look amazing!
I hope to!
Your website is informative and helpful. I enjoy being a subscriber. I have ventured to buy and try new products because of your detailed reviews. Thanks Christine!!
Thank you so much, Denisse! xo
I’m surprised at how good these look. As I have an Ulta right around the corner, I’ve purchased a few store brand products and haven’t cared for them. The brushes are satisfactory but the pencils are so hard. I’m now addicted to UD anyway and have the Vault eye liners.
These are simply gorgeous, especially with your application. I’d drop $10.00 on two without a thought.
They look beautiful on you.
Ulta always has discounts on top of the price you pay for products and my store has a large selection of UD and skincare that I use. They also have hair products and make up storage and
bags although not big enough for addicts like me. They are good for travel and purses.
Thank you for this and all reviews. You help me immensely in deciding what to buy and what to leave alone.
These are my first purchase from ULTA’s actual branded range – haven’t tried them before, but these were quite nice! Seems like I should be wary about trying just anything from them, though!
