Too Faced Natural Matte Eyeshadow Palette (2018) Review & Swatches
Natural Matte
Too Faced Natural Matte Eye Shadow Collection (2018) ($38.00 for 0.45 oz.) is a new, permanent palette that replaces the previously-released Natural Matte palette. The new palette features several new shades, though, so it is similar in concept but not as much in color-to-color. I think that the formula is denser and smoother–more velvety with greater thickness, so most shades are less dry and less thin compared to the previous palette–which made it easier to work with on bare skin for me. I think the quality was more consistent, too, throughout the palette, so as long as you don’t mind a little powderiness (because they’re so soft) and tend to use eyeshadow primer (they could have been longer wearing on their own), I could see it working well.

Heaven
Heaven is a bright, yellowed beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff in a single layer, though there was some powderiness in the pan due to how soft and finely-milled the consistency was. This shade stayed on well for seven hours on me.

Sexpert
Sexpert is a medium brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque and buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. It had a soft, smooth consistency that wasn’t too soft nor was it too firmly pressed in the pan, so it wasn’t powdery but still blended out beautifully. It started to fade noticeably on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Nude Goals
Nude Goals is a bright, light pink with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. This shade had good color coverage with a soft, lightly powdery texture that was velvety to the touch and seemed to have a bit more density than most of the brand’s matte eyeshadows (not so thin). It applied well but had a tendency to cause other shades to turn grayish when worked into them as there was slight fallout. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Although I ordered this the very day it launched (March 15th), I’m still waiting to get it. That, coupled with the fiasco of the palettes being put on sale within a few days of launch AND then being more readily available at Sephora and Ulta, has put me off purchasing directly from TF ever again.
But I’m glad the palette performed well, particularly given how lousy most TF products have been. I hope t have it shortly…
What if you cancel/return it and purchase it during Sephora’s spring sale?
the same thing with me…ordered a bunch of items the day the collection launched and my order has yet to even ship. now it is available everywhere, on websites which would have shipped my order ten times over by now. this experience is very off putting, I never thought such a famous brand would have such terrible cs problems.
i emailed them more than a week ago and still no response as to why there is such a delay.
Well…that doesn’t bode well for my order I placed this weekend and hasn’t shipped….
Same issue. I ordered the blush palette on launch day, 5 minutes after they went live. I finally got mine yesterday. I ordered the regular non matte eye shadow palette from Macy’s sale that sunday and had it by Thursday. I’m so over too faced shipped. It sounds like you all had a much worse experience. Blows my mind its already 25% off. Makes me mad really. The eye shadow palette I have is really nice. I think I”ll like the blush palette too but its a shame how they do things.
I like this a lot. The color stories make sense to me. The packaging is super cute. Unfortunately I have no shortage of neutral mattes and therefore cannot buy!
Surprisingly, I only have 3 dupes for this palette, but I do have a lot of natural eye shadow colors. But as pretty as it is and as nice as a rating it’s received, the only shade that really caught my eye is Lace Teddy. For me, this is a if I can catch it on sale.
TF will not allow an order to be cancelled once it is being processed. Besides, if I returned it, I’d have to pay return shipping. Lesson learned never to order directly from TF again.
Since this is permanent I will probably wait and pick it up at a later date. As I mentioned before I have the original iteration of this and use it a lot. Glad to see it scored reasonably well. I always use eye lid primer so that shouldn’t be a problem and I think I must be very careful picking up shadows as I rarely have any powderiness in the pan. Not sure about the new shades as they seem to pull really warm and are not particularly unique but I will try and see how it goes. These little nine pan palettes are great for traveling.
Yeah, I realize that I may sound like a prude, but I find TooFaced’s naming really juvenile and off-putting. Why is a otherwise lovely brown eyeshadow named “Sexpert”?
I agree Katy – TF has just ruined a great palette with all of the names of the shades and their innuendos – Risky Business? Sexpert? Honestly, it’s embarrassing – and you are not a prude at all Katy.
I’m over these names. I would rather they actually described the color or even use a numbering system.
There are much better ways of naming shades than this – I agree so heartily with you Shari.
If you’re a prude, shove over and make room for me too. I’d have hoped that in the face of #metoo, companies might change this tendency for names like this. Since this is their “natural” palette, why not names from nature – Bark, Cedar, Cotton? It was so nice when Hourglass launched their lipsticks with all the inspiring and positive names and I was hoping that might have signaled a trend that other companies would follow.
I’m also not a fan of the names – I know more and more young girls (middle – high school aged) are getting into makeup, but if I was a mom I would not want my daughter (or son) using shades like “sexpert”. It just doesn’t sit well with me.
Maybe its my old age talking but an eyeshadow named cleavage turns me off. I dont understand TF. One minute its unicorns and the next it’s cringey sex names. ? I do like the embossing though and im happy it got a decent grade.
They’ve always had cringe-y sex names. I love the Boudoir Eyes palette but the names – seriously? And UD is the same – all the drug culture names are not “clever”. As ShariP said, why not names that describe the colours? It’s one of the things I like about LORAC – names that actually give you a clue as to what the shade is.
Nice to see a TF eyeshadow palette perform this nicely overall! The new packaging is absolutely beautiful, too. But, do I need it? No, probably not.
It looks really nice. I think the embossing is lovely.
How refreshing is this? Great news that a Too Faced palette has scored a B+ and the shades are so workable as well. The only downside is the naming of one of the shades – seriously TF, Sexpert?
Thank you for the timely review Christine and your eye looks are just perfect.
Is it me or does this seem inspired by the NYX Lid Lingerie palette? I have it and many of the colors are similar (and also matte), and the theme is similar. I love that palette and it performs amazingly for the price, so I can’t see myself buying another “rainbow neutral” palette…
It’s a revamp of their previous Natural Matte – https://www.temptalia.com/too-faced-natural-matte-eyeshadow-palette-review-photos-swatches/
It seems like they’ve deepened some of the shades, but it’s definitely similar to the previous palette.
Ok – that means the NYX palette is itself a copy! Makes more sense, lol…
That is such a great palette! Huge pans and only $10!
I jumped the gun and ordered both Natural Eyes palettes from Sephora.
Interesting fact if you are Canadian: even with 20% off sale on the TF site, I did all the math; with customs and exchange rate it was still cheaper for me to buy at full price in Canada at Sephora, rather than from the TF site (and I KNOW how slow their shipping is–so why bother).
I just didn’t know which I wanted more, so I figured I’d get them both, and decide when they arrive.
They shall–tomorrow!
Good to know the reviews (so far) are positive.
They could uptick a bit to a slightly less two by four between the eyes, and call ‘sexpert’ Kinsey or Dr. Joyce, call ‘cleavage’ décolletage, etc. Then those who wished to interpret it in the body/sex vein could, and those who did not, would not have to. I often appreciate kvd’s more oblique references, though am PAH that she changed Nosferatu, bec no one got it, much less can pronounce it. Classic silent horror! And agree, Jess with tf being split between massively cutesy or full-on sex, it is pretty tiring. Name rant over. Zero interest, but sincerely glad tf is stepping it up, and at least trying to make a basic palette for adults. The cynic in me says ‘milksop to our old customer base…maybe we can regain their interest.’
Too faced ruins so many products with sexually explicit names of shades, why oh why do we have 2 have sex sell even our eyeshadow? Can’t give as a gift?
The old version of this palette is one of my go-to utility palettes that I reach for all the time when another palette is missing a basic to complete a look. I was looking forward to this because my old one is ratty – but I think the color changes that they’ve made to this (especially the color dead center) are a bummer. Hopefully, the old ones will start showing up at the discount stores so I can grab backups.
And, yes – enough with these stupid names. They work so hard to appeal to young people – why not work on names that are PG?
Not sure why everyone is so caught up in the names… sex is normal and a lot of the comments seem to be in keeping with patriarchal ideas that one can’t be girly and enjoy sex and their bodies. These are quite tame really too so again just strange that there is a lack of comments on the actual color combo or quality.
Yup, the only gross thing here are people’s attitudes about sex!
As always: if you don’t like it, don’t buy it and let the rest of us enjoy it! 🙂
For me, i have 2 minor daughters who enjoy makeup. I dont want them exposed to this and yes i know theres a lot worse things out there and i cant baby my children forever but as long as they’re under 18, Im going to do the best that I can to keep them from being over sexualized by this kind of stuff. These names were so unneeded. Like the others said earlier, whats wrong with cedar, cream, buff….?
Can you please compare these shades to the ones in the old palette? I would like to know what shades are the same, just renamed and which are new shades.
They did not rename existing shades – they kept the names for the three that carried over; the rest are new.
This looks SO GOOD!
It seems like a pretty decent palette, but I am super not into the shade names. It feels like Too Faced is trying to be trendy by using edgy / sexy names, but it just feels gross and pandering and not especially original. I mean, ‘Cleavage’? Come on, guys.
Pictures of looks at the beginning say “Natural eyes” instead of “natural matte” and the eyeshadows seem metallics
They captions say “Too Faced Natural Eyes / Natural Matte | Look Details” – it uses both palettes – if you click “Look Details,” it will go through exactly what was used. I’m not sure where you’re seeing any looks that just say Natural Eyes as I made sure to include both!
As I said in my response to Katy’s comment, I’m really not a fan of the sexual names. Not that there’s anything wrong with sex or that I’m trying to be sex shamey, but I don’t need sex to permeate every aspect of my life. Especially when younger people are getting into makeup – I know I would have felt uncomfortable using a shade called “sexpert” when I was 13 or 14, and I still don’t like it now. We really don’t need to constantly equate nudity with sex.
Names asides, I love the idea they were going for in this package but I wish the pans were a bit bigger or that it was a bit smaller just because there seems to be a lot of space between shades. I’d rather have it be a more compact palette so a slightly different layout (like that of their peachy mattes palette) in order to have less wasted space. Personal opinion, though. The packaging still is very nice.
Nice palette from TF! “Less Is More” and “Cleavage” (that name makes me cringe) are the two that are especially catching my eye. But I’m pretty much set with matte neutrals, so I’ll save my money.
It’s good to see that this palette performed well. I prefer this non-cutesy packaging to some of TF’s other recent releases. I wish the shade names weren’t so cringe-y.
I’m calling for the person who named the shade “Sexpert” to be permanently removed from the creative team. What a dumb word.
I love these matte palettes, but this is way too warm for me. Not a cool tone in sight. 🙁
