Tom Ford Solar Gold Lip Shimmer
Tom Ford Lip Shimmer ($49.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a new formula released in two, limited edition shades for summer. These are supposed to give a “glimmering effect” or “veiled over [lipstick] to add radiant shimmer,” and the formula is supposed to be hydrating as well. If you’re not into sheer, shimmery color, you’ll want to just skip this post entirely; both shades are on the sheer side–mostly shimmer without a lot of color. I did not find the formula moisturizing; I actually felt like it was somewhat drying, and the high frost/shimmer content was a little uncomfortable to wear. Initially, it feels very slick and emollient–like a glaze–but it dries down and all that glossy goodness disappears and all that is left is shimmer, which has a noticeable texture once the shine is gone. I also tried the gold shade as a highlighter, but it’s somewhat tacky on the skin and doesn’t sit as well on the skin as a true liquid or cream highlighter does.
Tom Ford Solar Gold Lip Shimmer ($49.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a light-medium, yellow gold shimmer. It has a subtle base color that does seem to add warmth to my natural lip color, but the primary effect is shimmer. It lasted for two hours on me. MAC Playland (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. Dolce and Gabbana Topazio (LE, $32.00) is slightly darker. MAC You’ve Got It (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Ruffian Gold (LE, $16.00) is very similar. Guerlain Altoum (LE, $35.00) has larger sparkle. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Tom Ford Moonlight Lip Shimmer ($49.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a frosted, silvery-white with a high frost finish. This one was more pigmented–it had semi-sheer color coverage–but this felt so drying when worn for longer than an hour, though it managed two and a half hours. MAC Eloquent Air (LE, $16.00) is very similar. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Iced (P, $18.00) is more pigmented, more metallic. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Yeahhh, I don’t like the look of either of them.
Good thing for your wallet 😉
Thats really dissapointing! You’d think for the price they would look and feel a lot better ):
They feel great for about a half hour, then not so much!
wow, can’t imagine paying $50 for these… even great brands have flops!
They do!
For $49 you should be able to get a really good lipstick..these are really disappointing.
You definitely can!
Ah Bummer ! How i wish they brought the cream shadows as part of a collection!
Me too!
Are the names mixed up in the Glossover and the pics? Disappointing to get such poor quality from TF – especially at those prices!!
My tubes are mislabeled apparently (they’re press samples), but everywhere online has them with Moonlight/silver-white and Solar Gold/gold, so I’ve edited the post to reflect that.
I think you may have switched the names of the two colors around in your post. “Moonlight” is the silver/white color and “Solar Gold” is the yellow gold color on the Tom Ford website.

No thanks! Not that I can’t appreciate a good luxury brand ( I love my Rouge Gs and Meteorites!), but for this price it should be something both high quality and special. The fact that Tom Ford’s brand has never really appealed to me certainly helps my wallet!
Also, does anyone else feel like the two shade names should have been switched?

Hi! I think the names are mixed up. The silver shoul be moonlight and the gold is solar? 🙂

Solar Gold looks pretty on you, and I can think of several looks I’ve been meaning to do where Moonlight would come in handy for the finish… But, er, not at that price point, and not if they’re drying!
I’d rather put on a lip balm and dust over some eyeshadow 😉
I couldn’t believe they were drying!
i have both of them and like them… i also used them on the apples of my cheeks for a lil’ shimmer. but i agree when i wear as lipstick, i am re-applying, but with a primer it streches it out a lil’ longer. but i love the packaging, i think its very pretty!
I wish they worked better as a highlighter – felt too slick for me!
I purchased both of these from Sak’s and returned them. The gold one is better then the white one. Yet if you already have the YSL lip gloss in gold that came out awhile ago, you do not need this. The YSL is far better. The white one is like the paste you had in grade school. It can only be used on your lips, If you use it on your face, it feels like grease. It does not highlight of soften your lip color, it makes your lips color look like paste. Save your money and pass on these.
I’m glad you were able to return the two you bought, Elizabeth!
Ooh! 🙂 The second one reminds me of Givenchy Rouge Interdit satin finish in Angel Whisper! I like this TF on you!
Thank you!
Finally, some TF products I don’t want!
Haha!
I feel this TF release really blows.. The palette was a disappointing collection of things he has already done and these lipsticks.. I’m at a loss for words.
It’s underwhelming compared to last year’s, that’s for sure.
They remind me of the really cheap glitter glosses that were around when I was a teen. But those only cost 99 cents!
LOL!
Speaking from personal experience (although an experience long past), Lip Smackers can be used to achieve the same effect.
lol, thanks for the dupe rec 😉
Okay, I hate to admit it (and be mean at the same time) but I must admit I get a certain thrill when super expensive items get your bad reviews. I can’t do the $50 price point for lipstick….that idea just makes me cringe (so instead I buy many at $35….go figure the logic). These look truly not worth getting and so I’m thrilled to know that I don’t want something that’s way out of my price point comfort zone!
You made my day!
Happy to help 🙂
I bought Solar Gold for my upcoming trip to Maui. I have only tried it one once and I like the very soft, sheer effect as I don’t want to be too “gold-y”, like a stripper in Las Vegas or something. So far, I’m happy with it but have only worn it once. We’ll see, it should look nice on the beach.
Hope it works out for you, Mimi!
ouch – $49 US for that? I think I have Lipsmackers that will give me the same effect LOL
You are the second reader to say that!
As lipsticks, these are just not my thing. Wayne Goss used these as highlighters in his videos and said they worked incredibly, especially the silver one. What do think, Christine? Could you use them that way?
Hi Michelle,
In the post above, I mentioned that I tried the gold shade as a highlighter, but it didn’t work well for me that way.
I do love the shape of the lipstick itself but wow. I wouldn’t pay $5 much less $50 for that. Granted, I don’t like sheer or shimmery lipsticks like this.
At least your wallet is safe 😀
That’s too bad, the theme and concept are really neat and cute! At least they have nice dupes. 😀
Thankfully!
Ha!
I knew you wouldn’t be impressed!
Gold one still looks better than silver but I am not into any of them .. wish they had worked better as illuminator.. but now they are absolutely skippable! 🙂
I think this might have been better sold as an illuminator (and to have made it that way, so the formula would be better for that purpose).
It seems like a lot of brands are releasing gold lipsticks. I have one that I received from Ipsy a few months back – maybe it’s time I play around with it.
It does seem that way!
