Tom Ford Black Orchid Nightbloom Powder
Tom Ford Black Bloom Nightbloom Powder ($80.00 for 0.28 oz.) is a light-medium gold with strong, yellow undertones and a sparkling, golden shimmer finish. Smashbox Glow (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Sun Ceremony (LE, $2.99) is lighter (90% similar). Chanel Routes des Indes de Chanel Illuminating Powder (LE, $80.00) is darker (90% similar). Anastasia Sunburst (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Anastasia Butterscotch (LE, ) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Giorgio Armani No. 02 (P, $62.00) is warmer (85% similar). Becca Prosecco Pop (P, $38.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Bobbi Brown Party (LE, $46.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Tarte Gator Wings (LE, ) is lighter (85% similar). bareMinerals The Shining Moment (LE, $26.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
The Nightbloom Powder is supposed to have a “luxurious” feel and “sumptuous color.” In reality, it is a powder highlighter with a noticeable about of shimmer and shine, so it is more suitable for someone who likes their highlighter stronger. The texture was dense, a little dry to the touch, but blendable on the skin and did not emphasize my pores or the natural texture of my skin. I noticed some of the shimmer separated from the base powder, so it did not look as even on the skin as desired. On my light-medium skin tone, I get visible yellow gold color, but it is possible to diffuse and sheer it out so there is fainter color as well. The pigmentation was buildable, starting around medium coverage and building up from there. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

I have to chuckle a bit….WnW’s “dupe” rates higher, is 90% similar and costs 3 bucks! I know which one I”d get!
For the TF brand, it really lacks the texture I’d expect for luxury!
Ok, SO glad I didn’t pay $80 for this–it looks like the base and glitter aren’t evenly blended, and the base looks too sheer and dry to me, and at this price point, it has to be perfect. Yikes, I just noticed that all of the dupes scored higher, including WNW. I have the WNW one, and unfortunately, it’s invisible on me because the soft yellow blends right into my yellow undertones. Soooo, I need something that has very strong yellow gold shimmer. I was staring at swatches of Night Bloom for weeks and weeks, trying to figure out where I had seen a similar color. Then it dawned on me – MAC Good Luck Trolls Sun’s Out Bum’s Out ! On the screen, they look like they are in the same color family, I’ll get a chance to swatch both in person this Friday and find out how close they really are. But now I have one MAC Sun’s Out to use as a shadow, and another one to use as a highlighter, it can be applied heavy or blended out into softer gold, saved myself $ 63, enough to get a new Dior quint for fall!
Let me know how the eyeshadow works out 🙂
I’ve already used it a couple of times on my face, and I’m quite pleased, got a nice strong yellow gold shimmer! Since it’s a shadow, I have to use a dense buffing brush to pick up color, but I just buff onto my nose and cheekbones. It can be built up or sheered out. It’s not as easy to work with as a regular highlighter, but for $ 63 less, I’m ok with that. I have a feeling most people are going to find Suns Out Bums Out to be way too yellow on their face (esp. if they have pink undertones), but I found out that my face can absorb a lot of yellow b/c of the yellow undertones, so I need a very strong yellow highlighter, otherwise the yellow gold won’t show up
It looks like a distant cousin of NARS Albatross! 🙂
Kind of, but this is a lot darker without the white base 🙂
I have to say I don’t like this one at all.
Totally understand!
Dont like the color at all 🙁 I love golden highligters,my favourite its “Sun in the city” from Guerlain but this it have something too yellow that i dislike and for me its not beautiful on skin!
Gotcha!
Funny, the only thing I liked about this whole collection was the packaging! Shame it tested so poorly, for the price point point it should be always an A, and I’m a huge Ford fan. I have a feeling the pale violet one is going to be disappointing too.
Totally agree – should be better at this price. I reviewed Velvet Bloom already 🙂
I need new glasses or a new brain! Goes back to check….
Be careful with the Tom Ford Velvet Bloom (the pale pink one). I saw 2 You Tubers that said they couldn’t get any color out of it, not even after taking off the surface, digging into it, and rubbing it with their fingers or the densest applicator they could find. One bought it off the Tom Ford website, and they refused to take it back, $80 wasted 🙁 It appears there are QC issues, with some batches better than others.
Must be – I haven’t had a problem with my Velvet Bloom. I feel the same way about Black Bloom as Christine. Way to yellow and too in your face for my pale/fair tone. It works well as an inner corner highlight – just an inordinately expensive one. That’s the chance we take sometimes though and my hits are usually considerably more common than my misses.
Glad to hear Velvet Bloom is working out for you. Yes, I can totally see Black Bloom as being way too yellow for many people. Yikes, this might last you 2 lifetimes if you use only as inner corner highlight. IDK, maybe you can mix with another highlighter or apply on your shoulders or décolletage. I have some Tom Ford products ( 3 cream shadows and 3 lippies) and have been really happy with everything so far, which is great because a miss at this price point is painful.
Haha! At least two lifetimes. I’ll have to try to mix it in with a more white based highlight to see if I can get more use out of it. I had a sneaking suspicion when I ordered it that it would be too strong a color for me, but I did anyway, so I can only blame myself. Fortunately it’s not the end of the world. Thanks for the suggestion!
GASPS!!! That is THE most beautiful highlight I have EVER seen!!! I use a similar/not quite as yellow highlight, but it still has the golden sheem/shimmer and I adore how it looks on my warm skin. I will be checking out dupes for this as I only have half of my yellow sheeny highlight left!!!
Hope you can find a dupe!
Shannon, I’m curious what dupes you have for the TF Black Bloom gold highlighter. I love yellow gold highlighters, but don’t want to shell out $80!
Ehhhhhhh……I know it’s a “to each her own” and “you do you, girl” makeup world, but that color is really unflattering – probably for anyone. LOL I love TF packaging, though!
Well, I thought it was flattering on me, so I guess I would disagree on that 🙂
Sorry, Christine! This just looks a little too jaundiced for my liking. There aren’t many things you put on that don’t look good on you, so I know if I don’t like it on you I definitely won’t like it on me. LOL
Christine I thought it looked lovely on you!
Not sure what to say, maybe I should just be quiet 🙂
It sure is gold-y. It looks good on you, for me it would be too warm.
Yes, it’s definitely a warm, yellowy highlight, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea!
It’s very pretty but I have three of the dupes already and $80?! I know it’s a luxury product but nope, can’t do it. I’d rather buy 10 Colourpop highlighters for that $$$…
Glad you have three dupes already! 😉
For the $$$’s, this one just does NOT deliver. Sad, because this shade, if better formulated, would have been nice. Oh well, here’s hoping ABH decides to make Butterscotch and some of this summers other shades permanent, owing to their popularity.
I agree, Nancy! It’s not what I’d expect for the price point.
Wow – it really is yellowy – I can even see it in the photos. Hmmm – not sure that would suit a lot of complexions.
Yes, it is a strongly yellow gold!
While I like the color itself (and can appreciate the yellow undertones especially), the texture is a bit disappointing to me, at least at that price.
Sure looks nice on you.
Hey! I got the same lipstick! It looks great on you, btw.
Thanks for all the great posts.
This highlighter would have been perfect if the quality was a little better. I wouldn’t pay $80 for this. The result is beautiful but the swatch looks a little iffy. There’s definitely cheaper highlighters that are better quality. I passed on that WnW one when I saw it months ago but now I’m considering grabbing it. I hope I can find it!
Too yellow for me! Money Saved!
Looks good on you, a bit too yellow but I can see it’s benefit on lighter skin, for me with my dark skin it’s a no and then the price, Tom is trippin lol. $80 for .28 ounces I just can’t with the luxury but those dupes will surely do lol.
It looks gritty. I have the Wet N Wild dupe, I’ll stick with that. lol
