The Scarlet Season: MAC Dubonnet Lipstick

MAC Dubonnet Lipstick ($14.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a rich, deep shade of red with more of a brownish tone. It’s not really a blue-based red, nor an orange-based red–it’s truly one of those shades that works well on many skin tones. (Kind of like MAC’s Viva Glam I Lipstick!) It has a redder, richer look than VGI, plus it has the glossy sheen (though no shimmer). It applies opaque in just one layer, and it clings to lips without being drying. It holds up and wears for a good four or five hours and afterward, it does leave a slight stain behind. Definitely one of MAC’s must-haves!

What about you? Would you wear this red?

The Scarlet Season is a series of posts showcasing and featuring my favorite shades of red lips–from glosses to lipsticks that runs through December 2009. You can sure expect to see a lot of red this holiday season!

I love Dubonnet! I have very fair skin with freckles, red hair, and a very pink/red skin undertones. I searched FOREVER for a red lipstick that I could wear. I love the hollywood glam/pinup look, but most red lipsticks either looked too orange and clashed with my hair, or were way to bright and made me look washed out. Dubonnet is perfect for me, and I have gotten tons of compliments every time I have worn it.

Christine, I’ve gotta say, The Scarlet Season has got to be one of my all-time favourite series on Temptalia. Will there be a pink or a plum or (please, Jesus) coral(!) season?

Dubonnet will also be mine.

I love this lipstick. A MAC artist recommended Russian Red for me (which I thought was a bit too bright) but I opted for this one. Not a bad choice for a first time bright color/red lipstick user! I have nothing but praise for it. ♥ And yeah, I think it will look amazing on a lot of skin tones, especially tanner shades like me (NC35/40) Love love love. 🙂

hey christina, this is my 1st visit to the website actually but im quite intrigued with the photos n swatches..i love red lipstick n it suits me perfectly, but i wanted to ask which do u think best suits me, i am of fair complexion (like catherine zeta jones), black hair (sometimes i dye it chocolate brown), very dark brown/black eyes:↲
Chanel Dragon lipstick, Guerlain Sultan, MAC Dubonnet? Or Julie Hewett Rouge Noir?↲Also i want to know which of them is of the highest quality coz my lips r very senstive :(↲My last question is: r all of the previous products for Sale now?? Or again 4m previous collection & no longer there?!↲Thanx alot 🙂

I think you could go with any of them, and they are all quality products. Dragon, Sultan (at least, last I checked), Dubonnet, and Rouge Noir are all available for sale. Dragon is the brightest, Dubonnet tends to be the most flattering on everyone.

Sorry about commenting on this post a year later, but is this similar to MAC Chili lipstick? I’m NC30 and looking for a red that doesn’t have any blue tones to it and having trouble finding a shade that suits me.

I have tried alot of different shades of red in the past and they were never what I was looking for. They are either too orangy or pink, etc.
I am looking forward to trying Dubonnet. Does anyone out there know what the undertone colors will be? I have fair skin with a yellow undertone, so I have to be careful colors what I wear. Thanks, Theresa Las Vegas, NV

Hi Chrisitne,

I got this yesterday and when I got it it was fine but I left it in my bathroom counter after trying it out in the night. With the AC switched on in the adjoining bedroom and due to humidity, the lipstick seems to have developed tiny oily beads. Is it ok to keep it? Tell me pls as it will save me lot of time and the hassle of exchange since I have already applied it twice and the mac staff here are not so helpful.

Thanks Christine. Does this in any way affect the longevity of the lipstick and could it be used for the same duration as I would other lipsticks or am I under a compulsion to finish the tube early after this occurrence?
