Tarte Energy Noir Eye & Cheek Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Tarte Energy Noir Eye & Cheek Palette
Tarte Energy Noir Eye & Cheek Palette ($38.00 for 0.54 oz.) is a cooler-toned eyeshadow palette with one blush. The palette has some misses and a few nicer shades, but if you already have a few of Tarte’s palettes, you may want to check your stash–there were a lot of Tarte eyeshadows that I ended up pulling as similar shades across this palette. The mattes were on the powdery side, while the more frosted shades were more pigmented and applied better to bare skin.
As a note, the back of the packaging lists 1.91 oz. for the blush with a 5.4g weight, but when you covert 5.4 grams into oz., you get 0.19 oz. (1.91 oz. is a massive amount of product in makeup, whereas 0.19 oz. is more in line with the size of it in the palette and what you’d expect to see with the average blush).
Full Moon is a light beige with subtle, neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had a very silky feel to it, but it was prone to sheering out as it also became somewhat powdery. It had semi-opaque coverage and lasted for seven and a half hours on me. MAC Blanc Type (P, $16.00) is warmer. Bobbi Brown Bone (P, $22.00) is warmer. MAC Vanilla (P, $16.00) is warmer. Charged Up is a subdued, medium-dark taupe brown with a frosted finish and warm undertones. The eyeshadow had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t powdery or dry. On me, it started to fade after eight hours of wear. MAC Superwatt (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery. Clarins The Essentials #5 (LE, ) is warmer. Urban Decay Juju (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Dark Drive is a blackened brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It was semi-sheer with a drier texture that kicked up excess in the pan and ended up being difficult to blend on the eye, as the eyeshadow applied unevenly. It started to fade after seven hours of wear. Too Faced Triple Fudge (P, $16.00) is warmer. Tarte Dream in Chocolate (LE, ) is darker. Kat Von D Shadow Box (P, ) is lighter. Stone Unturned is a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It was very powdery, which resulted in sheer coverage that didn’t apply well to bare skin. It was noticeably faded after five and a half hours on me. Dior Mirage (761) (P, $30.00) is lighter. MAC Fashion Fix (P, $21.00) is darker. Up Too Slate is a medium-dark, purple-taupe with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that was easy to work with. The texture felt a little denser compared to the rest of the palette. The eyeshadow started to fade after seven and a half hours of wear. MAC Hypnotizing (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. Inglot #420 (P, $6.00) is cooler. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #1 (P, ) is more shimmery. MAC Dangerous Cuvee (P, $18.50) is cooler. Ardency Inn Disco (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker. Misty Mauve is a softened, medium-dark purple-taupe with a matte finish and cooler undertones. It was a smidgen on the powdery side, but it was denser and had a much smoother feel, which helped the color payoff. The color went on with mostly opaque coverage and started to fade after seven and a half hours of wear. Tarte I Think I Cannes (LE, ) is darker. Tarte Natural Beauty (LE, ) is lighter, warmer. Makeup Geek Unexpected (P, $5.99) is lighter. Tarte Best Friend (LE, ) is darker. ColourPop Bill (P, $5.00) is lighter. Buxom Spoiled Sexy (P, $12.00) is lighter, warmer. Power Plum is a deepened, eggplant purple with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It was powdery and dusty in the pan, which made it harder to blend on the lid without it turning into a patchy/uneven mess. The color wore well for seven hours on me. Make Up For Ever #160 (P, $20.00) is lighter, brighter. bareMinerals Nightcap (P, ) is lighter, brighter. Tarte My Own Cotes de Rhone (LE, ) is . See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Crystal Spark is a brightened, light peachy-beige with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had a denser texture, but it was prone to “thickening” on the lid, so it would look uneven or emphasize the texture of the lid itself. It had good pigmentation and was fairly blendable, while the color lasted for seven and a half hours. Tarina Tarantino Delightful #4 (P, ) is less shimmery, darker. MAC Rich Glance (LE, $21.00) is darker. Tarina Tarantino Delightful #4 (P, ) is less shimmery, darker. Unearthed is a rosy copper with a matte finish. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque coverage that was fairly buildable with a lightly powdery texture that was at least finely-milled. It lasted for eight hours on me before fading, but it fell short of the 12-hour wear time claimed. MAC Corol #2 (LE, $21.00) is cooler. Chanel Jersey (80) (P, $45.00) is warmer. Hmmm I’m torn on this. I really like the vibe of this palette (and I don’t own any Tarte palettes yet), but hard to blend mattes are no fun…
No, they definitely are not! 🙁
Did you try them on top of primer by any chance? If they perform better with primer I could make this palette work for me.
No, sorry, I didn’t!
I really don’t get what’s so great about Tarte. I can’t think of one item I’ve ever owned by them that I really loved.
I have only liked a few things a LOT from the brand 🙁
There was a time tarte was talc-free, and that’s what drew me to the brand. However, since they’ve started, I find myself completely disinterested. The same goes for LORAC…
Ya know, these are exactly the kind of shades that I can never decide on whether they look good on me or not, weird huh? Either way, it’s a shame the mattes are a bit powdery.
I wish they were better! 🙁
Another mediocre Tarte Palette. I wish the blush were sold separately. I like it.
The blush is a pretty color!
There’s too many misses, dupe-able shades, and repeated shades in this palette. Money saved for the Fall releases
Agreed, Katherine!
Tis the summer of discontent…well, palette wise, anyway. I almost bought this past Friday because it really looked gorgeous, but stopped myself with “Wait for Christine to review it first before you jump!”…so glad I didn’t buy it! You just saved me some $$$’s and disappointment!
Glad I could help, Nancy!
I’m slightly let down! I was considering this one. It’s going on the back burner!
Awww!
Oof – the eyeshadows are a mess! Too bad, seems like a good amount of their releases have been average to poor recently 🙁
I know 🙁 So sad!
Oh man what a bummer! I really liked the looks of this one… Maybe it’ll go on sale eventually @ Sephora & I can grab it for $20-ish.. You did a lovely eye look as usual, Christine 🙂
Here’s hoping it goes on sale 😉
Ya nvr know 😉
Ulta has a round “version” of this for the same price, & they’re doing that 20% off entire purchase, which is always nice. I’m not sure how similar they are though
Pretty blush and GORGEOUS eye look, Christine! You made those shadows WORK!
Thank you!! 🙂
The only colour I really liked was Up to Slate – the rest were either mediocre or very dupable. A tad disappointing for Tarte fans.
Agreed — it was disappointing!
A part of me kind of wants to buy this, but only because this is a neutral palette without a bronzy shade, nLOL! However, I’ll still most likely skip it.
Maybe it’ll go on sale!
This looks like it had the potential to be a really awesome palette but missed the mark on a lot of counts. The blush is also not a great colour for me but it might have been workable had the rest of the palette been better.
I wish Tarte would be more consistent!
I’ve never tried any of the Tarte eyeshadow palettes. I like their blushes but their eyeshadow palettes don’t appeal to me. I’m looking forward for their Christmas release though, I saw that they’re releasing another blush palette which I’ll probably get 🙂
They usually release a blush palette during the holidays!
It’s too bad about the performance because the shades in this palette are really nice. I would have seriously considered it had performed better because I don’t have any mattes in a few of those colors. Or… maybe, between the Be MATTEnificent palette and the Tartelette pallete, I do? I’m too tired to remember. =(
lol! I can’t quite remember either, but there may be a few darker shades between those two.
I own the palette and actually quite like it, but I’m using primer and only applying the darkest shades damp with an eyeliner brush. I’ve got green eyes and usually go for plummy or pinky-brown eye looks, so this covers all the bases for me. (Most of the Sephora reviews seem to be from green- or hazel-eyed girls, haha.)
Happy to hear it, Katinka! Good call on using the darker shades as eyeliner!
Count me in the torn camp. I LOVE the color combinations — I’d wear the eye/cheek color scheme happily, frequently, and I do wear shadow over primer…
But there are so many other options to choose from these days, y’know?
Still, price isn’t bad…
Exactly how I feel Tessa — there are a lot of options so it’s hard to go for something that isn’t quite right these days!
Hello there I love coming to your blog to read your reviews on the most recent products that have been released! Thank you for creating such in-depth reviews for each product. I am torn between this palette and the Rainforest After Dark palette. I am olive-toned with dark features, so which palette do you think will show up better on my skin and I will get more use out of? I collect palettes and am an avid lover of Tarte, and both packagings are beautiful!
Do you tend to go with lighter looks or darker ones?
Do you prefer the Tarte Energy Noir or Rainforest after dark better? I’m debating between the two, or do you think they’re different enough to get both? Thanks!
Probably Rainforest After Dark. I think if you use one a lot already, you could justify both.
I am completely SHOCKED by this review! I know, to each their own, right? 😉
I have had this palette for a few weeks, and it is a DEFINITE go-to for me. The two darkest “shadows” are best used as powder liner. I ♡ them used like that! Also, the highlighter shade could be used as a shadow, but it works best on my as a cheekbone highlight. The blusher is the PERFECT “natural flush” color for me; it looks exactly like my cheeks after a brisk Fall morning walk!
I give this pallet an Easy “A”, if not “A+++” !
I do not have any difficulty blending the beautiful mattes, on the contrary I find them very easy to work with.
Just my two cents. 🙂
Ty for your review, it is so interesting to see others’ perspective on makeup. ♡
Take care!
