Surratt A La Mode Automatique Lip Crayon

Surratt Automatique Lip Crayon ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) is supposed to be a “high-pigment lip crayon with a lightweight, non-drying matte finish.” It is also described as “moisturizing” and “nourishing.” It might as well be a jumbo-sized lip liner, and despite it looking thicker, it actually contains as much as your typical, lip pencil (0.04 oz.). You don’t need to sharpen this one, as it simply twists up. It’s so dry, painful to use as it pulls and drags at the lips, and feels uncomfortable to wear for however long it wears. The major upsides are that wear time runs long and doesn’t feather or bleed, but if you’re someone who cannot do clingy, dry, and drying lip products, I don’t know that will be much comfort to you. There was no scent or taste to the formula. I found these uncomfortable, bordering on painful, to wear, and I don’t consider myself to have dry lips, yet these made my lips look worse and feel worse. Just as a heads up, the amount contained in this seems a little below average than most jumbo lip pencils.

Surratt A La Mode Automatique Lip Crayon ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “bright coral.” It’s a brightened, coral-pink with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff with a drier, stiff consistency that tugs on the lips a lot, so it can be hard to get really smooth color without having to go over the same area a few times. It lasted for six hours and faded from the center of the mouth first. Anastasia Sweet Talker (P, $20.00) is more matte. Kat Von D Berlin (P, $19.00) is a smidgen darker. MAC Dynamo (P, $19.50) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Surratt Celestine Automatique Lip Crayon ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “deep rose.” It’s a medium-dark, rosy brown with warm undertones and an ultra-matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a very dry, stiff texture that made it difficult to apply, as it dragged and pulled at the lips a lot. It lasted for five hours on me, and it was drying over time, as well as in generally being uncomfortable to wear due to how clingy it was. Flower Beauty Petal Kiss (P, $6.98) is pinker. NARS Sex Machine (P, $25.00) is sheerer, lighter. MAC Half-Red (P) is darker. Burberry Peony Rose (302) (P, $30.00) is very similar. Make Up For Ever #4 (P, $19.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Surratt Shocking Automatique Lip Crayon ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as an “audacious pink.” It’s a medium-dark, warm pink-red with an ultra-matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that went on somewhat evenly, but the formula is dry and stiff that it does drag, so it can be a challenge to get the color to deposit on the lips well. It wore for six and a half hours, and it was painfully drying–not just dry-feeling–over time. MAC Victoriana (LE, $16.00) is warmer. MAC La Vie En Rouge (LE, $16.00) is warmer. MAC Damn Glamorous (LE, $16.00) is darker. Kat Von D Bachelorette (P, $21.00) is very similar. MAC Relentlessly Red (P, $16.00) is slightly brighter. MAC Glam (DC, $16.00) is redder. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Thank you for swatching and reviewing these. I am going to pass, they look pretty, but I just can’t deal with dry lip products. I prefer a creamy formula, and if you say they are painfully dry, I trust your judgement and will just pass on these.

For the price point, they should be amazing! This is just sad. I don’t usually buy higher end lip pencils besides the Nars Matte Velvet ones, but these actually caught my eye. These would just kill my lips, thanks for saving me $$ Christine!

I actually like the way they look–like a stain. However any lip pencil will have the same effect and I’m not going near anything that’s as uncomfortable as a dry lip pencil.

I have to say, though, these don’t look any worse when applied than just about every other matte lipstick. The appearance from the pictures looks pretty par for the course with mattes. I can tell from the swatches that they’re pretty dry and stiff, but on the lips they look like the vast majority of mattes that I’ve seen. Of course, I’m not a “matte person,” either. I tend to think almost all of them are not the best look on just about everyone except people with very full, smooth lips.

They look like some really poor-performing matte lipsticks to me, but in general, I think these are worse than the average matte, and they certainly feel a lot worse! For instance, I think you can get REALLY smooth (almost unnaturally smooth given there’s no real shine) with a lot of liquid lipsticks but some totally cling and look that way!

Oh, I’m sure they are. I’ve learned the hard way that as much as I like the shades of a lot of mattes, my lips simply will not tolerate them. I have dry lips on a good day, so even satin lippies tend to look overly dry on me. A true matte lipstick just looks like I’ve been wandering around the desert with no water, lol. I require a moisturizing lipstick with quite a bit of shine or gloss, or it just doesn’t work. That’s why I usually go for glosses, since they’re usually more comfortable to wear. I adore Tarina Tarantino’s gem glosses and Cargo’s long-wear gloss line.

Oh, that’s too bad as the colors are pretty. But I can see what you mean by drying out your lips (the pics say it all -ouch!). For $34, you might as well go with Guerlain or NARS as their formulas are so much better
