MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours (Spring 2017)

There are several new shades of MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($21.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) that released recently, some are limited edition and some are permanent. One shade (High Drama) was out of stock, so I do not have that one at this time.

I feel like MAC just sort of missed the boat, again. These shades look okay but there are endless shoes for them and beauty trends this year are moving away from the super matte finishes

this
while i love additional dupes for more expensive brands, sephora and colorpop seem to have covered those bases already.

though while i agree many cutting edge and trend-focused brands are moving away from mattes, many others are still in the thick of it. i think as long as the kylie lip kits remain strong sellers, matte 90’s lip shades will be steady releases

Oh for suuure. The world of instagram makeup and the world of editorial/high fashion makeup are totally different and I don’t expect to see ultra matte lips disappear from IG any time soon. It’s just strange to me that MAC seems to have given up on putting out anything innovative/unique. Or even just putting out products like this at the peak of its popularity.

You’d think they’d be taking notes by now?

Zoe Avatar

It’s definitely not innovative, you are right.
I think many product decisions these days are based on social media success, and “influencers”. they have become the new measures for trends and as a result, brands are takings risks less and less.
I wonder if there have been any leadership changes at MAC these last few years, or change in brand strategy that could be influencing this as well?

Apparently they reformulated and are now less drying than when they first came out. I’m wearing burnt spice now and I used sephoras lip primer under it which is hydrating. It almost feels like it never completely dried matte and some transferred on the straw on my drink. I can deal with this more than it flaking off in patches

Love! Love all these colors on you! The formula applies smooth and feels good for a liquid lippie! Way more excited about these colors than the original release! Thanks for posting! ?

My next obsession! These are gorgeous! Looking at the ads, I didn’t think I was going to like hardly any of them, but I was wrong about that now that I’ve seen this.

While this isn’t my type of formula, I appreciate the shades and wow do some of them look especially good!
I’m really liking Espresso and Uniformly Fabulous. Mixed feelings about Young Attitude, but I’ll wait for your review.

omg, right? I’ll get lost in my own lippie collection sometimes, (or will just get all indecisive!) and my lips cry after swatching just two or three colors– and those aren’t liquid mattes! I can’t handle the super matte finish, they *do* look like they hurt!!

Oh, dear – I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who looks good in those awful deathly browns (sorry, Christine, but they do look kind of …. deathly). The swatches look terrible, too, right across the board. PASS!!

These aren’t for me as I’m not a big fan of mattes; they are easily the least represented in my stash. A matte has to be unique in some way or relatively not drying for me to even consider buying it. I do find it interesting though how many of the shades where the swatches looked a bit sketchy look decidedly better on you.

I can’t handle this formula. I purchased all of the first release and they all went back. I can work with ABH, KVD, Ofra but this formula is horrible on my lips and my daughter who is in her 20’s feels the same. They crack and flake off like crazy and wear off with a broken, cracked appearance around the outside of the lip. Just doesn’t work for me and I agree I think traditional lipsticks are making a come back with many of the matte formulas being tweaked to lost longer from a traditional bullet.

YES! Finally! these are gorgeous and so ME. The only reason I never bought one of these Mac liquid lipsticks before is cuz none of the colours interested me! I am loving all the cool tones and those dark colours are beautiful! It’s true they aren’t the first to do these colours or anything but I’m a Mac whore. I’m eager to try one.

Everything looks good on you. Tried Dash O’ Spice last werk. Really looked bad on my light with yellow undertones face and I took it off immediately. I have so many matte lip colors now that I just didn’t bother to try any other colors.

Between this and bite, do I sense a yellowed trend? In general, they lipswatch nicely, but the arm swatches are deceptively bad. Suppose that’s a good thing, but many folks don’t really want to lipswatch instore, and use their hands. They might forego shades that actually could work for them. The blue is stunning.

I wandered into the MAC store on the day these released and tried them on. I already have Oh Lady, and wasn’t impressed with the formula. MAC must have paid attention to the negative reviews because the formula is MUCH better! I bought Topped with Brandy and Uniformly Fabulous and I love them! I actually wore Uniformly Fabulous for NYE and loved how it wore. I’m thinking of going back for Carnivorous 🙂

I kind of have enough matte products, so these are a pass for me — as it is, I tend to prefer creamier products anyway. The red and blue shades look quite nice to my eye, but I have so many shades of the former and I’m not very likely to wear the latter, even if it does look like it wears well!

JR Avatar

I am clearly in the minority but LOVE the retro matte formula! I also was over the moon with the new colors! I was back and forth between Fleshstone, which I ultimately chose, and Simply Smoked, which was too dark on me. I use prep and prime under and over, which saves my naturally dry lips. Sometimes I’ll add a sparkly lipstick in the center or a touch of lipglass.

Babet Fontein Avatar

topped with brandy is not even close!! i bought it online because of this blog. but in real life its ugly as hel and not even close to the shade your showing 🙁

Christine Avatar

I’m not sure what that means or how it is different to you vs. the photos, but I try to use consistent lighting across all my photos and have made them as accurate as I can based on how they look on me. Products can look different from screen to screen due to ambient light, how your screen interprets color (e.g. color settings), the brightness of your screen, and products can appear warmer/darker or lighter/darker depending on your skin tone and undertones.
