Snap Queen

Smashbox Snap Queen Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) consists of a pale pink, rosy mauve, and deep plum. The color combination should work beautifully, but the quality was lacking in two of the three shades with one being decent but none were impressive.

Get Candid

Get Candid is a light, very warm-toned pink with a frosted shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation paired with a dusty, thinner consistency that kicked up a lot of excess product in the pan and did not apply that well to bare lids (and only somewhat better over Smashbox’s eyeshadow primer). It lasted for six hours before fading.

Formula Overview

-

The formula is supposed to be "super-blendable" and "richly-pigmented." I found the quality to vary a lot from shade to shade, even with a trio, as some shades had soft, blendable texture and others were drier, dusty, and messy to work with and had pigmentation that sheered out or faded quickly. I wanted to like them more than I ended up after using them on the lid as I routinely felt like the brighter shades never looked quite as vibrant in practice as they did in the pan. Most of the shades were blendable and had coverage from medium to opaque with a few being sheer. They lasted anywhere from five to eight hours on me.

Hit Reply

Hit Reply is a medium, rosy mauve with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer coverage, which was buildable to medium coverage on bare skin and semi-opaque coverage over primer. The texture was incredibly powdery, and it was a real mess to use, even during application and after tapping off the excess on my brush. The color started to fade noticeably within five hours of wear.

Save to Faves

Save to Faves is a deep plum with warm undertones and a sprinkling of pearl over a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that was fairly blendable and easy to work with. The texture was slightly dusty in the pan, but it wasn’t messy in the pan and applied with good intensity (without primer). On me, it lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

I know people love them, but I’ve never been able to Smashbox shadows to work for me, no matter what I use as a base. I was really hoping they changed the formula with these, but they look like the packaging is the only thing different. Too bad, as I could really see this trio being one of those products I keep in my makeup bag at all times…

Pretty much an epic fail here – which is a shame because the last little trio was quite good. How do brands do this? One trio is great and the other one is poor – absolutely no consistency here for their customers.
The aubergine shade is pretty, but certainly not unique enough to purchase the trio.
