Silver & Gray Eyeliner Comparisons & Dupes

It looks like metallic silver has been done by quite a few brands, doesn’t it? When it comes to grays, though, I don’t have nearly enough to give a particularly great comparison, but of the three darker grays I own, there are more differences between the three than with the five silver shades.

  • Milani Silver Liquif’Eye Liner is a metallic silver. It is nearly identical to Urban Decay’s Dime. (Review)
  • L’Oreal HIP Silver Lightning Chrome Eyeliner is a metallic silver. It is very similar to Guerlain’s Silver, and it is a little darker than the other three silver shades here. (Review)
  • Make Up For Ever #8L Aqua Eyes is a metallic silver. It is a little lighter than the other four silver shades here. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Dime 24/7 Liner is a metallic silver. It is nearly identical to Milani’s Silver.(Review)
  • Guerlain Silver Stylo Yeux is a metallic silver. It is very similar to L’Oreal HIP’s Silver Lightning; it is a little darker than the other three metallic silver shades here. (Side note: I received this relatively recently, but yet I could hardly find any information on it… anywhere.)
  • Urban Decay Gunmetal 24/7 Liner is a darkened silver-gray with shimmer. (Review)
  • CoverGirl Silver Spark Liquiline Blast is a bluish silver-gray. It’s similar to Gunmetal, but it is bluer and has less shimmer. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Uzi 24/7 Liner is a blackened silver. I was hoping to find you a dupe for this one but no such luck. (Review)

Thoughts

DUPE ALERT! The first five shades are all quite similar: Milani Silver, L’Oreal HIP Silver Lightning, Make Up For Ever #8L, Urban Decay Dime, and Guerlain Silver . L’Oreal HIP Silver Lightning and Guerlain Silver is are a hue darker than the other three. Make Up For Ever #9L is the lightest of the five.

Product Formulas/Wear: I have no notable issues with wear with any of these formulas (with the exemption of Guerlain’s Stylo Yeux, which I have not tested). They all wear all day for me (tested for at least 12 hours) without budging or migrating. L’Oreal HIP and Milani are the creamiest, with Urban Decay’s 24/7 Liners following shortly after (still creamy, though). Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes are firmer but still doesn’t tug on the lash line. CoverGirl Liquiline Blasts sometimes need a second pass for true color pay off but otherwise wear fine.

What are your favorite silvers and grays?

The CoverGirl e/l is pretty, but I didn’t like the hard, waxy texture of the violet one at all. The Milani Liquif’Eyes are infinitely better – smooth, stays put, true to color.

I like Urban Decay’s Oil Slick and am really digging MAC’s latest Black Swan, but those are more like silvered/grayed-out blacks.

FYI, all Milani is buy 1 get 1 50% off at CVS this week (through 12/4).
It looks like they have a lot of really decent eyeliner colors.

Thanks for the comps Christine!

I recently spotted a silver eyeliner pencil from Dior that is simply gorgeous, but I can’t remember how it’s called… Hopefully, some day I will be able to put my hands on it (despite the price tag!) and then I’ll let you know the name! 😉

Do you have MAC Pearlglide in Wolf (from the LE Pearlglide release a couple years ago)? I’m interested to see how that compares to some of those darker gray colors. I LOVE Wolf, but of course it was LE and I haven’t seen it rereleased yet. I was hoping it would be released with this years Pearlglides, but no such luck… 🙁 I like to find a dupe for it.

hey christine, i think including LE would actually kind of be useful because if you had/have it and are running low you could compare it with things currently on the market, and it could also help find dupes if there was something you were desperately after… but then again thats just what i think.

I get a lot of angry, angry emails from readers who can’t purchase them – I’ve done it in the past, and the backlash can get pretty rough. If there’s a highly coveted limited edition product, I do often try to mention dupes if I can, or if I’m asked. On the flip side, if something permanent reminds me a lot of a highly coveted limited edition product, I try to mention it when describing the permanent product.

The only one I have is Silver Lightning and I love how bright and metallic it is. All the swatches are pretty. I must try every single one! Thanks for the comparisons and swatches.

Ohhh! I love Uzi! This post makes me realize that I only have one silver eyeliner, and it’s Sephora’s Silver Electro…I’d say it’s closest to Milani Silver or Make Up For Ever #8L, only with subtle glitter.

Awesome post! I really dig my Milani silver pencil. It glides on so easily and has a great vibrant color. I like to use it above black liner in a thin strip. Do you have the NYX pencil in pots and pans? I think that’s the name. Another good silver but more for smudging and lid color I guess.

Thank you so much for doing these, I think the side to side comparisons are excellent when you want a specific color, and not all of us want can run around to swatch them ourselves! Thanks again!

thank you SO much for these comparisons & dupes! I was looking for silver & gold eyeliners, good to know that Milani has goid items overall, I love their nail polish.

i once bought mac powerpoint in silverplate! i really loved it! than it was discontinued! it made me really sad because i finally found a great silver color! i hope your swatches will help me find a new one (i miss my silverplate)

Chanel Crayon Kohl in Graphite is almost identical to UD Uzi (of course I’m comparing my hand swatch to your photo on my computer monitor). I was looking at that colour and thinking “WOW! I want that eyeliner!” and then I remembered that I had a gunmetal grey already.
