Formula Overview

The lipstick is supposed to have 8-hour wear, no transfer, "vivid matte color," and a "naked-lip feel." Per the brand, it should "deliver opaque matte color in one coat." Well, "coat" is difficult because of how firm, stiff, and dry the physical lipstick is, so it was not possible to get an even, fluid one-coat and had to really be pulled and tugged the across painfully and then I used my lips to really blend the color together.
I'd recommend using a lip brush or first swatching the top layer of the lipstick on the back of your hand to help soften/warm it up, which made it marginally more pliable on my lips, though still one of the stiffer lipsticks I've had the unpleasant experience of trying.
It felt very lightweight, but the matte formula was clingy and made my lips look drier/emphasized lip texture and caught on flakiness. If your lips are not naturally pretty smooth, I think this would be difficult to make look even and smooth, even with exfoliating.
Once I was able to get past the stiffness, it did have semi-opaque to opaque color payoff, and it was very long-wearing and fairly transfer-resistant, so it did make it through a meal. Most of the shades stained to some degree, too, which helped the longevity and look of the lipstick as it wore down.
The formula was lightly drying overall, though not nearly as drying as I would have expected (nor as drying as it felt in its clinginess). There did not seem to be any scent or taste.

As someone who doesn’t mind using MAC Retro Matte (in the tube) formula over prepped lips and MAC Prep & Prime Lips, I may possibly give No Rules a try since it may be perfect for when I get my court dates, as I doubt that it would need touching up. Then again, with having to speak quite a bit, that could cause the dreaded * effect!
Since returning to makeup and the blog I have noticed a lot of really terrible makeup being reviewed. I know that a lot of brands reformulated while I was gone but given the decrease in usage during the pandemic you would think that they would have focused on making truly exceptional makeup. These lips are atrocious and not particularly inspiring in shade, either.
Your poor lips! They both look painful and drying as well. Nothing nice, except maybe the colours with these two.
This is the very WORST of the matte lipsticks, even though the shade colour of No Rules is quite a pleasant one.
I bought a few of these and admit I really have to work to apply them well, but love the shades and they last nicely! For the price, I took the challenge!!
