Revlon HD Tourmaline (510) Ultra HD Lip Lacquer

Revlon Ultra HD Lip Lacquer ($8.99 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is supposed to deliver “true color clarity” with “vivid high-impact shine and a “lightweight feel” that is “never sticky.” The gloss has a creamy consistency to it that is a little gel-like, and though it doesn’t feel heavy, it is a thicker consistency. There’s a light tackiness to it initially, which I find develops to a noticeable tackiness after a couple of hours–if you don’t like thicker, tackier glosses, I don’t know that these are for you. The wear of these darker shades ended up being longer than average, which was nice, and I didn’t have issues with the gloss feathering, but I’m not prone to feathering, so your mileage may vary. I think a doe-foot applicator might have made the gloss easier to apply, because around the edges, the brush will splay out and give a more jagged edge, due to the thickness and spreadability of the gloss itself. There is a very subtle sweet scent, but it’s very, very hard to detect except in the tube. They weren’t drying on me, but they weren’t hydrating either.

From what I’ve heard (but I’m not in contact with Revlon, so this is an observation) and seen, this formula is replacing the ColorBurst Lipgloss range, which seems to be vanishing from online and my local displays are empty.

Revlon HD Tourmaline (510) Ultra HD Lip Lacquer ($8.99 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a bright, fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a white sparkle. It had mostly opaque color coverage, which applied fairly evenly, but it could have gone on better. It wore well for five hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. NYX Sugar Cookie (P, $5.00) is less sparkly, sheerer. Urban Decay Crush (P, $19.00) is less glossy. Milani Flashy (P, $7.49) is more shimmery. MAC Style Packed (LE, $15.00) is lighter, less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Revlon HD Pink Ruby (515) Ultra HD Lip Lacquer ($8.99 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a bold, brightened pinky-red with fuchsia shimmer and sparkle. It had rich, opaque color coverage that went on evenly and lasted for six hours. MAC Glam (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery. Revlon Adorned (P, $7.49) is cooler-toned with a pinker (less red) base. MAC Impassioned (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery. Estee Lauder Violet Rain (LE, $22.50) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Revlon HD Carnelian (545) Ultra HD Lip Lacquer ($8.99 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium-dark burgundy red with subtle, cool undertones and a creamy finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a high-shine finish. It applied beautifully and evenly, except along the edges due to the bristles of the brush (be very slow and methodical when applying with the applicator!). It wore well for five and a half hours. Guerlain Rouge Parade (920) (LE, $30.00) is brighter, lighter. MAC Viva Glam I (LE, $15.00) is warmer. MAC Utterly Tart (LE, $15.00) is less red. Chanel Crushed Cherry (P, $29.50) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Those last two colors are so pretty! I’m hesitant to purchase though. I usually find the smell of drug store lip products incredibly strong and chemically.

Ooh, I’m really excited for the rest of your reviews of these! These three (especially Pink Ruby, wow), look gorgeous but I personally find bright glosses too high maintenance for myself.

Ginny Avatar

At least Pink Ruby is a decent replacement for Adorned. I wouldn’t have gone for any of the reds in this line… but that dark red looks so slick and juicy! Might need it.

Tara Avatar

I have chronically dry lips. I have Sjorgren’s plus the skin problems that accompany it, plus Rosacea, Most lip products irritate me, even certain balms. From expensive, down to drugstore ones. I have had Carnelian for the better part of a month. I have no problems with it.

Lotus Avatar

Hi Tara! I’m sorry to learn of those struggles and I hope you have something that aids you comfortably! Thank you for sharing, I appreciate it and knowing you’ve had good luck with this! I wish you the highest and best good for your health! <3

I’ve been lemming Crushed Cherry and Rouge Parade. I knew it would swatch similar to the Guerlain but I see the difference in the texture/brightness of the shade. I certainly don’t think I can justify all three purchases. I’ll need to get this ASAP and see if I still feel the need for the high end RP.

I just reviewed Pink Ruby last week on my blog, I loved it with the sole exception of the brush and the finest bit of grit I detected when I applied it. I like the high shine and the subtle 3D effect of the glosses, which is something I’d expect of a higher end brand.

These colors are far too bold for me to wear personally, but they’re SO gorgeous. I love the fuschia flash effect in Pink Ruby. Would it be entirely crazy to buy it just to wear around the house and pretend to be fabulous?! 🙂

Elena Avatar

I’ve picked up a couple, but unfortunately, formula is a miss for me. It felt like I needed a spatula to spread it. Tourmaline did not look good on me at all. And I swear if memory not failing, in the tube Pink Ruby looks exactly like Chanel’s Erotic Glossimer from early 2000s. I never wore this out, but I love the colour too much. It’s a replacement of the nostalgic value, but not sure that to do with it now either.
You, on the other hand, look positively gorgeous in all of these! 🙂

Sarah Avatar

Awesome swatch pictures!! Have you tried NYX lip products? They are my personal favorite, especially because I am not really a gloss fan. As you kindly pointed out some can get sticky and tacky and I am not a fan of that!

Sylirael Avatar

ZOMG – how fabulous are Pink Ruby and Carnelian!?! Carnelian even has that ever-so-slightly muted mystique to it that I am mildly obsessed with at the moment…

6 months form now, when Revlon finally decides to bring these here, I will be all over some of them. I had to roll my eyes a little bit at the ‘HD’ in the name, but at least you can say from these ones that you get saturated, opaque colour!

Lisa Avatar

I bought one of these last week and returned it. It was WAY TOO TACKY FOR ME!!! Love all the shades you covered today! I won’t be tempted. Too many lines out their can accomplish the job with out my lips feeling like they are sticking together! Another reason I stay away from the drugstore! I haven’t attempted a drugstore purchase in ages, and when I do I end up returning it!

Sarah S. Avatar

I work at CVS and these have been staring me in the face. I can’t wait for more reviews from you so I can decide which ones to buy. Thanks, Christine!

Phoebe Avatar

Christine, just wondering — you gave two of the glosses As, though they were somewhat tacky, despite their claim to be never sticky. Is that what prevented them from getting an A+?

Ryou Avatar

How freaking gorgeous is Carnelian? I’m a bit sad that they discontinued the ColorBurst Lip Gloss range, as there are a few shades that I wanted to pick up, but… Carnelian. <3

Lulle Avatar

Pink Ruby is a show-stopper! I almost bought it, but then I chose Citrine. Stunning gloss but I have real difficulties achieving a clean line at the edge. I really wish it had a doe foot applicator too!

Jade Avatar

OF COURSE THEY’RE DISCONTINUING THE ONLY REVLON LIP PRODUCT I LIKE.

Actually I’m pretty gutted. This formula doesn’t sound that similar (in terms of texture & hydration) to the ColorBurst range, which is what makes it so standout for me. I’ll have to think really hard on whether I want to grab backups. I know I’m definitely buying Adorned for everyone for Christmas!!!
