OCC Yaoi Lip Tar Review, Photos, Swatches

OCC Yaoi Lip Tar

A Bright, Metallic Pink to Steal the Show

OCC Yaoi Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “perfectly pink perlescence.” It’s a vibrant hot pink with blue undertones and a lighter pink shimmer-sheen. I thought it was a bit like OCC Nylon when I saw it in the tube, but it seems a bit darker, not quite as neon. Chanel Extatique is much more subdued. MAC Candy Yum Yum is cooler-toned, a bit brighter, and has no shimmer. MAC Quick Sizzle doesn’t have the shimmer, so it is a bit darker. MAC Show Orchid is them ost comparable, though it isn’t quite as vibrant and the shimmer is finer–less metallic. Milani Flashy is slightly lighter, but it has a similar finish–grittier, though.

This shade is bright and opaque with a shimmering, metallic finish. It has a lot of that sheen you’d expect in a gloss but with the lightweight feel of Lip Tar, which are really liquid lipsticks (with a vengeance). You definitely don’t want to over-apply these, because it will lose its metallic sheen if you put too much on. Like other Lip Tars, you don’t need much to get opaque color. The texture of this one is just a smidgen less-smooth than other Lip Tars–it’s really something you wouldn’t even notice if the others weren’t so smooth. I’ve been wearing this shade since just after six this morning, so we’re closing in on eight hours at the writing of the review–I ate breakfast as well as drank two cups of coffee, and it’s 90% intact.

P.S. — I have to perform wear tests for the remaining three shades, so I won’t have those reviews up until tomorrow and/or the next day 🙂

I want to try these lip tars but I need them to put it in a tube that has some kind of applicator. Seems like reapplying it would be a hassle and/or messy. They are really pretty though.

They used to come in a tube with a slant tip applicator, but OCC changed them. I actually think this packaging is better for this product. These are better applied with a lip brush. I think any other kind of applicator would smear too much product on… That was the problem with the old packaging. I do agree that these are a bit high maintenance, though.

PoetrysTruth Avatar

Oh I didn’t know they used to come with an applicator. So you have to carry a lip brush to reapply? *sad face* Someone should come up with a container you can transfer them into with a nice applicator with better control. I would buy them in a heartbeat

Christine Avatar

I will say that, realistically, these wear pretty long and hard, that you don’t need to do much reapplying. You can definitely apply with a fingertip in a pinch – I do about half the Lip Tar swatches that way (because I don’t have enough lip brushes). And if you REALLY wanted, you could use the needlenose of an applicator to do it, it’s just not as easy, LOL!

Miss J Avatar

I can’t imagine trying to use the needle nose tip, lol. I would make a mess for sure. I didn’t have a problem with the old packaging. I think a needle nose/slant tip hybrid would have been a better option…and maybe a disclaimer with the product telling people not to continuously squeeze product out during application, LOL.

I pretty much ditto Christine’s comments. 🙂 These are a little less convenient than other lipstick forms, but definitely not THAT high maintenance to where frequent reapplications are needed. I get about 8 hours with only minor fading. I typically don’t carry these with me, and I just slap on some clear gloss or balm when these start to wear a bit. If you wanted to reapply, though, you could definitely use a finger like Christine said; I suggest the pinky! 🙂 I’m not sure if OCC does this now, but I know when ordering from Sephora, the product comes in a pouch with mini lip brush, so you could always take that. Or you could bring along a few disposable sponge tip applicators then dispose of them after any reapplication; I think that would be the least messy option.

Wow! You look great in both this and the red. I bet the gold and white would be great to glam up some of the regular shades, too – to mix and create new colors. I have been waiting for these since I first tried a Lip Tar, and now I can’t wait until they are released. Thanks for the heads up!

By the way – keep up the great work. I don’t know how you do it (unless you work on it 24 hours per day), but you have the best blog. 🙂

Well they have a shade called Anime. So now we have a hi-frost finish eletcic pink shade call Yaoi. I want to pick it up at IMATS. lol (Actually I can stop laughing like Renfield from the original Dracula movie of 1931.)

TygerKitty Avatar

So, so beautiful! I think this is the perfect shade of pink for my skin tone… I need to pick this up and try lip tars once and for all!

Cat Avatar

I took the plunge and bought this and Super NSFW based on these reviews and I love them! Everytime I wear this I get a ton of compliments. Lip tars are my new favorite makeup product!

Veronica Avatar

I had to do a double-take when I saw the name. Ah, the yesteryears of my teenage anime days.

This is gorgeous, though. I love the metallic look, so I might have to try these out. 😀

Vincent Avatar

I’m currently in my teen anime days, so I am totally just buying this for the name. I wonder how many people will realize how dirty the name actually is! Hahaha

VickyM Avatar

I´m currently on my early 20s anime days…lol I´ll never abandon manga/anime entirely for the rest of my life that´s for sure…and I would totally buy this if it was available here even though I don´t really like the shade 🙂 .

Actually yaoi is an acronym for a joke on the content of the maleXmale female-oriented media in general in Japan. They took that joke and ran with it! But really it’s kind of funny compared to some of the less tasteful product names out there.

I’ll just die laughing once I see a tutorial with something to the effect “…and now I’ll be using OCC Yaoi all over my lips.”

All I can think is nothing scream Gay pride then shimmer hot pink lip product.

Oh my goddd, the name is killing me! XDDD I love Milani Flashy so maybe when I run out I’ll buy this instead… who am I kidding, I’m gonna buy this no matter what just cos its so outrageous and fun! <3

To me, this looks similar to Kat Von D liquid lipstick in Backstage Bambi. I am really excited about these new shades! However, I don’t think I’d end up wearing it too often, because I usually grab my lipstick on the way out of the door to put on in the car.

MissLovely210 Avatar

I jumped right up when I thought it is *extremely* similar to Cover Girl’s lipstick in Enchantress #365. Looks exactly the same, all the way down to the frost! Good, inexpensive dupe for this Lip Tar, I’d say!

VickyM Avatar

I wonder how a Yuri shade would look? what color would it be? or could we get a shoujo shade? or maybe an ecchi shade? I imagine a bold red shade for that one lol.

Brenda Avatar

Yeah this is the kind of wear time I get from them as well. I love the feel of the formula and the colours but I never get longer than a couple hours. Going to try layering to see if that helps next time I wear one.

Hannah Avatar

Hi Christine.
Do you have any suggestions on how to manage dry lips? I want matte lipsticks so bad but I can’t pull it off 🙁 its always flaky and dry even though I moisturize it.Im stucked with satin and amplified finishes.

PS I love your site and im addicted to it. I check it everyday!

Thanks,
Hannah

Like many others I just had to comment because of the name. Have no desire to wear frosted hot pink personally, but it’s making my LIFE right now that there is a product out there with this name.

VickyM Avatar

LOL YAOI lol, only for the name I would buy it…sadly OCC doesn´t exist where I live, but still the name makes it a winner. Yaoi is a japanese type of anime/comic genre…lol google it and you will see why the name of this lip tar is funny 😛 .

Kyuu Avatar

OH MY GOSH /WHAT IS THIS NAME/??

Haha, I haven’t tried any of OOC’s lip tars before, but I’ve gotten recommendations for several friends. That and the name of this one pretty much solidify me making grabby hands at this one.

OOC knows where my fangirl heart is at 😛

L Avatar

I’m on a shopping ban, not buying anything online for myself. I only shop for cosmetics online, because there is nothing where I live. However, the name, the colour, I really want this. I think this will be my christmas gift to me c:. <3

Danielle Avatar

Can this be toned down with the white or any white (not 100% expert on OCC’s lip tar rainbow)? Its pretty but GEEZ IS IT BRIGHT! You wanna make a statement, wear this.
