NYX Merengue Butter Gloss

NYX Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is supposed to have sheer to medium color coverage, a non-sticky texture, and be a hydrating formula. They feel really creamy going on, and they’re comfortable to wear with a lightly tacky texture that doesn’t feel heavy. The wear is slightly below average (three hours), but for something with as much creaminess, it is decent. Something I kept experiencing was just uneven coverage, though, where the color tended to settle into lip lines and/or look splotchy applied. I think they work better as a layering product (over lipstick or the like), rather than alone. The formula has a sweet, vanilla scent and was lightly hydrating.

NYX Merengue Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “pink lilac.” It’s a cool-toned, light cotton candy pink with blue undertones and a cream finish. It’s the type of milky pink that looks pretty in the tube, but it doesn’t work as well on its own as the color settles into lip lines. It had semi-opaque pigmentation. This one applies better than many iterations I’ve tried, but it doesn’t look great by itself–it’s really a product that would be better layered over a lipstick or lip liner. The gloss wore three hours on me. MAC Pure Silliness (LE, $15.00) is slightly pinker. MAC Carousel (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Patentpink (LE, $20.00) is less glossy. MAC Long Love Love (P, $19.50) is similar. MAC Viva Glam Nicki 2 (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Saint Germain (LE, $15.00) is a touch darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX Strawberry Parfait Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “fuchsia.” It’s a medium, cool-toned pink with a cream finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, which applied so-so; it blended in more with the natural lip color, which helped camouflage the unevenness, but it was there. This shade wore well for two and a half hours on me. NARS Angelika (P, $26.00) is less glossy. Chanel Baie Rose (89) (LE, $27.00) is sheerer. Milani Pink Lady (07) (P, $5.49) is a touch lighter. L’Oreal Florid Pink (LE, $7.99) is less glossy. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX Sugar Cookie Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright fuchsia.” It’s a medium-dark, fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a cream finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff, which applied somewhat evenly but it did look splotchy at times. This shade wore well for three and a half hours. NARS Priscilla (P, $26.00) is brighter, redder. MAC Pink Poodle (By Request) (LE, $15.00) is shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Crush (P, $19.00) is purpler. MAC Style Packed (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

For me, my main rave has always been about how the formula feels. It’s nicely cushiony and slick, and I don’t find it sticky, which is something I hate in a gloss. I also find the Almay Liquid Lip Balms really similar and like them because of this.

I will also say that I’ve got Strawberry Parfait and, because it’s got that translucency AND about the same depth of color as my lips, it doesn’t look patchy on me. It just gives a slight pink tone and some shine. So the effect is different with more pigmented lips and/or over a lipstick with similar pigmentation. But, I can definitely see where it wouldn’t look as nice if the gloss color shows up more on your lips, because it’s not even enough.

They’re nicely priced, too, so hopefully one of the better performing ones catches your eye, because I think they feel really nice on the lips. 🙂

I already have the other 2 but I will have to pick up Sugar Cookie, it’s gorgeous!

I have to say, I think the new shades have slightly better pigmentation – I really liked Red Velvet, Raspberry Tart and Angel Food Cake.

Now I’m hungry 🙁

YAY! I’m so glad that you’re swatching and reviewing more of these! I love them, and I’ve been wanting to see if I can get some more colours 🙂

Sugar cookie is pretty on you!

Aside: does it make me a terrible person that it annoys me that the first one is called ‘merengue’? Since the rest of thm are dessert named, I was assuming they meant ‘meringue’ – ‘merengue’ is a kind of music from the Dominican Republic! Not that that isn’t a totally legitimate and worthy name for a lipgloss, I just… expected the egg-white dessert!

Thanks for the swatches Christine! I think the colors are great, and they certainly appeal more to me than MAC’s lipglasses for example, especially for the price. I definitely think I’ll be picking up a few.
