NYX Haute Melon Lipstick

NYX Haute Melon Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a creamy semi-opaque coral with a natural shine. It looks more orange in the tube, but over my lips, it looks a bit lighter–almost pinker–due to the natural pinkness of my lips. There’s also a translucency to the color that lets the natural lip color peek through; it’s not really sheer, but it’s not typically opaque. It’s similar to NARS Niagara. Laura Mercier Tangerine is a touch more orange. MAC Crosswires is more orange. Lancome Chris & Tell is lighter. theBalm Strawberry is pinker. Bite Beauty Rose is more intense.

This shade had more slip than other shades I’ve tried within the range, so the color does slide around a bit, which can cause minor unevenness. It’s lightweight even though it’s creamy. I imagine that its shorter wear time of three hours may be due, at least in part, to the same slippery texture that gives it slight application issues. Mine didn’t have any scent, but other NYX lipsticks I’ve tried have almost been vanilla scented. I’ve had this for some time before opening it, though, so it’s possible the scent faded away over time (a lot of my budget-friendly lipsticks lose their scent very quickly).

Very promising color! I’m actually OK with lipsticks not lasting too long on me, since I have to drink water ALL THE TIME not to be dehydrated!

One lil question though: I see something on the lipstick (looks like a wire or something). What is it?

thank you for this! i would absolutely love you to have more reviews of the nyx lipsticks, especially the round ones..i am particulaly interested in the creamy, non-shimmery shades and how they actually look on, it is so difficult to tell from the website and swatches online are scarce!

I researched NYX lipsticks and theres an ingredient BHA that is in it that is not good for you. So Im not using their products that contain BHA.

I’d like to point out that testing on BHA is inconclusive enough that some trials pointed to it being a potential carcinogen and some pointed to it preventing cancer, so it’s hard to say. I know the old tests they did with laboratory animals and saccharine showed there was a cancer risk when they force-fed a rat like five times their weight in saccharine, which isn’t a very realistic intake model for anyone using it voluntarily. I don’t even think they print those warning messages on Sweet n Low packets anymore!

At any rate, BHA is used in a preservative in many foods, so if you are concerned about it, hopefully you’re scouring the labels of everything you’re putting into your body. Avoiding it as a lipstick preservative isn’t as important if you didn’t notice it was in your cereal.

Oooh, that color looks great! A lot of the coral lippies I have tend to pull too orange on me so at this price point, I’ll definitely have to check it out!! Thanks, Christine! =)

This is why I wanted it… It sold out like the second it got to the UK. This is close enough for me. Ordered it earlier and I already have buyer’s remorse (delivery was obscene!) 🙁 Hopefully when it gets here I’ll forget all about it and love it.

I may enjoy this if I use up what I want in the time to wear this during spring and summer. I suppose I could use this year round though.

I recently posted an article mentioning this shade as an option for Pantone’s Color of the Year, Tangerine Tango! I thought this shade would be a great choice for those intimidated by the orange, as this shade leans more coral.

I just recieved this and Paris in the mail today and I found that the 2 were almost completely different in scent and texture.
Paris has a soapy scent/taste and is much more slippery than Haute Melon.
Haute Melon on the other hand has no scent or flavour and felt more waxy and therefore clung to my lips more compared to Paris which slips around a fair bit.
Hopefully NYX will reformulate all of their round lipsticks to how Haute Melon is now. I find that it wears better than the usual and feels more natural on the lips.
Great review, this is what made me want HM in the first place 🙂

Ended up buying this, love the color when swatched and it looks just perfect on you, but I have major application issues with it! Even if my lips aren’t chapped, it’ll chap them and when I’m applying it they make my lips end up looking horrible uneven :<
