NARS Haight-Ashbury, Last Frontier, Mulholland Drive High-Pigment Eyeliners Reviews & Swatches
Haight-Ashbury
NARS Haight-Ashbury High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.03 oz.) is a deep, grayish-taupe with subtle, warm undertones. The more the product was built up and layered, the “cooler” it looked–the base was warmer, so sheerer application made it look more like an ashy brown. The texture was velvety with good glide but not too much slip/creaminess, so the eyeliner applied comfortably to the waterline and lower lash line but didn’t migrate while it was setting. I was able to smudge and blend out the edge of the eyeliner as it dried down. This particular shade had more semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation. It wore well for nine hours well on my lower lash line and a solid six hours on my water line.

Formula Overview
$24.00/0.03 oz. - $800.00 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have "12-hour wear' that is "humidity-proof," "sweat-proof, "water-resistant, and "transfer-resistant" paired with "high pigment." The texture definitely felt a bit gel-like, as intended, as the product glided across my skin without tugging or dragging, and the pigmentation seemed a bit inkier and richer. They're creamier--but not too creamy--than previous iterations of the formula, and they wore significantly better than most of NARS' pencils have for me.
Some shades lasted longer than others, but most shades were semi-opaque to opaque in pigmentation, comfortable to apply, went on evenly, and were easy to use. Most lasted for eight to ten hours on my lower lash line with wear on my water line being six to eight hours in most instances. They didn't fade/thin on me cleanly; they did migrate to the outer corner (occasionally the inner corner), though.

Last Frontier
NARS Last Frontier High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.03 oz.) is a deep, cool-toned brown with a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one layer, which was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The texture felt creamier than it might have appeared in the swatch, as it went on fluidly and never tugged on my lash line. The color applied evenly, and while it was quick-drying, I was able to smudge the edge if desired. It started to migrate a bit toward the outer corner (but didn’t smudge below) after nine hours of wear on my lower lash line, while it lasted closer to seven hours on my waterline.

Mulholland Drive
NARS Mulholland Drive High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.03 oz.) is a shimmering bronze with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in one pass, which adhered evenly and smoothly to my lash line without dragging or tugging on it. The pencil had a smooth, lightly creamy texture that glided across the skin with ease but never felt too wet, so it didn’t migrate or sink into fine lines as it dried down. It stayed on well for 10 hours on my lower lash line (I did not test it on my waterline due to the amount of shimmer).

The pencil itself looks so red but the colour when applied/swatched is gorgeous. I am very tempted by this one even though it’s twice the price of my beloved Sephora pencils.
Mulholland Drive is gorgeous!
Because I’m a sucker for any truly exquisite bronze shade, Mulholland Drive has me ooh’ing and ahh’ing over it! That’s a gem!
I also love Haight-Ashbury. This shade may or may not do something for my eye color, I’m thinking. The one grungy dark taupe liner that makes my eyes look bright is UD Corrupt, so idk?
Aw, I was hoping Mullholland Drive was going to be more red-toned.
I like the Mulholland Drive shade, but whilst perusing the dupe list I found that I liked some of the Colour Pop Creme liners and Sephora eye pencils better. Very similar shades and at about half the price.
Just a quick question Christine, do you also test tight lining when reviewing eyeliners? So if there’s transfer, flaking, etc?
x.
No, I test on my waterline and lower lash line as appropriate (e.g. something with a lot of shimmer or glitter, I would not comfortably test on my waterline) due to my upper lash line/waterline being extremely sensitive (many products can cause eczema flare ups on my entire lid, cause my upper lash line to swell up, etc. and put me out of commission for 1-3 weeks).
Things like transfer, flaking, etc. are all things that would occur if applied to the lower waterline/lash line, though, so if any of those things occurred, they would be noted in the review above!
Thanks for the info, much appreciated! x.
Oh yup I need Mulholland Drive !!
I’m down for Haight Ashbury
Mulholland Drive came home with me today and I LOOOOVE it. As much as I really love Sephora’s pencil liners, nothing in their line seems really close to this (I need to ask Genevieve what liner she saw that was close in colour). I am thinking of going to get a 2nd one since liner pencils are something I actually do use up. If the wear time is good and I continue to be smitten, I will definitely get another. I see that these are permanent but Sephora has been pruning down what they carry of NARS so I don’t want to take a chance that this will be gone from their stores in 6 months.
There is an odd selection of shades carried at retailers – Saks seems to have all or nearly all the shades, whereas Ulta/Sephora carry a limited selection. Nordstrom seems to carry most of the new lipsticks, but then Ulta and Sephora have an edited range! So weird.
I don’t know if Sephora has all the shades (Mullholland Drive was the only one I wanted) but, as yesterday was a civic holiday here, the store manager told me “they’re launching tomorrow” (meaning today). There were all sorts of empty spaces in the NARS “gondola” so I guess a lot of stuff is launching. I was just pleased that (a) she was willing to go check the back for me (frankly, I was surprised she didn’t know about these pencils; it’s funny but I – who don’t work in “the trade” – seem to know a heck of a lot more about products and releases – than the people who work there) and also that I was able to purchase it because I remember when the Alluring Aquatics collection came out and I was at The Bay to purchase a few things and I was told they couldn’t sell them to me because, even though they had them, they hadn’t “officially launched” and I had to “come back tomorrow” (which was a WORK DAY!) I mean, I was standing there with my money in my hand, all ready to part with it and I was told “Nope. Oz is closed today. Come back tomorrow!
wow! A lot of times they will sell them if they have them in stock – it’s usually only super big launches (say a big collab or hero product like a UD Naked palette!) that might have to be held off until an official date!
