NARS Autumn Leaves Lipstick

NARS Autumn Leaves Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “translucent glistening brandy.” It’s a reddish orange with a subtle golden orange sheen. Sort of like a rusty orange, or the melding of the colors of the sunset. Chanel Sari d’Eau is brighter, more shimmery. Guerlain Orange Euphorique is lighter, peachier. Cle de Peau Danse du Feu is richer, more opaque. MAC Powerful is glittery and more orange.

This shade is part of the Sheer Lipstick range, which is, not surprisingly, on the sheerer side. From my experience with the range, though, it’s more semi-sheer with translucency but not really barely-there color. That’s something personally appeals to me, but if you were actually seeking subtle color, they may still be too pigmented for you!  It has a really great lightweight feel on the lips; thin with a natural glistening sheen.

Autumn Leaves delivers semi-opaque color coverage with that translucency NARS was talking about; you can see the natural lip color coming through.  I wore Autumn Leaves earlier this week, and it wore exceptionally well–it lasted for six hours and felt hydrating the whole time.  NARS lipsticks come in black, rubberized square tubes and are scent- and taste-free.  They contain a little more than the average lipstick (0.12 oz. vs. 0.10 oz.).

This colour is gorgeous and you look stunning! I am so excited for autumn right now. Can you suggest any colours that are similar (especially if they have that sheer finish) but not shimmery?

Hi Christine, I absolutely loveee your site..so thorough and such amazing pictures that have guided me in buying so many products! Just one suggestion,  I would love it if your site has sort of a “favourites” history, kind of like YouTube when you hit the like button, it’ll give you the list of videos that you’ve liked. This way I get to see what products I’ve liked so far and can decide what to buy once I accumulated many 🙂

@lillovelythings You can always create a Temptalia folder in your Bookmarks menu, and save all your favourite product reviews there 🙂 Similarly, you could also do the same thing using an online bookmarks manager, like delicious.com, or save your favourite reviews to your Pinterest account. Another option would be to screencap your favourite swatches/photos and save them to a folder on your desktop.

I love the colour, it will be great to wear with an amber red soft blush, I have Nars Joyous red its reminds me of joyous red but the texture is totally different.

Not something I could wear but every colour seems to look nice on you. It’s a bit of a bummer!
Also, if you don’t mind my asking, I’m curious about the packaging ratings. What makes it a 5 for you, with different types of make-up? For example with polish I reckon it’s how easy it is to work with the handle and the material used for better grip. Or I see that you give Nars blushes and such 5/5 for packaging which is for the fact that they use a rubbery material meaning when it falls the contents won’t break (that’s just a guess though). I know you’re really busy so I’m not expecting an answer but if anyone wants to enlighten me I would appreciate it, thanks! (Especially to you Christine for sharing all this with us, so frequently and everyday)

@sabrinasaytac I look at around 10 characteristics I believe for packaging – it depends on the product, as polish is packaged totally different from blush.  I look at overall construction, how durable it is likely to be (obviously I can’t tell you how it will hold up a year from now but based on past experience with similarly packaged products…), is it supposed to be travel-friendly (e.g. a palette), how easy is it to open/close, how’s the grip, will it break if you drop it once, how well glued in is a pan, is it too large (too small), etc. etc.

NARS’ rubberized packaging makes it easier to grip and also absorbs more of an impact than regular plastic – this being true not just if you were to drop it but if you had them shifting around in a makeup bag.

@Christine (Temptalia) @sabrinasaytac I don’t know *exactly* what happened (although I know it wasn’t dropped once in my possession), but somehow my NARS Cyprus shattered *everywhere* in the drawer I house it in, in a cabinet.

Christine-Temptalia Avatar

 @xamyx  @Christine  @sabrinasaytac How odd!

When we moved, they fork lifted all of my makeup storage units into the moving truck, and honestly, I didn’t do much to secure anything – other than all the drawers were rather full, so nothing was going to slide from one side clear across to the other side of a drawer. They just wrapped the drawers in place with plastic, put furniture pads around them, and loaded them. Drove about 1-2 hours, and everything is intact!

@Christine (Temptalia) @Christine @sabrinasaytac I’m thinking *maybe* my Cyprus was dropped at some point *before* I bought it. I had the same thing occur with the Too Faced Romantic palette (which luckily I checked before I left the mall), and they both came from the same Sephora. I now check everything immediately, LOL. After I bought Cyprus, I put it in a drawer, in a cabinet, and actually forgot about it for a while, but when I took it out to use it for the first time, it was all crumbly. It’s soft enough to just “press” back together, so I lost very little product, but it made all the other compacts all dirty.

@xamyx  @Christine  @Christine  @sabrinasaytac First of all, thanks a lot for taking your time Christine, it all makes sense! I’m very glad none of your make-up shattered, that would be horrendous! I have had so many valuable (not just price but sentimental value with some things as well) things broken/torn inside the truck while moving abroad (and back).

Also, xamyx, that sounds terrible! I have thankfully never had anything like that in the past but I will also check in the future! Thanks for sharing that with us.

Orange you glad I didn’t say Banana..

This stuck in my head for years and years and my freaking hairdresser said it to me last week and we both died laughing..  Anyhow, this one is lovely on Christine, but too orange pour moi!  Oh, and I’m still rather dumbfounded at how this pinky blush works with warm orangey lips.  I know it is supposed to be peachy pink, but it sure the heck looks pink to me.

jkj12 Avatar

This is beautiful! I wonder if this shade could work for me if I’m very fair and somewhat cool-toned? Or would the orange tones in this color be too much for me?

ac_palma Avatar

This looks amazing. Not a big fan of oranges but the brandy red with gold sparkle is beautiful. Add the semi-sheerness, the hydrating quality and solid wear and I’m sold. 🙂 it looks beautiful on you, Christine.

sanguine13 Avatar

I love this colour, but I am way too cool-toned to wear orange. :/ Blonde hair and orange lips would probably not look so hot. It is such a perfect autumn colour, though!

FaithRuddTrimmer Avatar

This is gorgeous! You look really stunning in this colour. Can you suggest any similar lipsticks that are not shimmery/glittery? I don’t care if they’re matte, sheer, whatever, I just have to have this colour and shimmery products don’t work for me at all 🙂

ticklishgypsy Avatar

Hey Christine, is this a new fall 2012 color that is not released yet?  Can’t find it on Sephora website or in stores.  Usually you post an “available” date but can’t find one.  Help please!

annedreshfield Avatar

This is SO gorgeous. My friend and I are both drooling all over this shade and can’t wait to swatch/test it. I’m much cooler than she is (blonde hair and blue eyes), but I still love this color…who knows, I’m going to try it! Normally I stay far away from oranges since I was always told they’d look bad on me, but I’m willing to totally break that rule for this shade. Fingers crossed!

I went to the NARS counter today just to double check Outlaw and be sure I wasn’t misrepresenting how pigmented it is (I wasn’t – will comment on that thread). I ended up buying this lippie – what a gorgeous orange that is just perfect for my colouring and the office. If you’re looking for an orange lipstick that isn’t as bold as some of the MAC shades, this is it. It’s expensive (here at least), but it’s beautiful.

I just bought this today and wow is it ever stunning.  It is such a true fall colour.  I love how it applies and feels on the lips!  Can’t wait to wear it in the fall <3
