Maybelline Retro, Too Cute, Sassy Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Glosses Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Retro
Maybelline Retro Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss ($7.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a deep burgundy with warmer undertones and a cream finish. The color coverage was good, though shy of truly full coverage, and while it did not appear streaky, it did pull into my lip lines noticeably. The gloss was light-medium in weight, moderately tacky, and comfortable to wear as it adhered well and didn’t slide around but was also lightly hydrating. It wore well for five and a half hours on me.
The formula is supposed to have “full coverage” that won’t “feather or migrate” paired with a “high-impact glossy finish.” The formula is light-medium in thickness–by no means a thin, featherweight gloss but not shy of being totally goopy or heavy-feeling–with moderate tackiness. I find that it initially went on feeling like a thicker, creamy gloss with a lot of slip, but it developed into more of a gel-like consistency that adhered better and did not slide around after 20 to 30 seconds. I did not experience feathering or migration with any shades tested so far (and I went for the deeper shades first!). The wear has ranged from four to six hours with a non-drying to lightly hydrating effect. The formula had a subtle, sweet scent but did not taste soapy or linger as long as I have experienced with Maybelline lip products in the past.

Too Cute
Maybelline Too Cute Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss ($7.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a medium pink with warm, yellow undertones and a cream finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that spread fairly well across the lips, but there was some streaking and settling into my lip lines. The texture was thicker but not goopy with noticeable stickiness, which might not be for everyone, though it lasted longer (five hours) and didn’t feather or slide around on my lips. The formula was non-drying to me.

Sassy
Maybelline Sassy Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss ($7.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a rich, medium-dark raspberry pink with cool, blue undertones and a cream finish. It was just shy of full coverage, and unless you have a defining characteristic like a lip freckle, I doubt it would be as noticeable. The gloss was smooth, creamy going on, and it spread evenly across the lips. It developed into a more gel-like texture after a minute or so, which hugged the lips without being clingy. This shade lasted for six hours and was lightly moisturizing while worn.

I love your eye look with Retro! It looks great paired together!
Now I need to add Retro onto my list, looks like Maybelline did great with this line 😀
Aw, thank you Aj!!
Yet another VLGs dupe…for Area. Does anyone think these are a take on that formula? Virtually every one has a VLGs dupe. Kind of makes them a must try.
I don’t think they feel comparable, personally!
Ooooh, Retro goes so well with your ABH eye look!
Thank you, Katherine!
Ooh, I am really loving how Sassy looks! Perfect shade for summer, too! ?
Retro isn’t bad, either, but having last winter’s Nars x Sarah Moon Lip Glides, I’m stocked up on deep, vampy lip gloss for now.
I like the texture of the Lip Glides more myself 🙂
Sassy is SO juicy and bright, and summery. Its so pretty!! And your lips look so great with these on!!
Thank you, Shannon!
Ooh, I’m so curious about these!! I have a number of the Maybelline Vivid Mattes, and I haaaate them – they’re so streaky on me. These look a lot more wearable! (And I love the look of Retro and Sassy on you.)
Thank you, Rae! 🙂 While not full coverage most of the time, they go on pretty nicely!
Oh my – Retro is such a glorious shade – in fact all the shades are pretty goo.
It is a bold color!
I have a dupe for Retro but not Sassy.
A word of warning, ladies!
If your lips are pigmented at all (i.e. not soft pink like Christine’s), Retro will look like a deep chocolate gloss with a hint of merlot. Pretty in its own way, but definitely a vampy brown. No burgundy for us here 🙁
