Marc Jacobs Beauty Provocouture Eye-Conic Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Provocouture
Marc Jacobs Beauty Provocouture Eye-Conic Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.21 oz.) features seven shades with four different finishes (velvet, satin, silk and lamé). The eyeshadow formula is supposed to have “lasting, velvety-rich pigment.” This is a very pink-dominated palette with pinks and mauves plus a deep brown and plum for contrast. There were issues with pigmentation across about half the palette and a few shades were too soft/powdery.
A few obvious differences between the new Eye-Conic palettes and the previous Style Eye-Con No. 7 palettes: they actually decreased by $10 in price (they used to be $59) with only a slight decrease in quantity (0.21 oz. vs. 0.25 oz.), and each eyeshadow has been named. The ingredient lists differ from shade to shade, which makes it harder to really compare easily, and I saw a lot of similar ingredients but order often varied; they seemed similar to me just by touching, wearing, and applying with maybe slightly higher dimethicone quantities in the shimmery shades and a slightly firmer press (but not stiff) for more matte shades (so less powder kicked up in the pan).

With Style
With Style is a pale pinky lavender with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which was somewhat buildable. The consistency was soft, lightly dusty in the pan, and more prone to sheering out on the lid. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Otherwise
Otherwise is a muted, medium mauve with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium pigmentation, which was buildable to semi-opaque coverage. As a result of the pigmentation, it was better as a transition or blending shade rather than an all-over-the-lid shade. The texture was on the dustier side, which resulted in a thin, sheerer shade in practice. It wore well for six and a half hours on me.

You Might
You Might is a medium-dark, purply mauve with subtle, cool undertones and warmer, golden shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was hard to really build up without using a dampened brush or a primer. The texture was slightly drier to the touch with the looser shimmer being more touchable, though it was blendable on the lid. This shade stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours.

As Well
As Well is a deep, blackened brown with warm, red undertones and flecks of gold and copper pearl. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, velvety texture that wasn’t too dusty or too firmly pressed in the pan. The eyeshadow was easy to blend along the edges and lasted for eight hours on me.

Just Stay

In Bed
In Bed is a brighter, medium fuchsia pink with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. There were the tiniest bits of micro-shimmer, but it performed and looked matte on the lid. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that sheered out just a bit on the lid but at least, it was very blendable and stayed vibrant when blended out. This shade wore well for eight hours on me but stained slightly.

This is a nice palette. I love the blush tones in it and makes it less scary with my fair skin looking brushed with warm purple shades.
The colors are gorgeous together!
I love the color story and the eye look you did using this one! However, I literally have either something already here that’s a spot on dupe, or will once I finally buy Viseart Amethyst Theory palette. And yet, I’m thinking that if I took my existing dupes (or close enough dupes), I could probably replicate this very bright, purpley smokey eye well enough to be satisfied with its outcome! (But I’m still getting Viseart Amethyst ?)
Thank you, Nancy! 🙂 Glad you have plenty of dupes!
I love my Viseart Amethyst palette! So good!
Of course you are Nancy! Good on you! Viseart is so much better.
Moderately disappointing. The look is super, though. I’ve found that duping the shades you lack can be more expensive than getting the palette. I get mj’s pun, but am I the only person who thinks of flds prairie dresses, with the name Provo-couture? I see a whole lot of Mireiile Enos (in Big Love) clones in Short Creek. Oversteeped in Under the Banner of Heaven, I guess.
I think singles will typically be more expensive than a $50-something palette if you try to dupe them all with new shades. But there’s a good chance people have a few similar shades and then maybe it’s just one or two that are MIA or “essential.”
It makes me think of 80s era Vivian Westwood.
I am glad to read your review- convinced me out of it…but that just might mean I buy a different one. Marc Jacobs is just calling my name lately.
LOL! Glad I could help 😉
Damn girl! This eye look is gorgeous! Holy moly you are talented I can see every shade you used and how well they blended together.
Do you find this is only a 2 look palette or could it be more diverse?
Aww, thank you, Hilda! I think you can get a few looks out of it, but they’ll have a similar tone since they are similar!
Thanks for the review Christine. The colors in the Palette are so attractive to the eye but
I can’t justify buying a B level product. Thanks for saving me the money !
My pleasure, Robin! 🙂
I almost feel like I like this better in the palette than I might IRL. Some of the colors didn’t swatch as I thought they would from initial photos and I have a lot of the ABH and Viseart dupes. My foray in to MJB may have to wait until I can see these suckers in person and determine my sense of urgency.
Definitely try to see them in person! I think if you like ABH/Viseart, you might enjoy this formula, though.
It’s nice but I was hoping the shades would all be B or better cause I’m hoarding my $$$$
I hear ya! 🙁
THIS is what I was hoping the White Russian on the Rocks Palette would be like – gorgeous pinks and plums. I’ll gladly be adding this to my wishlist!
Enjoy! 😀
I’m so tired of palettes with sub-par matte shades! I love the color story of this one but consider “With Style” and “Otherwise” central to putting together an office-appropriate look, and their scores are dismal. ?
I really like “Say It” but have Viseart Amethyst, so will be pulling that out to check out the dupe.
Thanks for your review!
So glad I could help, Bonnie!
If you wanted the pink/purple look that is so much the rage at the moment, this could be for you. However there are a couple of duds in here too and considering the price, I’d want it to be better.
A really stunning eye look Christine.
Thank you so much, Genevieve!
Someday, Christine, I’d love to see you list your top-rated mattes. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t remember seeing too many A grades. I’d be curious which ones you think deserve A+, A or A-. And, of those, how many are cool colors.
You can view them in the Swatch Gallery – http://www.temptalia.com/swatches/?t%5B%5D=12674&f%5B%5D=Matte&sorting=editor_desc
Thank you very much. I remember doing a search awhile ago and when I did, all the shadows came up — not just the mattes. I can be quite computer challenged that way. Anyway, this is quite a list and I’ve bookmarked it for further reference, lol. Thanks again.
Hi Anne,
In the Swatch Gallery, you can refine by a variety of parameters – including finish – so you just have to filter your results or start your search off more narrowly, and then you can sort the results in different ways.
Step 1: http://www.temptalia.com/swatch-gallery/
Step 2: By Color or Type
Step 3: Select as much or as little as you want – e.g. Pink, Eyeshadows – Powder, Finish – Matte, Availability – P (Permanent), Price – $15-$35, Undertone – Cool.
Step 4: Get Results
Step 5: You can Refine Results again or differently, and you can Sort by clicking on “Sorted By” drop down menu. There are 6 different sorting to choose from (and then their inverses, e.g. Newest/Oldest).
That’s a huge help. Thanks. That is so awesome. I can’t believe you have done all this. Again, I’m bookmarking this page. 🙂
Oh gee, this was the set I was most interested in, but 1/2 the shades look thin and weak, doubt they will hold up on my oily lids. You Might is my fave, and of course, very few close dupes that are permanent and single shadows, sigh. Will stick with my Viseart Amethyst
Glad you have other dupes/options 😀
The palette is disappointing, but your eye look is incredible!
Really great look Christine! 🙂 This might be an odd question, but how large are these pans? Are they smaller than the average single? The fact that they’re 0.03 g. each tells me they might be. I might pick up one of these palettes (probably not this one), but honestly only if I can depot it and it’ll “go” with my other singles/depotted shadows size wise.
Wow, I really really wish I could do my eyeshadow like that! ? Way back in high school I learned to do a somewhat correct Smokey eye (meaning light color all in brow bone, medium on lid, and darkest shade in crease & outer corner of lid) but no matter what I try I can’t seem to get out of this style and I have trouble with shading & picking good color combinations. What are some good tips for me?
