Chic Brick (112)

Make Up For Ever Chic Brick (112) Rouge Artist Lipstick (2020) ($23.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a muted, light-medium brown with soft, warm undertones and a satin finish. The consistency felt lightweight, smooth, and thin with a velvety-cream feel that was comfortable to apply and to wear.

It had rich color payoff that adhered evenly to my lips, though in the close-up photos there was a smidgen product that sank into my deeper lip lines but wasn’t noticeable in person. It wore well for four hours and felt lightly hydrating over time.

Formula Overview

$23.00/0.11 oz. - $209.09 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to "blur, smooth, and hydrate" with "intensity of a matte and the comfort of a cream" and delivers "ultra-pigment[ation]." The consistency reminded me of the more new-school "matte" formulas that feel velvety without wetness/shine--the ones that feel more silicone-heavy and primer-like, which are often thinner, too. I'd say that the new Rouge Artist formula has a little more traditional creaminess, so there was a satin shine (which was as marketed--satin finish!).

The consistency was smooth, lightweight, and thin without feeling clingy. In the close-up photos, there were several shades that looked like there were little bits scattered on my lips, almost like it had pilled, though I didn't feel it when I pressed my lips together and couldn't see it in person.

They had mostly opaque to opaque color coverage in a single layer. Most shades applied evenly and sat well enough on my lips, though there were some that emphasized my lip lines slightly. They wore for four to six hours on me with some of the very rich, deeper shades lasting a little longer than that. The formula felt mostly non-drying to lightly hydrating to me.

There was a sweet, slightly floral scent that was noticeable on for the first few minutes, but I didn't notice any taste.

Sassy Rhubarb (164)

Make Up For Ever Sassy Rhubarb (164) Rouge Artist Lipstick (2020) ($23.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a medium, rosy mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. The lipstick had a smooth, lightweight texture that was thin but not clingy with light glide and a touch of creaminess.

It yielded opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, though in the close-up photo I saw slight streaking along the edges of my bottom lip and a touch of product in my deeper lip lines. It stayed on nicely for four hours and felt lightly moisturizing while worn.

Poised Rosewood (166)

Make Up For Ever Poised Redwood (166) Rouge Artist Lipstick (2020) ($23.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a medium-dark mauve with cooler undertones and a satin finish. It was intensely pigmented with full coverage delivered in a single, fluid stroke. The texture was lightweight, lightly velvety with a touch of slip that adhered evenly to my lips.

There was a smidgen of product in my deeper lip lines that was visible in the close-up photo but not detectable from a normal viewing distance. This shade lasted well for four and a half hours and felt neither drying nor hydrating on me.

I actually have Chic Brick and it’s a pretty nude on my medium-deep skin. But I will admit that I miss their Artist Rouge Creme lipsticks – C107 was my go-to! That older formula reminded me so much of Pat’s LuxeTrance lipsticks – which I also miss…. sigh.
