Unconventional May Be More Conventional Than You Thought

MAC Unconventional Blush ($20.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as a “pale shimmering lavender” with a frost finish. It’s a pale pink with a hint of lavender and cool under-tones; there is an almost gray pull to the color that gives it a very cool, muted appearance. For a blush listed as a frost, it is softer, more shimmer-sheen than full of shimmer; more like a mix of frost and satin. MAC Lazy Sunday is warmer, pinker. MAC Full of Joy is a touch more lavender and less frosted–but the two are very similar. Make Up For Ever Smooth Talker is a touch pinker and less shimmery.

What was really noteworthy about this blush is that despite its light and cool coloring, it didn’t turn ashy against my medium complexion as some shades in this family are prone to doing. On my complexion, it ended up looking like a cool-toned pink highlighter–so a little shimmer, sheen, and a touch of color.  It had excellent color payoff and was very finely-milled, soft, and smooth to the touch and when applied.  It blended out beautifully.  The texture and application were both some of the best I’ve seen from MAC.  The blush wore for seven and a half hours well with some light but noticeable fading after eight hours.

Looks really pretty. I already own Full of Joy, but this one looks more dolly. Full of Joy is very hard in the pan and when applied it looks almost metallic to me.

It looks gorgeous on you Christine, but I’m so pissed. I had really wanted a more lavender/purple shade blush. We are due to have one eventually. This reminds me of Full of Joy, it leans too pink and as a pale person I cannot wear it. Come on MAC please make a true blue/grey/lavender shade blush.

I would love to try this as a highlight, but again, it’s not worth the effort of having to track it down. This is the time of year I stay as far away from the mall as possible, and I’m even more uncomfortable with online shopping around the Holidays.

Hmm, I was going to get a CP for this (not available in the UK) but if I already have Full Of Joy, Sakura and Azalea Blossom I think I can probably skip…right?

I’m not the first one to say it, but man am I jealous of how everything looks great on you, Christine! I fear this might look too pale on me, or make me look sallow, but I may have to try it if I see it in stores before spending the money.

How does this compair to MAC love Barbie Pearl blossom beauty powder?? I love that beauty powder for a blush on my pale skin. I love the soft pink shade with a touch of shimmer. Can I BEG you for a swatch comparison?!?! This really looks promising, I have been searching for a replacement product for my empty pearl blossom for over a year.

Thanks so much for everything that you do… you rock!

It’s not a good thing when you give a good review of a product and my only reaction is “Wait, what happened here?”, is it?

I’m so used to MAC’s LEs sucking that this one has thrown me for a loop!

… That said, it is a cute colour. And it almost looks like it could work in place of LatE… Hmmm.

Thanks Christine! 🙂

Do you think I can combine this with Pink Swoon (as a blush together) or will it be *too gray, or appear “off”? Hope that made sense!

Also, would this pair better with blue-based pinks like Lickable or magentas like Outrageously Fun?

If I have Full of Joy is it worth getting this one (Unconventional blush)? Or are they way too similar that you won’t be able to tell the difference on the cheeks? Thank u!

I ordered this blush online and just arrived in the mail today. the pigmentation is amazing as the texture. I have to admit, its a bit to purple ish / cool toned for me alone as a blush ( I mix NW15 and NC 20 foundation). Because of the coolness I decided to combine I’m The One and Warm Soul blush and the ending color looked perfect. It’s a good colored blush to have in my collection since Mac makes notting in their permanet line like it, but I don’t think I will wear on a regular basis
