MAC Tartan Tale: Hark the Heraldry Face Kit Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC Tartan Tale: Hark the Heraldry Face Kit
MAC Tartan Tale: Hark the Heraldry Face Kit
The Hark the Heraldry Face Kit ($38.00) includes two blushes and a beauty powder: Dame (sophisticated blue-pink), Plum Foolery (faint dusty plum), and Oh So Fair (pale pink; beauty powder). Both Dame and Plum Foolery are permanent shades. Oh So Fair was recently released with Venomous Villains.
- Dame is a subtly blue-toned medium pink that can go on sheer or be built up. On darker skin tones, this may not show up very well, though. It has a satin finish, so it has a softer sheen, less frostiness in its finish. This is a nice shade for everyday, and it’s particularly flattering on cooler, paler skin tones.
- Plum Foolery is a semi-sheer, rosy plum with a frosted sheen. This shade does work well on a variety of skin tones, and despite it being sheer, it does pack a punch on cheeks if you’re not careful.
- Oh So Fair is a soft, petal pink with subtle shimmer-sheen. It’s sheer and looks very, very subtle on my medium skin tone. I wouldn’t recommend this shade for darker skin tones, because I think it would have a tendency to turn ashy.
Each blush is 0.13 oz. (full-size is 0.21 oz.), while the beauty powder is 0.20 oz. (full size is 0.35 oz.). Ultimately, you’re getting approximately $23 worth of blush and $14 worth of beauty powder–total value around $37 with a price tag of $38. It’s not a value palette based on quantity of products, but you do get three products for $38 instead of buying two blushes ($18.50 each) and a beauty powder ($25.00) separately.

- Product: 28/30
- Value: 7/10
- Ease of Use: 4/5
- Packaging: 4/5
RECOMMENDATION: I really like the face kits, because sometimes MAC blushes can be too expensive to purchase on their own, so this palette lets you try more for less–and you won’t get through a pan any time soon.

Wow, I’m pretty much ‘leaving’ everything so far from this collection. When I first read descriptions of this launch, it didn’t catch my interest but I thought it might be different once I see some swatches etc. But nope! Oh well, saves me money :o)
i love the blush face palettes that mac comes out w/ for the holidays. i bought the 2 from last year. what a good deal! the only thing i wish mac did for this holiday colllection is to come out with diff products. ive noticed alot of the colors in the tartan tale collection are repromotes from collections that came out like month ago.
They all look great on you! I don’t think they’d suit my skintone, though. Thanks for the swatches.
I really like this set !:))
Okay – forgive my question, but what, exactly, is a ‘Beauty Powder’? Is it a blush?
It can be used however you want – it’s just a face powder – but it all depends on the shade and how light/dark you are.
I love Plum Foolery. It’s in one of my regular blush palettes that I use all the time. I’m interested to see more of these face kits – Maybe I’ll go back and take a look today – I’ve never picked one up but I might give them a second glance 🙂 Thanks!
I think these are nice everyday blushes, but nothing really wow about them, I think the packaging is cute though!
I love the idea of this collection, but so far the execution & actual products seem really disappointing! I’m losing interest quickly!
Hi Christine, could you please give me an idea of the dimensions of the powders? For example, could I used a 168 brush in them without picking up the neighbouring colour?
Thanks
PS – I hope your study for midterms is going OK
Yes, you could!
If I could get only one thing from this collection this would be it!
All lovely colors. I already own Plum Foolery and Oh So Fair. Otherwise, I’d totally get this kit. Dame has been on my list for a while. This will be nice for someone who missed out on the VV beauty powder, though.
These all look great on you!
Beautiful!!
You look great. What lipcolor are you wearing? It is soo pretty!!!!
Mellow Mood
Mellow Mood! 🙂
Thanks!!!!!
I think I would buy this if I was looking for a blush. I like palettes and these colours are just right for me.
At $45.50CDN I’m a fool not to get it but I already own a lot of MAC blushes, 2 blush ombres, tippy, Bite of an Apple and Oh So Fair. lol I’m covered for colours.
This will be going on my list for this collection for sure.. <3 Now I will have a little extra Oh So Fair. Will this be released on the 28th as well online?
Nevermind! Totally saw that you put the online release date after I submitted that. >>;
Whar exactly is the distinction of blush vs. beauty powder?
It can be used however you want – it’s just a face powder – but it all depends on the shade and how light/dark you are!
I so want this!! Thank you for the great swatches, as always. ;D
I’ve been thinking about this one. I have True Romantic and Breath of plum. I’ve also heard that Dame lacks in pigment, and I have Pink Swoon, Well dressed already. Do you think this kit is unique enough or are there dupes? Thanks!
I had no problem getting Dame showing up on me. Given that both blushes are permanent, you can always buy them at a later date, so I don’t really know if this is a must-have 🙂
Great, thanks!
Best of luck on your midterms Christine! Thank you so much for putting in the time to do reviews… we really appreciate it!
I’m wondering, how hard do you think would it be to depot these face kits??
No idea – have never tried. It doesn’t look easy to me, but I have never looked to try!
dame is my favourite blush ever!!
Thank you soo much Christine! I have planned on getting this since I don’t have much Mac Blush and this is a pretty easy cost effective way t build up my collection! I was a MAC last thursday..twice in one week..uh oh I’m getting bad hahaha
I think I might have to get this one.. I really like all of the colours, and like you said, like you’re going to ever run out of product even when you are buying smaller amounts!
all the new launches.. and nothing seems to stand out.. it’s all the same colors.. it seems. 🙁
I feel like this is a smart move to get more sales. This might definitely rope in the bunch that just missed Oh So Fair with VV but they’ll be forced to buy the two permanent items with it.
Pretty! I definitely want this!!! Oh So Fair sold out here in NZ in like 3 seconds flat so it’s nice to get another shot at it. I’ve been lemming Plum Foolery for a while too…
Just out of curiosity, what do you have on your lips in the pictures Christine? It’s really rather lovely!
Mellow Mood!
ohhhh, i love! i would have given the package 5/5
Is the Oh So Fair Beauty Powder similar to MAC’s Well Dressed blush?
No, they’re not alike, IMO.
Christine!
Thanks for putting these up- much appreciated. I was wondering how much it would cost in Canada, as the prices are a bit higher.
Also, how light did you apply the blush? I am veryyyy fair, so when looking at swatches and your recommendations, I thought it would be fine. Until I saw you wearing them, I got a bit nervous.
I tried to put enough on that you could clearly see it – probably not as intense as it could go, but I tried not to blend it out too much!
I want this!
wow these are all so pretty! i would love this! but i want to limit myself to just one blush so i’m going to get the hot pink one! (i forget the name) 🙂
Christine, are the blushes and beauty powders in the kit as pigmented as the Mac regular blushes or formula??? I know with the brush kits and the lip kits the product quality goes down. Not sure if that’s the same with the face kits?? Thanks:)
They are the same as their permanent counterparts!
Hi Christine, what lipstick are you wearing in these photos? It’s very nice.
Mellow Mood lipstick.
i am much more attracted to this face kit but am on the fence since i am warm toned though light to medium.
Hi Christine!
Question regarding the packaging. Is the plaid print actual fabric, or is it an enamel?
Great swatches, as always!!!
It’s actual fabric. Feels kind of like felt? maybe. It’s not enamel, though.
Hi Christine,
Thanks for putting up this stuff even though you’re so busy!
Would this kit be okay for NC20 skin with dark hair?
Sure!
This looks beautiful on you! Thanks for the reviews. This kit was not a part of my preorder but I think I am going to rethink it now. Thanks again!
for me this is the one thing i want from this collection
I have pinky undertones deep auburny hair and I am nc15 in studio fix fluid, would you reccomend these colours to me?
this looks so pretty! does it work for light to fair skin tones? also, will you be doing an overall review with must haves & recommendations?
Yes, once I have finished reviewing everything, I will post my recommendations, but since I have not gotten through everything yet, I can’t make any 🙂
I love this face kit. I love all three colors and with me always trying to be an organizational freak with my makeup this will work perfectly for me. Plus I like taking more than one cheek color with me when I go somewhere so this will make it super easy for me to travel. I love the case too. Good thing I ordered it!
BTW all these colors look wonderful on you!
Isn’t the beauty powder in this the colour “Rose”, not “Oh So Fair”? That’s what it says on MAC UK…
There is a photo in this post that shows the back of the palette, and the label says Oh So Fair.
Did you notice how the pictures of the two face kits are swapped on the MAC website? The swatches are right but the pics of the whole kit are wrong.
I had to get this face kit as I just liked everything about right from the get-go. When I went into Mac today, this was the one item where the woman said they were down to only one left. So my haul today was this and 2 eyeshadow palettes …. what a difference from the 27 items I bought from the Venomous collection. By the way, my sales person kept trying to suggest the brush sets to me and I just politely kept declining without going into … well Temptalia (who knows!!) says …. so thank you for that Miss Christine! ;D
Phew, glad you escaped the brush sales pitch, haha! 🙂
Hi Christine, I think your eye makeup here is so pretty, but I’m having trouble finding the tutorial of this under your “looks” section. Do you remember which it is? Thanks!
I purchased this as it seemed a great value and I’d been wanting Dame anyway. I am really disappointed, though – the Dame in this is not the same as the regular blush…I can hardly get any colour from it and had to sort of “rough up” the surface when it was new to enable my brush to pick up any colour. It seemed a good value and I can make it all work but I was disappointed in the quality/colour payoff.
