MAC Tartan Tale Chapter 2: Sassy Neutral Lassies Lipglass Set

This year, MAC has released three different miniature lipglass sets. Each set contains five different shades of lipglass, each containing 0.08 oz. of product. Like the other sets from Chapter 2, they are housed in a metal tin that features the tartan pattern on the outside. They also have a plastic insert to keep the glosses standing up evenly within the tin, but it can be easily removed for more storage. Each set retails for $29.50.

Lipglasses are sheer to opaque in color, but they have a tackier, stickier texture. They are supposed to be vanilla-scented, but I did find a couple throughout the sets that smelled like plastic. These have the same sponge-tipped applicators that full-sized lipglasses have, but it seems less spongy and less gloss is pulled through on each pass (not necessarily a bad thing there!).

This set includes: Bright & Perky (classic bronze), Girls at Play (plummy brown), Scottish Lilt (peachy beige), Spirits A’ Flying (pale gold), and Stealing Kisses (glossing spice).

  • Bright & Perky is a semi-sheer, orange-toned brown with orange-gold shimmer.  It seems rather similar to Ornamental (lipglass).
  • Girls at Play is a semi-sheer darkened red with a heavy hit of gold shimmer. It’s a redder version of Pret-a-Papier (from Pret-a-Papier). It’s also the lipglass version of Baron’s Rose and Fun Bathing lipsticks. I would like it more if it didn’t apply so splotchily.
  • Scottish Lilt is a semi-opaque, milky, pale, fleshy beige. It’s similar to C-Thru, but it lacks the red flecks.
  • Spirits A’ Flying is a sheer milky peach gloss base (very sheer!) with tangerine shimmer. It’s a weaker version of Kumquat (from Spring Colour Forecast).
  • Stealing Kisses is a semi-opaque, creamy muted tangerine-brown with white micro-shimmer. It’s similar to Entice, but it’s more orange.

A normal lipglass contains 0.17 oz. of product and retails for $14.50. In this set, you’ll receive 0.40 oz. worth of lipglass for $29.50. This works out to be $85.29/oz. for an individual [full-sized] lipglass and $73.75/oz. for the lipglass set. It’s also worth pointing out that for the price of two full-sized shades, you’ll have five shades to choose from. If you’re someone who doesn’t stick with one gloss long enough to finish, the sets will be more worthwhile for you.

  • Product: 27/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: The glosses, on the whole, are definitely neutral tones, and they’re even neutral colors.  I’m not really pulled either direction with these, as I think they’ll work for a variety of people, but nothing really jumps out at me either.

i dont like it 🙁 its very heartbreaking that it didn’t come with any lustreglass (lipglass is kinda sticky and splotchy to me). And why is everything so red/orange? this was the only thing i was going to get in the collection, but now since I’m not thrilled i guess I will be saving money. Sad thing is I won’t be able to have the cute packaging lol

Scottish Lilt reminds me of Mouthwatering (from the 08 holiday collection) more than C-thru though.

christine! thank you so much for reviewing these right before i think to buy them 🙂 i’m so glad i saw this, although i’m kinda bummed! why so much orange in the neutrals? lol after saying that i’ll prolly still get them 😛 thank you for the awesome swatches!

I thought I would want the Corals kit over any of them and then I’d maybe pick up the Pinks as well. I didn’t even consider this neutral, but thanks to these posts I’m definitely picking up the Neutrals and I think the Corals kit is the one I like the least. Thanks for taking the time to do these Christine! It really helps me make better buying decisions.

I picked this up today and i’m so glad. All of these colors are perfect for me. I’m brownskinned and these warm, orangey colors are awesome in a way that the coral set would have been to bright and pinkish for my taste.

Girls at Play is a real eyecatcher. I would pretty much like to buy this as a single item. As I’m not interested in any of the other colors I probably won’t get this set.

I COMPLETELY agree with you!
I’m not used to wearing very bold lip colors, but this shade just looks right. I am obsessed with it! I also find that it is flattering for most people.

Definitly will try to hunt down another “Girls At Play”.

I do like the entire set, too.
The one I don’t particularly care for is “Stealing Kisses”. It’s just too odd. It’s not bold, it’s not too neutral. …..and it borders on orangey. Just not flattering on my skin.

I love Spirits A’ Flying, do you know a closer dupe (with less orange than Kumquat 🙂
I also like two others (the first ones) so I guess I’ll be skipping it.
Thank you for the swatches!
