Tabloid Beauty is a “collection” of sorts, but all of the products included in the collection are permanent products. MAC is showcasing some of their products that have some stellar results that are scientifically proven (according to the website). I’m only reviewing and showcasing the Pro Longwears — also included in the launch is Penultimate Eye Liner ($16.50), Plushlash ($13.00), Prep + Prime Line Filler ($19.50), and Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone ($19.50) — all of which I’ve reviewed previously. Tabloid Beauty launches in-store on February 25th!
Though the Pro Longwears are permanent, since I’ve never done lip swatches for the majority before, I thought this was a good excuse to do so. Pro Longwears are one of the longest wearing lip products I’ve ever put on my lips. No, seriously. I could only manage to swatch four or five at a time, because they cling onto lips, which makes removal more grueling than typical lipstick/lipgloss. You’ll need an oil-based makeup remover to get this guy off, and you’ll likely want to blot and smear the oil-based makeup remover around to let it “sink” in and break down the product.
Pro Longwears are really great… once you know how to apply them.
A half hour before you apply, slather on lip balm, then blot off prior to application. I like to apply from the tube using the included doe-foot applicator and start on the bottom lip, smoosh lips together gently, then round out the top lip color. You have to be patient and use a steady hand, because this stuff dries fast and doesn’t budge after it dries, so you need to make sure to stay inside your natural lip line.
Next, let your mouth hang open a bit to dry. I like to wait about a minute to a minute and a half for it dry. After all of that, top with gloss. You’ll need to reapply the gloss every few hours as that part will fade away–the lip color itself stays on pretty well. It will breakdown if you eat really greasy/oily food, but it holds up decently through that, in my experience.
Just for clarity, I purchased 10 of the 16 featured here (six were press samples). I’m actually going to bestow most of these on my Mom as a little surprise gift when I see her next! (She loves PLWs–her favorite is Night Rose!) Also, for reference, if you purchase during the Tabloid Beauty collection is up (and “while supplies last”), they come in specially printed sleeves (they slip around the normal black box packaging).
Pro Longwear Lipcolour ($21.00)
- Durashell is a milky pink with a golden, frosty sheen. Application with Durashell wasn’t as smooth or even as the other shades–it has a tendency to emphasize every flaw on your lips and can look a little streaky since it’s not quite as opaque as the other shades as well.
- Clingpeach is a peach shimmered coral. This is one of my favorites, because it applies evenly and is totally opaque.
- Unchanging is a pinky-nude with icy pink shimmer that looks pretty creamy once applied.
- For Keeps is a reddened berry with multicolored shimmer. It has full color coverage and doesn’t settle into lip lines as much as some of the other shades.
- Loyal is a milky-looking browned nude with no real shimmer. It looks creamier once you apply the gloss on top.
- Stuck on You is a beautiful shade of berry-red with a gilded gold sheen. This one is such a stunning shade–you have to check it out in person to really see how it glows.
- Passion Preserved is a brownish red with a little plum thrown in. It has a very creamy, opaque look when applied.
- Lasting Lust is a retina-burning creamy red. It’s almost a neutral red, but it seems to lean orange-red just a smidgen. Super bright, opaque, and lush. This is a show-stopping red for sure. (Though, to be honest, Perpetuate is/was my favorite red PLW.)
- Perennial Rose is a subdued, rosy red with golden shimmer. This has a shimmer, frost feel in the finish, but it still goes on opaque.
- Commitment is a reddened brown with gold shimmer. It’s a very intense, bold shade when worn. It’s dark, vampy, and dare I say it? sultry!

i want unchanging, for keeps , stuck on your and perennial rose! never tried these before, i only tried the drugstore revlon brand years and years ago. didnt like those though. i hope these are cooler!
Once you work with ’em and find the right application method, they’re really great when you *don’t* want to fuss with your lip color!
Your swatches are always so lovely and helpful….I keep adding to my list of products to buy. For some reason I’m not really a big fan of this collection..the colors just don’t do it for me. =(

There are a lot of “blah” ones for me here, but there are a couple I didn’t know were so fun!
clingpeach looks like santal by chanel. loyal looks like cherish by mac. some of these look like shades mac already makes in lipstick form (passion preserved = spirit, maybe?). several of these colors are real pretty on your lips but i think i will pass. i don’t care for the look and feel of goopy glosses, especially by mac…but i have to admit the lipcolor shades are tempting.
i take that back…these lipcolors are substantially more pigmented than the shades i just compared them to.
Holy craaaaaaaap Lasting Lust is INSANE. Shame it’s a PLW though, I avoid those like the plague 🙁
Darn! For some reason, I thought these were actually a reformulation, I’m bummed to find out they’re the same product that’s been in the line. I actually tested 5-6 different ‘longwear’ formulas, including this one. With just a few tiny exceptions, they all performed pretty much the same. To me, MAC’s doesn’t justify the price tag. 🙁
Which formulas did you test?
I haven’t really tested many others, since I’ve always had far more PLWs than I actually wear, LOL. I do, though, really like that you can re-purchase the gloss part as you need it (I always find you go through the gloss much, much faster than the color itself). IIRC, though, the amount you get in the MAC ones is often double the amount you get in drugstore ones, so it ends up being a wash in terms of value.
I tried MAC’s along w/ CoverGirl Outlast, Revlon Colorstay Overtime & the newer Ultimate formula, Maybelline Superstay, and Loreal Infallible. It’s actually surprising how few prestige lines do this type of lip color any more.
And, you’re absolutely right, the MAC formula is basically twice the size of the other brands- I usually don’t figure out the price comparison until I’m writing the final draft for my review so I hadn’t noticed that! That will definitely give MAC some extra points!
I think I have a problem with paying $10-14 for a drugstore lip product. It’s like insanity to me… which is why I’ve only tried a few of them and since they weren’t my cup of tea, haha, I was like, “I’ll stick with MAC.”
But I really, really LOVE being able to replace the gloss part 😉
I know what you mean about drugstore prices- seems like they just keep going up & up! I usually wait until there’s a buy one get one to try drugstore lines, that way I’m not out too much if it’s horrible.
Also, I’d have to research, but I believe some of the mass-market brands do give the option of buying the gloss/topcoat seperately, but I don’t remember which. Actually, Victoria’s Secret’s old (& unfortunately, discontinued) ‘longwear’ came with a clear top coat, and not only could you purchase refills of that, but they also made pearl finish, sheer gold, and pink pearl topcoats, all sold seperately, so you could essentially change the shade of your longwear. It was brilliant & I never understood why more companies don’t do that!
Yeah, the good thing about drugstore brands is that you know they’ll go on sale eventually (or hopefully…), so you can snag it on sale. I swear, whenever I’m finally in a drugstore or whatever, nothing is on sale, and I’m like, “$14? Are you OUT YA MIND?” I know it’s totally irrational, since I’ll pay $30+ for a lipstick from high end, but I won’t even go near a $10 lipstick if it’s from a drugstore brand.
I wish MAC would do a third top coat – like a warmer shimmer, maybe a champagne shimmer. The shimmer top coat is a little cool for my liking, almost like it tints blue, I swear!

Although, I think Stuck On You PLW is a pretty good dupe for Rose Maiden Lipstick.
I love PLWs. But my mom bought Durashell and gave it to me. And I can see why she got rid of it. I have no clue what to do with it. Its so streaky and unwearable. Seems like it would look decent when sheered out, y’know for a little golden glow, but the formula drys too quickly for that. What a waste.
But I think I need Lasting Lust. Its so gorgeous. I just wish there were more bright colors in the collection.
Maybe try Durashell over a regular pinky lipstick or mix it with another PLW (which is possible as long as you work QUICK!).

LOL, I couldn’t – I had to spread it out over three days! I could only do around 4 or 5 per sitting, because the removal process plumped up my lips wayyy too much after three or four, haha.

I don’t use a lip brushes for lip swatches! I just apply straight from the tube 🙂
I love longlasting lipcolours, I always wear them if I go out for a meal or for an occasion when I can’t keep reapplying my lipstick/lipgloss. I usually use Max Factor Lipfinity (the best I’ve come across so far), No 7 and Maybelline, plus I think I have a couple of Revlon ones, but they’re not great. I’ve never tried Mac’s longlasting lipcolours, so it’s great to see them all swatched, thanks! My favourites are Clingpeach, For Keeps, Stuck On You and Perennial Rose.
I have a slew of these and the lustres – these were the first MAC items I purchased. They literally stay on until you use a good makeup remover to take them off. The great aspect (other than wear-time) is that you can mix colors as long as you do it quickly while they’re still very wet. The bad part – they are EXTREMELY drying to your lips.
I have three shades, Fully charged, Perennial Rose and Lover’s Lust. I just find them so uncomfortable.. They are drying, if you don’t apply the gloss and if you eat oily food.. eekk. Half of them disappear and it is so hard to fix them.
How long do they last on you granted you don’t eat the greay/oily food and reapply the gloss often? I’m out of my house from 8:00 until 10:30 most nights with work and school so would it start to fade or look out around those later hours. I know it’s a super long time!
At least 8 hours, but when I wear these, it’s typically for an all-day event (like a day trip) and it’s on me til I get home, which is usually around 12 hours.
Thanks so on my super long 14.5 hour days I shouldn’t use this, haha. I’d probably forget to reapply the gloss anyhow in between student teaching, commuting, and classes.

Has the formula for MAC longwears improved over the years? I have one from many years back and it tends to be very drying.
I swear it improved like 3 or 4 years ago, but I can’t remember.
They are drying, though – they aren’t at all moisturizing. I find that if I do intensive moisturization *before* application, then I don’t have a problem with it really being drying (also, so long as I reapply the gloss).

I may have to try this out – I am in love with Cling Peach and For Keeps – Stuck on You is also pretty. But I’m wondering how this is going to feel on my super sensitive lips…
If you have dry lips, these are tough to use, but I’ve always just experienced trouble with making sure my lips are well moisturized before applying these. The formula itself is very thin and pigmented, kind of like a liquid lipstick, which then dries.

I have always been on the fence about buying these because I could never find a good swatch online and I always feel a little weird about trying lipsticks at the store (cooties freak me out). I visit your site everyday (2,3,4 times a day even) and always look forward to your reviews.

I love MAC’s thematic naming schemes. They are so clever and make me so happy. My favorite one before had been the Matte2’s writing-related names, but now that I’m paying attention I think I like these better, because they’re so relevant to the product. I’m not in love with the formula – I only have one from the Lustre Twins collection that I picked up at a CCO and I just find perfect application to be daunting, plus yeah, the drying thing is a drag. But some of these, like Clingpeach, For Keeps, and Perennial Rose are such nice wearable colors. Maybe someday they’ll be worth a try for me.

I want Durashell, Clingpeach, Loyal and Stuck On You. In the past I’ve had a terrible experience with the Maybelline Superstay products, it was impossible to reapply the product after it faded since it would crease/bunch up/look nasty and it was almost impossible to remove. In terms of removing the product, is it difficult?
If you actually wear it for hours, removal isn’t too bad – just gotta use one that is oil-based.
Is this collection just online and @ freestanding stores or is it at dept store counters and ALL stores?

Lasting Lust is very sexy and since red lipstick is SO hard to keep on your lips, this color is a perfect candidate for a Longwear formula. Perfect for smokers, lip wrinkles, etc. LOL

Which do you think is a bit more pale Loyal or Lishious?
(Is just that I put the pictures side by side and I don’t see much of a difference except for the shimmers in Lishious) my other question is about the pigmentation of the lustre lipcolor in pro longwear, does that mean is a bit more sheer? Is just that I haven’t tried this and I want to make sure I am making the correct choice.

Lustre lipcolor just comes with a glittery/shimmery top coat as opposed to just a clear gloss coat. That’s really the biggest difference — definitely not sheerer!
I recently bought Stuck on You and it is a really pretty color but it’s a lot darker on me than I thought it would be. Any suggestions on what I could do to lighten it up? I don’t want to look vampy, you know? I’m asian with medium skin with a slight tan (live in Hawaii).
Wear it sheerer – like blot or just don’t use as much product – or use a lighter gloss (like a nude) on top 🙂
I have Passion Preserved but it appears a little dark (brown) on my lips – not as nice as your swatch but it’s really long last for hours and I don’t need to reapply (never remember to do so).
