MAC Sweetly Smoky Crushed Metallic Pigments Set
Pink and Purples Abound in This Set
MAC Sweetly Smoky Crushed Metallic Pigments Set ($32.50 for 0.40 oz.) consists of four shades: Maribu (lilac frost), Prettified (mauvey frost), Femininity (cool pink frost), and Dusty Desire (rich purple frost).
Maribu is a pale, soft pink with a frosted, metallic finish. The color payoff is decent, and it is the same both wet and dry. MAC Ready to Party is cooler-toned. Dior Fairy Golds is similar but warmer. MAC Invisible Light is warmer. MAC Young Venus is a touch cooler-toned.
Prettified is a barely mauve-tinged, medium brown with subtle burgundy tones. It has a very, very metallic finish and chunky sparkle. Applied dry, there was very little color, but it did pop a lot more when applied damp. Bare Escentuals Most Requested is similar to the base color but is mostly matte. MAC Supersweet is similar but a bit darker, less metallic.
Femininity is a vibrant fuchsia magenta with an iridescent purple shimmer-sheen. It is a bit sheer when used dry, but it comes together better when applied damp. Urban Decay Infamous is pinker and doesn’t have the iridescence. Wet ‘n ‘Wild Shimmer the Night Away is similar with a subtler sheen. Urban Decay Fishnet is less metallic. MAC Stars ‘n Rockets is very similar. MAC Aurora is less brown and metallic but similar.
Dusty Desire is a rich, dark purple with a subtle cool undertone. It was smoother than the other three shades, so it was more forgiving on the lids. It had good color payoff dry, but it had excellent pigmentation when applied damp. MAC Drawn to Drama is darker. L’Oreal Perpetual Purple has a stronger red undertone. Urban Decay Psychedelic Sister also has a stronger red undertone.
Prettified is really hard to work with, and I had problems with fall out during wear, even when I used it wet. Dusty Desire was the easiest to use and smooth out. Maribu and Femininity are somewhere in-between; noticeably chunky and need a fair amount of smoothing to be manageable, but they didn’t have fall out problems like Prettified. You can see how it really accentuates the texture on my lids when I wore this set for testing, unfortunately! I find this product tends to work best when paired with mattes and satins; use one or two as your focal point, then build around it with less metallic and frosted textures.

I wish Dusty Desire was available individually – it’s gorgeous.
If I saw these I’d probably avoid them, until seeing these swatches (and your eye look) these look lovely…normally I shy away from colour but these are gorgeous!
Oh my goodness, the eye look you did with this is STUNNING!
Also, Christine, I ordered a fifteen pan palette from MAC a few days ago, and I’ve been checking the tracking ever since – last night it said it was delivered at 10:32 and left at dock, signed by SOF. I know it probably is useless to ask you but the item wasn’t at my house, and I THINK that dock means the UPS place, but it’s still extremely confusing that it says delivered. If it doesn’t ever get delivered, should I contact MAC or UPS? I assume UPS would be the one to contact here, but you never know I guess. I’m just kind of halfheartedly wondering if MAC could do anything if it doesn’t ever come. Sorry if that didn’t even make sense, hah. I’m just extremely worried that I’m going to be out $200. 🙁 Thank you!
I would call MAC/UPS, as I don’t know what that term means, sorry!
Depending on where you live, it could be delayed due to issues either directly or indirectly related to the big storm. I would give UPS a call and ask them if there are any weather related or general delays, or possibilities of such. Also, the few times I ordered from MAC, UPS had me sign, so if it doesn’t come, there should be no signature, and I’m sure MAC will honor your order. HTH
UPS is on twitter and has representatives answering your questions immediately. You should try contacting them!
I always have problems with their deliveries, but their twitter team is very nice and helpful.
So pretty! Thanks for reviewing this. =)
Even though you had issues with some of the shades, your eye looks absolutely stunning in the makeup. I would buy it just for the look you created!
Ugh, the chunkiness is so… icky. Pretty colors, though.
Dusty Desire is really the only shade in this quad I’m really drawn to, but MAC Push The Edge & UD Frigid both seem similar enough to pass on this.
How does Femininity compare to MAC pink pearl pigment? I just bought that last month, but I am attracted to this set overall and want an excuse to pass on it.
Pink Pearl is similar – I wouldn’t get this if you have that.
I loooove crushed metallic pigments. Yes, they are chunkier and harder to work with than other pigments or eye shadows but I love the effect they give. All that aside, this particular set of colours is sooooo pretty on you Christine. They really bring out the colour of your eyes. Gorgeous!
Gorgeous! I adore how you’ve combined these colors!
I seriously want all of these sets 😀 Which one is your favorite?
I don’t really like the Crushed Metallic Pigments, so none of them are favorites!
Dusty desire is the prettiest shade here, they look gorgeous on you! But I think I’ll pass, too frosty for me and too much work :p
I was so expect to holiday pigments set. but little disappointing….
Holiday Crushed Metallic Pigments Set seems like before Vera collection’s Crushed Metallic Pigments Set. Especially cool and smoky. Could you comparison vera vs holiday ?
I compared to relevant shades if they were similar in the post! 🙂
Your eye look is absolutely stunning, Christine! Gorgeous. I have a question, would you mind sharing which brushes you used to get that look? Many thanks!
I used the 239 for everything!
LOVING the colours! Especially on you Christine! They really make your eyes pop! The texture however, looks awful…this will be one to see in person I think and decide then, though, once again with MAC, I won’t be running there.
Love your blog! I was checking out the Crushed MAC Metallic Pigment Set in Sweetly Smoky and noticed that Femininity looks very much like an older MAC pigment: All Girl. What do you think? Keep up the amazing job.
Cheers!
Jen
It’s closer to Pink Pearl – All Girl is really pink, I don’t remember it having a duochrome! 🙂
I just ordered this tonight along with the pink lip gloss set, mainly for the cut packaging. The thing is…I have never used crushed pigments before. How do you get chunkiness on your eyelids? Do you just bang it out with you brush and crush them more before applying? Sorry to sound so ignorant but….I am!! Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Femininity is the best color ever…
I am in love with Prettified, but hate all that fall out. Do you know where I can find something extremely similar to Prettified??? Love everything, except the fallout.
I listed all the dupes I could think of in the post!
Oh and by the way, I really like how you applied the colors. Can you please tell me the process of how you applied them. Thank you!!!
I used them damp + 239 brush!
