MAC Technakohl Liners
MAC Technakohl Liners ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) are supposed to have a “soft and creamy” formula with “intense, rich colour deposit” while being long-wearing (specified as eight hours) and smudge-proof. This is the last of the reviews for the new shades, and we don’t end on a very happy note; there are better eyeliner formulas on the marketplace, both more, less, or equally expensive and accessible. MAC created some more unusual colors, but I found the formula to be lacking in color payoff, longevity, and texture.
MAC Sterling Silver Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “silver.” It’s a bright, metallic silver. It had semi-sheer pigmentation in a single stroke, and it didn’t build up color from there. This shade had a waxy consistency, and it lasted for six and a half hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Counterfeit Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “silver grey.” It’s a medium-dark gray with warm undertones–almost looks like a silvery taupe–with a pearly sheen. It had semi-sheer pigmentation in a single pass, which was somewhat buildable to semi-opaque coverage, though it didn’t apply evenly. This color wore well for seven hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Clay Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “deep grey.” It’s a dark warm gray with a pearly sheen. It had a drier, waxier consistency that made it hard to get good color payoff out of it in a single stroke, but it seemed to be more buildable compared to many of the other shades, as after a few layers, I was able to get opaque color. This shade started to look blown out after six and a half hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Steelpoint Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “deep smoky metallic grey.” It’s a dark gray with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation in one pass, which was fairly buildable to opaque color. The consistency wasn’t too waxy, and the color wore well for seven hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Superfly Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “soft black.” It’s a rich black (not a soft black at all, actually) with a satin finish. It had a waxy feel to it, but it was buildable to opaque color after two layers. The eyeliner looked softened and smudged after six hours, though. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Ah, bummer .. as I’ve been really liking darker gray liners as a sub for black.
Monica
There was such potential 🙁
Wow, following the reviews for this line has been like watching a slow-motion train wreck. Each batch is even worse than the one before! What a disappointing line of liners
I hear ya! 🙁
I’m beyond grateful for Marc Jacobs Beauty. This… Just, no. I hope these were free and didn’t hurt your eyes upon application, if possible to apply… 😀
They’re just waxy, so they don’t really tug or feel sharp, but they’re not the most comfortable to apply.
Hmm…
What a bummer, the whole line! I know there’s one or two okay ones in there… but… major turn off.
Yeah, a lot of them are misses! Even the “not misses” aren’t exactly hits.
Why MAC, why? 27 shades and it looks like 20 of them are duds
Even the better shades aren’t the best 🙁
I’m so disappointed in these. Some of the shades I wanted to love (Sourpuss, Steelpoint and Superfly in particular) and it just seems like these are lacking all together. I wish I could get a little more excited about this release, but sadly, I’m not.
It was a really disappointing launch!
I can’t understand why MAC released these knowing what poor quality they are. When the promo pics came out I was trying to narrow down what I wanted to three and now I’m passing on all of them.
I have no idea where they’re getting intense or vivid color out of these!
*sigh*
🙁
What a shame… I love metallic liners 🙁
Me too!
Ditto on both counts 🙁
why whyyyy! are they all so bad?! even the black!!
sigh. my wallet doesn’t mind though.
I wish I knew!
The colors in this line are so pretty. The swatches make me so sad. 🙁 How could MAC mess up eyeliner this much?
I have no idea!
LOL, I would have raged so hard if they’d *totally* stuffed up the black one! As it is it’s still disappointing though. Seriously!! :-/
LOL!
Wow, looks like this whole line should just be called pitiful as a whole. I’m not sure how most of these passed MAC’s quality control!
Oh dear – poor MAC. Those silver and greys could have been so good…
Ya see Christine? This is why I couldn’t’ be a good blogger like you because I’d have given up reviewing this lot after the first batch and chucked ’em in the bin!! Well done for being so diligent and persevering !
What a Big. Fat. Disappointment they were.
It was getting wearing after I got halfway through and they still weren’t picking up, LOL! I was like, “NOOOOOO!”
It sucks that these were so disappointing, but I love to see negative reviews here. I trust that you’re as discriminating as I am, so the positive reviews are something to celebrate!
It shows integrity. One of my favorite things about this site.
Thank you, Amy! 🙂 The bad reviews help balance everything out – not everything is GREAT! and it’s good for comparison of what is good and what is horrible!
MAC gets to go sit in the time out corner next to Bare Minerals. If you can’t make the formula work splendidly in black, you probably shouldn’t market the eyeliner.
Meanwhile, on a crazy whim, I bought a couple of automatics from Avon at $3 a pop–the blackened purple eyeliner goes on smooth, lasts ages, and the clear lipliner is about as smooth as UD’s Ozone, without the annoying need for sharpening. If Avon can manage this…any company should be able to.
They can go fight over who puts out the worst eyeliner, though these were less painful to use than the bareMinerals’ ones. Small favors.
