MAC Shy Girl Lipstick

MAC Shy Girl Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “creamy neutral coral beige” and has a Cremesheen finish. It’s a soft beige peach with a hint of pink. I’d say it’s coral in the very vaguest kind of way. It’s not really peach, nor is it beige, so coral may be the easiest way to describe it, but it doesn’t have quite enough pink in it for it to be a real coral-like shade. There is a soft white shimmer and reflective sheen to the finish.  It’s one of MAC’s top-selling shades, and I can see why; the color isn’t too warm, so it should easily flatter a range of skin tones. MAC Gotta Dash is brighter, lighter. YSL Tender Peach is more opaque and peachier, while YSL Peach Passion is pinker and more opaque. Illamasqua Brink is brighter, more orange. MAC Fashion City is more orange.

The Cremesheen finish is supposed to yield full color coverage with a “soft and supple shine.”  The color coverage is mostly opaque, though you can see a hint of my lip freckle peeking through.  It applies evenly and fairly easily, though I find Cremesheens to be drier than they are creamy.  I wouldn’t describe the texture as dry, but it does catch occasionally on the lip when I pull the angled tip across.  There are a lot of shades with this finish that I think are gorgeous, but this finish is noticeably drying on my lips–not the worst and certainly not like a really dry matte finish, but it is drying.  My lips always feel worse-for-the-wear after wearing one.  Shy Girl wears three and half hours on me.  MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented.

This looks gorgeous on you, Christine. I don’t think my really pigmented lips could pull it off though – I wish it would look like this on me! Love nudes. One of the best looking nudes on my lips is MAC Sheen Supreme in Supremely Confident, and that’s an extremely pale looking colour in the tube! Damn you, pigmentation.

I went to pick this one up based on all the good things I’ve heard. Once I saw it in person I knew it was completely to orange for me. I am very fair and it looks so close to nude lips with a touch of orange. I was very dissapointed 🙁 I did get Lustering instead!

Hi Christine,
thank you for your review! I would like to buy some MAC lipsticks those days but I haven’t the chance to swatch them, I can only get them online.

My skintone has a pink undertone (cold?), I’m blonde with sky-blue eyes. I use mineralize skinfinish natural in Medium!

Do you think Shy Girl, Watch me simmer and MAC Ravishing could suit my colours?

Thank you in advance!

grrrrr,,,Chrisitine im sooo jealous u can carry off soo many shades beautifully…i love this look its so natural…what shade like this would suit darker skin tone say nw35?

I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for this one. The makeup artist at MAC who did my wedding makeup mixed this one with Brave to make a beautiful lip colour. <3

This lipstick has been on my wish list for some time now, but after seeing your swatches I know that it’s way too warm for me. Money saved 🙂

I love this color, I had it but last summer it melted in my purse, but since I still have marquise’d and they are almost identical, I will wait until I finish it before I get another shy girl.
This color looks so natural on you Christine.

I find a lot of formula drying but MAC Cremesheen is my favorite formula from them. I’m a tad disappointing I haven’t seen to many LE shade this year in that formula. Ever Hip again need to be permanent and I’ll say it everywhere I can. lol I’ll give this shade a shot in store.

Gina Avatar

Thank you so, so much for reviewing this Christine! With all the LE collections MAC does, it can be really hard to find quality pictures and swatches of their permanent products (which is where I think MAC really shines!)

I’ve purchased Shy Girl in the past–and absolutely hated it!! I’m an NW25 and the shade did nothing for me. Right now, for a bright corally pink, the Viva glam Nicki lipstick is pretty fantastic.❤

I have this and I’m NC 35. I sometimes look washed out with this shade. I don’t know if it’s because it’s too close to my skin color or it’s tad bit too cool. But it looks good on you.

Devi Avatar

I wish I could pull this off. I have really pigmented berry colored lips (the bottom lip at least) and so a color like this would still end up looking pink on me, as opposed to the beautiful peach that it looks like on your lips.

I absolutely love this color, but the cremesheen formula sucks. Sadly, it doesn’t work for me. It’s not so much that it’s somewhat dry -as opposed to creamy-, but the fact that it applies unevenly on my lips and makes a horrible gooey line exactly were the product comes into contact with the moist inner part of my lips. So, I have to be very careful when applying it not to go too far inside -that is, avoid applying it where both lips touch when my mouth is closed. This doesn’t happen to me with any other lipstick, only cremesheens.

I love this colour on you! Like other posters have said, my lips are pretty pigmented and I don’t think it’ll work for me. The search continues :(. I have MAC Jubilee and it’s okay, but I still have issues with it.

Líria Avatar

so I’m not the only one: this does apply unevenly. I’m over the cremesheen finish. You do the best lip swatches I’ve ever seen and still, it looks kinda patchy and on me, it settles into fine lines like crazy.
I don’t get why this finish gets so much love: it’s not pretty on the lips and like you, I don’t find it moisturizing at all!

Maddy Avatar

It’s a shame you aren’t too fond of this lipstick 🙁 Shy Girl may be my favorite MAC lipstick. My lips are super pigmented, and it actually is pretty opaque. The color is perfect and I love the Cremesheen formula.

Angelina Diaz Avatar

Shy Girl is the nudest lipstick color I’ll wear. I have to wear it with Spice lipliner though (I’m NC 25 or C3). Usually I’ll pull this lipstick out if I’m wearing heavy eyemakeup.

Shelby Songy Avatar

I always read your comments about the cremesheen being too dry for you but this hasn’t been my experience. Maybe I drool or something 🙂 but it is my favorite line by them. And this color is the only orange I can wear. I’m pretty fair and have a hard time with oranges and corals but I love them in the cases so much.
My favorite way to wear it is to do my eyes up in mad blues that are very dramatic and then this color is so neutral on me that it lets my eyes do all the talking. Just one of my favorite colors out there!

Magdalena Avatar

i have this lipstick, and i rarely use it – it applies super unevenly and patchy, i need to put a gloss over it so it looks acceptable. boo.

Kayla Avatar

I’m wondering if this color would work for me.

I have NW25 – NW30 skin, light brown eyes, but VERY small lips. I have never found a color that looks right. Very bold colors accentuate the fact that my lips are small, and nude/light colors make my lips disappear.

I want to find a color that works, am tired of wearing only chapstick!

Crystal Nichole Estrada Avatar

I have this and I love it! When it comes to lipstick, I don’t follow silly rules, I wear what I love! Anyone can pull off the lipstick they love, as long as they have confidence! 🙂

mshellokitty0102 Avatar

do you think it can be nice on a dark blonde, green eyes girl? Im not sure if this ”orange” color will be nice on me.. 🙂
Thanks and I love your blog.

nanydoll90 Avatar

shy girl is awesome 1 of my favorite ! lovely, it looks too orange in the pic but is not, i’ve black hair, brown eyes and light skin and it works wonders

lulu Avatar

hi christine!
it’s me, AGAIN! i was wondering if shy girl would be a good everyday lipstick (or at least look good) for someone with black hair, asian skin and pink (pretty pigmented) lips? if this isnt ‘the one’, then which of them cremesheens do u think would look best? thank you!

Dominique Avatar

I wanted to know do you think coral bliss and shy girl almost the same shade? I have shy girl and wanted to purchase coral bliss, but I’m hesitant on rather or not they look too much alike?
