MAC Peacocky: Mega Metal Eyeshadows Review, Photos, Swatches, Part 3

MAC Mega Metal Eyeshadow ($19.50 for 0.11 oz.) are a new long-wearing metallic powder with an intense metallic finish with medium-buildable coverage that is not supposed to fade or crease. This post features these five shades: Sex-pectations (metallic burgundy), Spectacle of Yourself (deep bronze), Top of the Posh (frosted white pink), Tweet Me (gold bronze), and Unflappable (frosted black with purple pearl).

  • Sex-pectations is a rich berry red with soft pink-red metallic sheen. It seems rather similar to Cranberry (permanent)–possibly less burgundy, but we’ll have to see in a comparison.
  • Spectacle of Yourself is a rich, molten chocolate bronze with a coppery shimmer-sheen. It’s warmer than Centre Stage. This seems like it may be similar to Twinks (permanent).
  • Top of the Posh is a soft pink with a white gold shimmer-sheen and metallic finish.
  • Tweet Me is a peachy melon with peach-gold metallic sheen. It looks a lot like Melon pigment to me. It’s totally a Temptalia-color, but I know I’ve seen this before.
  • Unflappable is a plummy-gray-taupe with soft metallic shimmer-sheen. A bit like Satin Taupe, but I think the plum differentiates it some.

Buttery, smooth as silk, blendable beyond belief, and richly pigmented, the new Mega Metal Eyeshadows are easily one of the best new products I’ve seen MAC put out in the past year (if not longer). The best part about these is the consistency across the fifteen–they all have the same creamy, silky texture and solid pigmentation across the board. Though the color range is not necessarily the most unique, the formula is fantastic, which makes the quality top notch. I wouldn’t necessarily run out and buy duplicate shades, but every shade is worth checking out. I feel like it’s been too long since I’ve said that about a MAC product.

These are over double the size of regular MAC eyeshadows ($14.50 for 0.05 oz.) and are the same size as Cream Colour Bases (in shape/packaging), and the texture is richer, almost thicker in a way, than veluxe pearl finish shadows. They have some of the intensity and the pearly finish of Starflash shadows, but they stand out on their own, too.

P.S. — I have also used these wet (“foiled”) and have not noticed any wet spot left behind, but it’s only been a few hours–so I’ll get back to you on that!

MAC Peacocky launches on January 6th, 2011 in-stores across North America, January 2011 for international. The approximate launch date for online is January 4th but may not be exact. It features 15 Mega Metal Eyeshadows ($19.50 each) and 12 Kissable Lipcolours ($18.00 each). All products are limited edition.

  • Value: 10/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5

FINAL THOUGHTS: Slightly subdued, these shades are as wearable for color-fiends and more neutral fans. There are shades that are sure to appeal to everyone, but the power of these lies in the quality–smooth, buttery textures combined with intense pigmentation, effortless to blend, and cohesive application.

Holy Canoli! All 6 of these will be MINE!!!! 🙂 I especially love Tweet Me. It looks a bit like expensive pink, which is one of my favorites. Thanks so much Christine for all your hard work this year for us MAC addicts – Happy New Year – Cheers to you!!!!

Nadia Avatar

I was thinking the same thing! it definitely looks like expensive pink! i really hope they make this part of their permenant line so i don’t have to purchase it all at once

I wait Unflappable for so long. I love black e/s & I loooovvveee purple e/s. But now after I saw the swatch, I was like “Errr…, really???”
It’s not that black. I want black w/ purple shimmer, this is brownish plum w/ maroon shimmer to me. Nooo… 🙁
It’s odd, since Noir Plum is not even plum but grape-purple.
Well, I’ve cut my wishlist into: Center Stage, Noir Plum & Odalisque.

Wauw. I am really impressed. When I saw the press photo’s on lushiousbeauty (dutchblogger who used your press photo’s) I wasn’t exithed by the collors, but now when I saw all the swatches on your blog of the peacocky collection and kissable collors I made up my mind! Great collection!I’m making a wishlish now! LOL Thanks for the great photo’s! (As allways! 😉 )

have you noticed any fall out with these? I love them…tweet me, center stage, odalisque, top of the posh… i could go on. I am wondering if, like starflash, they have heavy fall out. Thank you Christine! i love this site!!!!!!!!!!!!!

califabulous Avatar

hmmmm. ok then. grand entrance gave me the blues with fall out. I’m somewhat of a application novice so maybe that’s why. thanks for your reply. I have decided that center stage, odalisque, and tweet me are my must haves! bordering on the dandizette, dalliance….!

Cindy Avatar

Thanks Christine for all the swatches! Might pick up Dalliance and Dandizette, but I’m not as into these shadows as I thought I would be. They look very pretty though. I think I’m more interested in the glosses than the shadows – thought it would be the other way around!

Wow, I really expected this collection to be right up my alley, but, surprisingly, none of the colors grab me so much that I have to have them. Like you said, the colors aren’t the most unique. I think I’m happy enough with my humungo Urban Decay collection that I won’t be springing for these. I might have picked up one or two, but I’m so anal-retentive that I don’t want one super-big eyeshadow sticking out like a sore thumb in my collection. Thank you, Christine for the gorgeous swatches, though. Your site always has the best pictures!

Jessica Avatar

Wow! Some amazing looking colours. Is the mega metal finish another name for starflash though? I bought 6 of those shadows when the collection came out the other year but sadly I never use them.

Paintedlady79 Avatar

Christine,

Do you think that Sex-pectations would be very similar to the red shadow in “Danger Zone” mineralized trio they had back in the Red She Said collection?? I’m dying to find that red again! I loved it so much, I regret not buying more than one at the time and now I”m all out 🙁

bella Avatar

just saw the melon pigment reference, which I think is very shiny, metallic-y, would this be better as a blush for pale skin or are they very similar in texture also?

thanks for lovely swatches to look at on an otherwise pretty boring new years day 😀

Trish Avatar

This is what I thought when I saw these two. I already have Melon and Cranberry. *sigh* I want Noir Plum but Satellite Dreams looks so close and I’m trying to complete another pro-palette with Veluxe Pearl shades. Looks like another collection where my stash trumps the need for something new.

Lee Avatar

Hi Christine…
Do you think that the texture and the pigmentation of this mega metal eyeshadow is similar to Urban decay duluxe eyeshadow?

Thanks for the lovely swatches and review
You are the best 🙂

This is one of the only, and definitely the biggest, collection of eye shadows that not only have I liked every color, but would want try wearing every color. Usually, I look at colors, usually blues, and think “oh, that’s pretty, but I could never pull it off, so I won’t even try them.” These make me want try wearing them… even the blues.

LE I know, but is there any chance they might make these permanent someday? I mean, I can’t afford them, or the dupes really, but it’s be nice to know I might have a chance to get some of them eventually with out selling my first born (or in my case, my cat). 😀

Miss Manderley Avatar

I know that these are alot bigger than the regular ones, but is the diameter of the pans the same? I kind of hate having my MAC e/s in singles and actually depot them to organize into palettes. Just curious if these are depottable?

Nic Avatar

Hey Christine,
Would you be able to tell me how similar Unflappable is to Moth Brown? I love colors like these, but I’m trying to be a little more frugal, so I don’t want to get it if it’s extremely close to something I already have.

ak Avatar

Yeah as I said on the other Peacocky eye shadow post, all of this just came to the UK on February 3rd. Sadly the MAC counter I went to didn’t put the tester of Spectacle of Yourself out, and I didn’t trouble them for it like an idiot so I bought Centre Stage instead. BUT I also bought Unflappable which I knew that I’d love after seeing it on here.

Unflappable is one of those gorgeous interesting colors that MAC used to be well known for.It has a bit of shimmer and a bit of purple just enough to not make it another boring basic black for a smokey eye. Love it!

Sex-pectations let me down though and I really was ready to buy it, but I didn’t though 🙁 It looks red enough on you Christine but on me it looks like a frosty warm, dark pink, but it’s definitelly a pink on me. No thanks. I wanted a red shadow because it’s supposed to be interesting and different, and a magazine said the most everyday, realistic, non-runway way to wear red eye shadow is to wear a frosty one I guess because it looks a bit softer.

ak Avatar

Oh yes and Unflappable looks way better than Satin Taupe that unlike a lot of other people I don’t like really. Satin Taupe on me appears a bit too silvery for my liking and not taupe enough. I have Satin Taupe in one of those Smoke Signals shadow quads from the Smoke Signals collection from four years ago (?)

I went to the CCO at Tanger Outlets for the first time today and found these eyeshadows! They only had two, Tweet Me and Peek at You. I wasn’t too interested in the latter, but Tweet Me is GORGEOUS! So glad I got it! The texture is amazing as well!
