MAC A Novel Romance Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC A Novel Romance Eyeshadow Quad
MAC A Novel Romance Eyeshadow Quad ($40.00 for 0.19 oz.) is a mix of cool neutrals ranging from a green-gold to a dark brown. This quad was more consistent in quality across the board with most shades being decent to good. For those who often find warmer-toned neutrals to be difficult to work with, you may enjoy these murkier, more subdued ones. It will launch with the rest of the collection on August 14th online, August 21st in-stores.
My Fantasy is described as a “pale neutral olive [with a Veluxe Pearl finish].” It’s a light-medium, green-tinged gold with a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation that applied smoothly and evenly. The color wore well for eight hours before fading slightly. bareMinerals Golden Coast (LE) is darker, warmer. MAC Rose Blend #3 (LE) is similar. MAC Golden Hours #3 (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Tarina Tarantino Secret Pond (LE) is darker. Chanel Convoitise (90) (LE, $36.00) is a cream product, lighter. Urban Decay Blitz (LE, $18.00) is darker. bareMinerals Standing O (P) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Fall in Lust is described as a “mid-tone cool grey mauve [with a Frost finish].” It’s a cool-toned, taupe with a gray leaning and a soft, frosted finish. This shade had good color payoff, and the texture was blendable but a little powdery. I didn’t notice any fading until after eight and a half hours of wear. Chanel Tisse Gabrielle #3 (P) is darker, more shimmery. Laura Mercier Sable (P, $22.00) is warmer, less shimmery. MAC Phresh Out #4 (LE) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Bust (P, $18.00) is slightly cooler-toned. NARS Lhasa (P, $24.00) is darker, cooler-toned. MAC Romance Me (LE, $15.00) is warmer. MAC Twilight Falls (LE, $21.00) is darker. See comparison swatches/ view dupes.
Dance in the Dark is described as a “deep blackened brown [with a Matte finish].” It’s a cool-toned, dark brown with a matte finish. It had fairly good pigmentation, and the texture was a little dry and thin but not too difficult to work with. It wore well for eight hours before fading. This is a repromote. Chanel Charming #5 (LE) is slightly warmer.MAC Midnight Flurry (LE, $15.00) is darker. MAC Showstopper (LE, $15.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Rising Passions is described as a “greenish charcoal with gold pearl [with a Velvet finish].” It’s a medium-dark brown with warm, reddish undertones and an olive gold shimmer. It had good pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly. The consistency was soft but not powdery, and it lasted for just over eight hours before showing a bit of creasing. MAC Collective Chic #3 (LE) is darker. Too Faced Leopard (LE, $16.00) is lighter, warmer (more similar in the pan than swatched). MAC Well Put Together (LE, $15.00) is warmer. NARS Mekong (P, $24.00) See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This quad is so beautiful! I think I’m going to get this one 😀
Yay!! 🙂 Enjoy!
I really like the shade My fantasy but one good shade does not warrant purchasing the whole quad! Will look for dupes!
Very true — especially not at MAC prices! A little cheaper than buying your own palette and filling it (plus, these shades are LE), but not by much, so you have to love it all!
This is the quad I was most interested in, but I will take a pass as I have Chanel Gabrielle on the way and NARS mekong and MAC showstopper..essentially three of the four. These cooler neutrals are very wearable for me. Nice palette!
You are covered!
Hmmm if I were to get any of the 3 rthis would be it, but I still think the Makeup Forever Artist Palette is the better choice for me. Might change my mind once I see this in person though.
I will be curious to see which way you go!
I got both. 🙂
Oh, I want this one! Love the colors!!,
So glad you like it, Veronica!
Love these colors on you!!!!!
Thanks so much, Megan!
I like the look of this quad and especially Rising Passions. I may well purchase this one. Looks perfect for fall.
Of the three, this is the one that I expected you to like – something about those earth tones 😉
I have to say it’s absolutely refreshing to see MAC put out good quality palettes across the collection! I still find them to be a bit pricey for what you get, but at least the quality is there. Crossing fingers they can keep it up.
It certainly is, Carrie! Way more fun to review when it’s not dud after dud! (Being negative can be draining if it’s constant, lol!)
I think this one would have to be my favourite.
Yay!
Christine sweetie, what brushes did you use for this eye makeup look?
And did you use a primer if so which one?
Hi Maryam,
I used MAC’s 239, no primer.
this is a good everyday palette
just that i have too many of these now
so i will skip 🙂
Makes total sense to me 🙂 One can only have so many palettes before it gets redundant!
Love the eye look! Nice and subtle 🙂
Thanks, Jade!
Love the colors in this quad!
They worked well together!
Fall in lust is so freakin’ amazing! I’ll be scouting out those dupes for sure!
Hope one of the dupes works for you!
I like the overalll look of this quad (and I’m glad that these ones are performing better than many of MAC’s recent eyeshadow offerings!), but I think it’s a pretty dupable palette colourwise. That’s not necessarily a criticism, as it looks like a perfectly nice, wearable palette that would be good for travel.
The longer you buy, the more dupable things become – which is the nature of things, I think!
Do you think I can find a dupe for the Fall in Lust eyeshadow ?
I listed all the dupes I could think of in the post!
That’s a very pretty soft, natural look! I like this quad more than I thought I would. The colors are really nice!
Thank you!
I already have Showstopper, Lhasa and Mekong, so I guess I’m not in need of this palette, but the gold-ish one looks SO pretty… I’m still skipping this, though. Too bad.
I definitely think you could skip!
Christine, which of the palettes is your favorite? Also, which is most unique?
Maybe An Amorous Adventure, though none of them are really unique!
Loving the look of this quad, too — especially Fall in Lust. The shimmer in Dance in the Dark is great, too!
Fall in Lust was a highlight in this palette!
This is also a nice palette, I like the other two better, though. I still would love to have My Fantasy and Fall In Lust from this.
I’m surprised and glad MAC finally got LE palettes right after so many less good ones.
Me too! Pleasantly surprised!
