MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows for 2012

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) now include: Blue Flame (mineralize black with blue pearl), Cinderfella (mineralize black with silver pearl), Gilt by Association (mineralize black with gold bronze pearl), Smutty Green (cream, warm green, black veining), and Young Punk (mineralize black with pinkish purple pearl). With the exception of Smutty Green, these were originally limited shades that have been brought back for a stint as permanent products. At least once a year, MAC rotates in new mineralize eyeshadows that become permanent for a time, and these are five of ten shades that are now available.

  • Blue Flame is a rich navy blue over a blue-black base. When it’s used dry, the black base is more prevalent, while when it is used damp, the blue sheen comes out. MAC Naval Blue is bluer with a lighter base. MAC Shop & Drop is similar but has a subtler sheen. MAC Blue Storm is bluer with a lighter base.
  • Cinderfella is a brown-black with a silver-gray shimmer. When it is applied dry, it has a chalkier, sheerer look that makes it appear more muted, but when it is applied damp, it appears smoother, more intense, and the black stands out. Chanel Mirifique is the only dupe that comes to mind, though it is a bit different.
  • Gilt by Association is a rich, dark olive brown with olive gold shimmer. Again, when it is applied dry, it has a softer, slightly muted look, but when it is applied damp, it looks much more intense and the metallic sheen comes to the forefront. MAC Golden Gaze is yellower and more golden. I couldn’t think of any other dupes.
  • Smutty Green is a blackened-green base with green and dirty green shimmer. It has rather sheer, uneven color payoff when used dry, but it comes together better when applied wet. It seems awfully similar to MAC She Who Dares, perhaps with more black in it. Make Up For Ever #10 is similar in tone, but it’s not nearly as dark.
  • Young Punk is a blackened-purple base with pink-toned purple shimmer and sheen. When it is applied dry, it looks like a sheer, chalky black with purple shimmer, but when it is applied damp, it looks much more purple and the metallic sheen comes forth. Urban Decay Rockstar is kind of similar but more eggplant-hued. Giorgio Armani #2 has a similar black base but has pink and red shimmer.

I wish I could say this latest batch of Mineralize Eyeshadows was new and improved, but I still had issues with color staying true throughout the day and fall out both during and post-application.  The textures of the shades that have been out previously did seem softer, smoother, so the color payoff was better overall.  Even when I apply Mineralize Eyeshadows damp/wet and over a primer, the colors look faded after a few hours and any shade with shimmer or sparkles leads to fall out throughout the day.  I did a test look using Gilt by Association and Smutty Green, and my under eye area looked like a disco ball.

I’m so glad these are back! I generally stay away from the mineralize shadows, but I really liked the style black ones. I have Cinderfella and Young Punk, and while I don’t use them super often since they are a little messy to apply, they wear fine on me and I always get compliments on them. Definitely going to pick up Gilt by Association.

Christine Avatar

Brush – I usually just run my hand under water, then dab the brush against a droplet that’s accumulated on my hand somewhere. It’s all quite scientific 😉 I’ve don’t use Fix+ for eyeshadows myself, but maybe if it’s just one spray it’s not damp enough? The brush needs to be damp enough that it’s moist, but you don’t want it so wet that you can squeeze out water.

Lark Avatar

It’s in the brush too. Use that 239 goat and apply all over the lid working up and down. Mine swatch badly too but wear like champions! Style Black was a bold statement- one color lids. It doesn’t play well with others.

I absolutely hate Mineralize Eyeshadows, with the exception of these kind, I have Young Punk and Blue Flame already and I find them quite pretty…with that said, at least Smutty Green is mine, I’ve been dying for a dupe for She Who Dares. I don’t worry much about fallout since I can easily clean it up and I just wear them over a dark base so that fading isn’t a problem either.

DevilishDoll Avatar

That sucks, I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem with fall out throughout the day, the only part that sucks for me is removing them…somehow I can’t avoid getting the glitter in my eyes. Then again, I manage to get glitter in my eyes even if I wear it on my lips…Idk what it is with that stuff, rofl. But I still love glitter and always find a way to wear it.

gabriella Avatar

These swatch so beautifully, too bad they aren’t so great 🙁

I’ve never tried the mineralized shadows though… I MIGHT pick one up and try it for myself because they’re so gorgeous, but I don’t want to end up disappointed

Courtney Avatar

This has been the most exciting addition to MAC for me this season. I got the original Gilt by Association, but I’ve kicked myself ever since for skipping the others. But now I’m glad I did. This batch is much more glittery, which is what I’ve been wanting. I picked up and new Cinderfella and Young Punk and they’re amazing! I kinda want to replace my GBA and get Smutty Green.

I applied these over a black paint pot (for an even base) with a layer of Pixie Epoxy, then patted Cinderfella on dry. So beautiful! I wore it for several hours and it stayed pretty well.

Sylvie Avatar

Really, you think that these are more glittery than the Style Black versions? I have all the MES from Style Black (with the exception of Blue Flame) and I loved the glittery goodness! From the swatches, they look more like sheen to me, but if they are in fact glitter particles, then I’m going to have to check them out!

Nicoco Avatar

God, I did not have good experiences with the Mineralise eyeshadows, but at the same time I just want to buy them all and use them as decorations.

And Smutty Green is a freakin’ gorgeous colour.

Sunny Avatar

I LOVE these colors, but I’m not a big fan of fallout and gritty texture. I’ve owned one MAC mineralize eyeshadow, but ended up swapping it out because I don’t have the patience to work with it!

Jill Avatar

I really love some of these colors, and they actually seem different and unique, but I don’t know if it’s my skin tone or what…I’m very prone to fallout, even with a primer or a Paint Pot underneath. I can’t wear any shadow with a hint of glitter in it–dry, wet, any way I put it on, it always ends up on my face. So sadly, I won’t be trying these!

Anita Avatar

You should do a giveaway with your mineralized eyeshadows since some people love them and you never use them! Many people (including me!) would greatly appreciate that!

Line Avatar

I was waiting for stuff like that since I didn’t get to put my hands on the StYle Black edition. Young Punk has been mine for about 3 weeks now and I reeeeeaally love that colour, the glitter shows up pretty well on a black base and I personally didn’t notice any fallout during the day. Mineralize eyeshadows just seem to work for me;)

Jessica Avatar

You know, I almost never like these but looking at these swatches, they’re actually really attractive.

If I did darker/smokier looks I’d definitely pick some up. As for now I’m just not sure.

Wendy M. Avatar

For the life of me, I can’t remember why I skipped out on these (with the exception of Smutty Green) when they first came out with Style Black… but I’m going to be buying them now! I own She Who Dares, so I’m hoping it knocks Smutty Green and Blue Flame out of my list… but I am not missing Gilt By Association or Cinderfella for anything in the world! I’m currently loving purples so I may be bringing Young Punk home with me.
Thanks for the review Christine!

Lauren Avatar

Oh, I am so happy these are coming back! I bought Cinderfella years ago and it has been one of my favorite products that I own. Finally MAC has something that I want/need, haha.

MAChostage Avatar

I have to respectfully disagree on the assessment of Smutty Green. I think that the outcome you get depends mostly on the composition of the veining of your particular shadow. The one I bought applies just as opaquely and dense in color when applying dry as my Golden Gaze does. I even gasped a little (in delight) when I first swatched it and later applied it to my lids, it was that rich.

Christine Avatar

The color might change, but I would expect the texture to be pretty similar, which is where a lot of the smoothness (or lack thereof) would come into play. I’m glad yours is better! This is the one I bought, so I can’t really go off of anything else 🙁

Veronica Avatar

Cinderfella and Gilt by Association are the only two that seem opaque enough to bother with it. They’re quite pretty – it’s a shame the formula isn’t where it should be.

Vanilla Avatar

I have Gilt by Association, Blue Flame, Young Punk, and Cinderfella when they were originally released with Style Black. Despite how much I love the colours, I will admit I rarely reach for them. These new versions look very different from mine, though I understand that the veining (if that is a word) is quite different with these mineralize eye shadows, mine don’t have any of the lighter veins and not as much of the coloured parts as well. That might explain why I don’t use mine that often… they all end up looking very black to me. That, and I find needing to apply eye shadows wet to get the pigmentation I want is too much trouble when I have other eye shadows that are less troublesome. Nevertheless, these look beautiful swatched and if I hadn’t bought them previously, I probably would’ve ended up picking them up now.

Lark Avatar

These are NOT the Style Black eye shadows- apparently MAC has lost its collective corporate mind to defile the originals so! Recycled names, not re releases. The originals were plain black with color shimmer! I still trot out Guilt by Association and It never had a hint of olive anything! That color is make up death on me- I’d have noticed looking sickly. Young Punk is the only one that sounds close, but no Style Black shadows even look like these! I have them in front of me, yes, I bought all four. And I’ve seen plenty more in friends dressing rooms.

MAC has messed up a lot of great make up in re releases lately; I give you the “Beigescapade” mess.

Lark Avatar

Who else never knew Style Black was Mineralize? They’re great handling long wearing and a bunch of other fun Mineralize generally isn’t after the first generation ones.

Richie Nickel Avatar

Hey Christine, great post as always. Really excited about these being bought back as the ones I have from the Style Black & Villains collection I reach for all the time. But are these the same formulation as those? because they look slightly different. Richie x

amy Avatar

In terms of color, how would Young Punk compare to the one from Style Black? Are they dupes when actually applied (as they look different in the pan)?
Thank you.

Adriana Kohkemper Avatar

I do love MES, but many of these colors seem very similar to the Semi Precious Collection ones. Some look like repromotes, or at least very close. Not awed by this selection at all.

Haley Borneman Avatar

oh my god ive been waiting for young punk since 2009. so excited. definitely going to get this one and maybe smutty green and blue flame. AHHH best news ever! this is the one thing i always wanted mac to repromote!

Shelly Avatar

I’m so excited for the green. I missed out on She Who Dares and have debated for over a year wether or not to spend $50 or more on it on eBay. I didn’t because I didn’t want the blue. Thanks for your amazing reviews!
