MAC Moleskin Eyeshadow
MAC Me Over: Eyeshadows
There are six shades of MAC Eyeshadow ($15.00 for 0.05 oz.) launched with MAC Me Over. They include: Carbonized (frosty dark brown), Creamy Bisque (mid-tone ivory with pearlized pigments), Moleskin (nude brown), Mythical (frosty copper red), Outre (mid-tone mustard), and Satin Taupe (taupe with silver shimmer).
- Carbonized is a rich chocolate brown with bronze shimmer. The color payoff is lovely with a really soft and smooth texture. This shade has a veluxe pearl finish (so it is only 0.04 oz.). Urban Decay Lost is a bit similar, but it has a more reflective sheen and appears lighter, which is the same reason why Inglot #422 is not a dupe. It’s similar to MAC Centre Stage but with less shimmer. Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone is less brown.
- Creamy Bisque is a soft, creamy ivory with a pink tint. The finish has a pearly sheen. The pigmentation is pretty good, and I can see this being a go-to highlighter for some. This shade has a frost finish. MAC Blanc Type is more beige. It’s more like a less frosted Phloof!
- Moleskin is a softened, medium brown with a subtle, caramel warmth. This shade has a matte finish. It feels more like a satin to me, though–it has the same texture and, to some degree, the finish. It has good color payoff. It is a touch warmer than Urban Decay Naked but similar, though Naked has a softer formula. Inglot #337 is similar but has a redder base.
- Mythical is a coppery brown with a metallic shimmer-sheen. This shade has a veluxe pearl finish (so it is only 0.04 oz.). The pigmentation is good, but the color itself has a faded quality to it, and the texture is smooth and soft. It is lighter than theBalm Racy Kacy, less brown and red-tinted compared to MAC Faux Gold. It’s also a muted version of Coppering.
- Outre is a mustard-y brown–it has this mustard yellow tinge to it. This shade has a matte finish. It has a soft, smooth texture with lovely color payoff. It is reminiscent of MAC Ochre Style, which had shimmer in it. Double Feature 4 is muddier–it is grayer and browner. It’s darker and more yellowed than MAC Bamboo.
- Satin Taupe is a dark taupe with a hint of burgundy and a frosted finish. This shade has a frost finish, and it is part of the permanent range. It is similar to Bare Escentuals Meteorite.
The four I’ve tested so far are good. The texture of both Mythical and Satin Taupe are excellent, but the color payoff is good across the board. I think Moleskin, despite its demure manner, will be one that many will look to grab when it launches, because of its similarity to the famous Urban Decay Naked–consider it a sleeper hit. I know Outre will look awful on me, but it has that so-ugly-it’s-pretty kind of appeal.
MAC Me Over is a 51-piece collection for fall, which will launch in North America on August 25th, 2011 and internationally in September 2011. It will launch online approximately August 23rd but there is no concrete online launch date. All products–unless otherwise noted–are limited edition.

I was going to order MAC Saddle eyeshadow, but I like the look of Moleskin. How do you think they compare?
Saddle seems a lot darker. I would not compare them.
Christine, any chance you can add swatches with similar MAC comparisons for example Mythical with Coppering, or Faux Gold side by side etc? I am so visual and this would show me how similar the colors are to each other. Thanks.
Please use the swatch gallery! 🙂
Saddle is much darker and oranged toned. It’d work well as a crease shade, where as moleskin could be a highlight shade since it’s pretty light.
Ahh, good tip, thanks!
Moleskin looks way too dark to be a highlight for most skin tones, tbh!
I’m really not sure what my problem is – I’m pretty sure these would look uniformly bad on me, yet I want. Nerts.
These shadows are kind of odd. The only onw worth having is moleskin but the name puts me off LOL. Back to the drawing board MAC not impressed. Thanks for the swatches as always Christine, you’re the best.
Yeah, what is the deal with that horrible name?
Does anyone know why veluxe pearls contain less product?
I don’t think its actually less product. Its the same amount in the container in terms of voloume, but the same amount of the velux pearl weighs less than the others in the same size container.
Whoa whoa whoa. That satin taupe looks way different than mine. This looks brown on my MacPro monitor.
Same here! I suppose it’s our computers 😛
I’ve got Satin Taupe already and have UD’s Naked so there’s really nothing here for me (good thing, since I’m not a “no buy”…HA, let’s see how long I last this time!)
I really want to get my hands on Moleskin and I kinda wanna try Outre, I think that might be a cool shade to work with.
Have they changed Satin Taupe’s formula or something? The one that I have looks significantly more grey. Maybe I just got a dud?
I like the color of Moleskin, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t show up on my eyelids! My lids are already dark brown and always seem to wear a brown shadow when I wasn’t!
Definately Mythical for me, but the swatch look a whole lot like Bold and Brazen from the pictures! This definately have more red.
I agree that Mythical is Bold & Brazen’s dupe.
Omg. I want the matte shades, and I think they would look UHMAYZING in a look together, maybe with a touch of teal.
Is the light brown shade from the Wet n Wild Vanity pallete a possible dupe for Moleskin?
It’s similar – not as warm as Moleskin.
Did they raise the price of their eye shadows? I could’ve sworn they used to be $14 and the price was recently raised to $14.50.
MAC raises prices on all products once per year.
But i thought they changed them in feb?
Twice a year is how they have done it in the past – obviously I am not MAC corporate so I have no way of accessing any official schedule.
My recent trips to Mac showed the shadows are $15 now 🙁
I sometimes forget how much I love Satin Taupe <3
The only other one I'm drawn too is Outre, and that's only because it's different from anything else I own. I'm not sure I'd get much wear out of it though!
I really wanted to like Outre (I love yellows) but it looks like it’ll be too brown on me. Mythical is pretty tho’.
I already have satin taupe, and the NAKED palette, and mythical is the one that stands out to me here. we’ll see when I’m able to swatch it…
mythical is gorgeous!
Ok I officually want these all!!! They e/s look great, and I dont’ have nearly as many neutral colors as I’d like. I have a ton of bold, bright colors but I def. need to add more neatrals to my stash! I really like all of these colors!!!
How does Moleskin compare to my beloved dc’d Tete-a-Tint? I ask since screen settings vary. TIA!
Tete-a-tint is much, much warmer and more orange-based.
Thanks again for the great review. I might have to try outre. It might be a great blending out color for the crease to highlight area.
First thought that moleskin looked like UD Buck, but Buck is browner or on the brown side. I only like Outre…hmmm. Oh well this whole collection is a snore. Glad I’m able to save some money out of this.
How does Moleskin compare to Soft Brown?
They’re not alike – Soft Brown is warmer and more orange in comparison.
Ooooh, Moleskin looks great. I’ll be picking that one up for sure!!
I almost bought double feature 4 but didn’t because I really wanted it for the mustard yellow shade. I have many teals. I thought Outré was the same one, but you say they swatch different. If I like such a shade, do you recommend getting outré or double feature 4?
Thank you!
Just depends on whether you want the teal shade or not, since you’re paying for the teal share there – so if you don’t want it, then you’d save money getting just Outre.
Mythical looks beautiful.
Also…Moleskin compared to Bamboo? Are they close?
Bamboo is much lighter and yellower.
Thanks a lot Christine! I was thinking of getting this one, but I didn’t want to get it if it was too close to a color I own already.
Much appreciated ^_^
Outre’s kind of interesting. I have Chrome Yellow since yellow shadow was really in last fall. This one might be kinda cool too.
Between Moleskin and Soft Brown, which is a must have? I want that type of color but am not sure which to get. I am NC15ish with dark brown hair and eyes.
They’re different, so I couldn’t really say – just depends what you like. Soft Brown is much warmer.
I had no idea veluxe pearls contained less product!! what the heck mac?!? of course they’re my favorite finish too!
Moleskin swatches look similar to MAC’s tete-a-tint, discontinued, though I am desperately looking to find a replacement. Is this similar enough to be a dupe? Or is tete-a-tint closer to the inglot shade?
Tete-a-tint is much, much warmer and more orange-based.
Moleskin? What an unappealing name.
christine, is outre anything like ‘ochre’ from a long time ago?
I don’t have Ochre.
ok thanks. i might take it with me to the store when this comes out to compare….
Does Mythical compare to Glamour Check! ? 🙂
More muted.
If we’re judging by swatches, then I think Outre would look pretty good on you. D:
Makes me look sick, actually!
Moleskin looks killer…but the name makes me cringe…how does anyone find that name appealing?!
i love the color but that name is gross… i will buy it and give it a new name lol
wow! i thought mythical would turn out looking like cranberry but it’s so different. it’s still pretty so i might have to look into it!
i thought so too!
How does Moleskin compare to Kid? I can’t tell if i should get Moleskin because they look kind of similar.
Kid seems way lighter and grayer. I’m going off older swatches I have, since I don’t think I own this, so sorry…!
Christine, Mythical looks very much like Bold & Brazen from Starflash. What do you think?
Yeah, they’re similar!
I think I’ll be content if I just buy mythical. I already own satin taupe and the naked palette, but I can tell by the swatch that Outre would look awful on me. 🙂 Even if it didn’t look horrible, it doesn’t look like something I would wear on a daily basis. I appreciate your review, Christine. 🙂
PEOPLE! You are not getting less of the Velux pearl in the package. You get the same amount of shadow, it just weigh less. Just like 5 lbs of flour will look very different from 5 lbs of feathers. They will not fit in the same size container. They fill the pot with the color the same volume as the other colors…it simply weighs less.
Where are the colours gone, lol?!
Ok, I’ve understood that this is a warm-skintoned collection… I just hope they will also provide a cold-skintoned one. I think I’ll skip the entire collection. Not a single color decent on me 🙁
Thanks for the swatches! I was just wondering since Moleskin is so close to UD NAked, how close is it to MAC Kid?
Kid seems way lighter and grayer. I’m going off older swatches I have, since I don’t think I own this, so sorry…!
not put off by the name lol! how does moleskin compare to kid ?
Kid seems way lighter and grayer. I’m going off older swatches I have, since I don’t think I own this, so sorry…!
omg wearable colors yay!!!
outré is the first mac eyeshadow that tells me “buy me” in, like, two years.
Are Moleskin and MAC Modelette (satin / LE) comparable in color?
I think it is less warm than Modelette.
Thank you Christine 🙂
Thanks for the great eyeshadow swatches Christine! Will you be able purchase & swatch the Creamy Bisque eyeshadow before the release date? Also do you think Moleskin compares with Wedge at all? These are the only two eyeshadows I’m interested in since I tend to like neutrals, thanks again.
Not was warm or dark!
Thanks so much for taking the time to post swatches of the Creamy Bisque and Carbonized Eyeshadows in this collection, you work so hard on this, much appreciated!! 🙂
Hi Christine, do you think Moleskin could be used to contour?
For a small area, it could – for a larger area, I just don’t think it’s going to give you the texture you’ll want to contour, say, your cheek. It also depends on how light/dark you are!
Hmmm, I’m about NC20 / 25, and I just wanna contour around the nose area, would that be suitable?
It could be – though I think there are better contouring shades out there!
i like 3 of the shadows outre, creamy bisque & carbonized. Might skip the creamy bisque though, seems pretty dupable. Actually so does the carbonized but im a sucker for browns.
Christine, how does Carbonized compare to MAC Buckwheat? or even UD Dark Horse?
Closer to Buckwheat, I think Dark Horse is too warm.
Hi Christine! Would you say we need Carbonized if we have Centre Stage? I know Carbonized is a little warmer, but do you think the difference would be apparent upon application? Thanks!!
Centre Stage is similar – a little more shimmered.
Thanks a lot for the swatches. How do you think Carbonized compares to Magnetic Fields and Night Maneuvers? TIA
Night Maneuvers is too black-based, Magnetic Fields seems a bit lighter and warmer.
Hi Christine,
Great review, as always! How would you say carbonized compares to Centre Stage from Peacocky?
Centre Stage is similar – a little more shimmered.
It’s funny, one would think Carbonized would be easy to dupe, because there are so many chocolate browns in the cosmetic world. My wallet won’t be happy to hear this news. 😛
Hey Christine,
How does Moleskin compare to Kid?
Thanks!
Kid seems way lighter and grayer. I’m going off older swatches I have, since I don’t think I own this, so sorry…!
Mythical looks so cool in the pan but it’s a colour I just can’t (or maybe “won’t” – perhaps it’s time for me to try) wear. I really like Carbonized but I have SO many shadows that are so close in colour that the difference, once applied to the eyes and blended, it negligible (MAC’s Centre Stage, the brown side of Illusionary/Burning Ambition, not to mention Mulch and then all the other browns in various palettes from UD, Too Faced). So I’ll probably pass on this group…but you never know; I may fall hard for Carbonized when I see it in-store.
Thanks for the swatches. One question: how does Carbonize compare to Centre Stage?
Centre Stage is similar – a little more shimmered.
Really loving the look of Carbonized! What a gorgeous chocolate brown.
Is the Moleskin eyeshadow similar to MAC Wedge eyeshadow? Or is it closer to Soft brown? I’m looking for soft brown from MAC but cannot find it in my country 🙁 Maybe Moleskin is a good dupe?
Closer to Wedge, not quite as red-toned as Soft Brown.
Thank you! 🙂
Moleskin.. Just the name disgusts me enough not to look twice. None of these really stood out to be tbh.
Satin taupe and carbonized are gorgeous!! I can totally see them suiting my NC40 skin tone! I’ve been lusting after Satin Taupe since ages, high time I go and buy it now!
Christine,
Thanks for adding the other colors! Is Carbonized a bit like Mulch?
Mulch is lighter, warmer.
How does moleskin compare to modellete eyeshadow which was limited edition….I’m looking for one similar to that?
Modelette is lighter, warmer, and has gold shimmer.
teehee. That was exactly the first question that popped in my mind as well! Thanks for answering Christine!
Hi Christine!
I’m a Mac Pro member, and have been waiting for Mac Me Over to pop up on the pro site since Thursday (as usual), but nothing! I just recently called Mac Pro and they’re telling me it’s not coming out on the pro site or regular site until September; that it’s launching in stores first this time. Have you heard of this? (I thought one of the perks of being a pro member, was that you got to purchase products ahead of time.) I’m a little disappointed.
I haven’t heard this, but I did check with MAC last week (late last week) and they said it was coming out on August 25th & there were no delays. I purchased all of the remaining products (whatever I didn’t receive from MAC PR) from the SF PRO store – they launched it as far as I know last week on Thursday like PRO stores were supposed to…
It would be an interesting move, no? Perhaps forcing people to see products and be more persuaded by that than buying online – though I swear I make more impulse buys online!
Christine, is Mythical eyeshadow comparable to Mythology? It looks like it in the picture….?
Thanks. 🙂
It’s a bit less orange, but they’re similar.
I like Carbonized–think that one is a must-have from this collection.
I love Moleskin! I really want to wear it in the crease, maybe paired with All That Glitters on the lid, and Blanc Type as a highlight, keeping it simple, neutral, and soft. Such a beautiful collection! I like the look of Carbonized too. I’m glad its not a frost, I prefer veluxe pearl, satin, and matte finishes for my everyday looks 🙂
Satin Taupe is a MUST!
its from the permanate collection lol
I like Outre, but I have no idea how I can use it with my pale skin and blue eyes…
liner?
hi christine,
how does moleskin compare to modelette?
thanks!
Modelette is lighter, warmer, and has gold shimmer.
crap, i want all of them
i want carbonized.. reminds me of Galapagos by NARS with warmer sparkle, and darkhorse slash smog from the naked palette! what are your thoughts?
Both of those are lighter and much warmer, so they end up looking very different to me.
Christine, does moleskin feel chalky to you?
Nope!
Does creamy bisque compare at all to virgin from the UD Naked pallette – I ran out of mine and am looking for a dupe.
How does Dazzlelight compare to Creamy Bisque?
Not as beige – lighter
do they have these in the pro pan refill form?
No, limited edition shades only come in pots.
why do veluxe pearl shades contain less product than eyeshadows with different finishes? 🙂
Probably because it’s filled more by volume than weight, and the materials they use for veluxe pearls take up the same volume (like they fill the whole pan) but weigh less.
After buying Mythical and bring it home, I discovered it is very similard to Reward Yourself from the big bounce line
Do you think Mythical would look good on blue eyes (Blond hair, fair skin), Christine?
Yes!
Christine-how does mythical compare to mythology? They seem similar and I have mythology so I’d hate to buy something similar.
hi there, does anyone here have brown eyes, dark hair, medium tan and uses Mythical? that color has not landed in our shores yet, and I’m curious if it goes well with my tanned skin. it looks gorgeous on green eyed ladies though, at least based on the googled photos.
i fear that it might give that “just cried” look on a BB 4.25 skin tone. any feedback will be much appreciated, thanks!
Mythical looks beautiful (more bronze than red) on my warm tanned skin & brown eyes
Hi Christine,
Do you think MAC Mythical Eyeshadow is very similar to MAC Expensive Pink?
Not as pink!
how do i know which ones are permanent or limited edition?
The shades that are permanent are marked as permanent.
Hi Christine ! Is Moleskin similar to Kid?
Warmer!
Hi Christine,
I read through all the comments and your responses and wow… you sure are patient! I have a question that has not yet been asked 🙂
You responded to someone saying that Wedge and Moleskin are similar in colour. What are they like to work with? — i.e. Is one better/easier to blend with than the other?
Finally, am I correct in thinking that Moleskin is matte?
Thanks for your time!
They’re both pretty easy to work with but I’d say Moleskin is slightly easier but really not by much. It’s listed as a matte but felt more like a satin to me. HTH!
Christine,
did you try Outre on yourself? I had the same hesitation as you did we have same coloring but suprisingly it looked good!
