MAC Dare to Wear: Eyeshadows Review, Photos, Swatches (Part 2)
MAC Dare to Wear Eyeshadows
MAC Dare to Wear: Eyeshadows, Part 2
First, make sure you’ve read Part 1. In this post, you’ll notice four blue-based shades–this collection is definitely skewed towards blue. There are three permanent shades here: Sky Blue, Atlantic Blue, and Winkle; the first available only at PRO, the latter two at all freestanding stores.
- Zingy is a medium blue that leans just a little green. It’s a less intense version of Electric Eel eyeshadow. It was also a little fussy to get to layer right in a swatch–though it’s pretty once it comes together.
- Sky Blue is a soft, pale sky blue with silvery-white shimmer in a frost finish. It’s a little on the sheer side and can be a bit dusty. This is a permanent PRO shade.
- Atlantic Blue is an intense shade of deep blue with a violet undertone in a matte finish. This is one of my favorite shades–period! This is a permanent PRO shade.
- Winkle is a softened cornflower blue with a satin finish. It needs to be layered to get a nice level of intensity, but it has a very buttery texture. This is a permanent shade.
- Shock-a-holic is a medium-dark purple with strong red undertones in a matte finish. It’s a little brighter, richer version of Vibrant Grape; brighter/purpler version of Nocturnelle or Fig 1.
- Crazy Cool is a shimmery cool-toned lilac with a silver-white sheen in a veluxe pearl finish. It’s a darker version of Digit and a lighter version of Beautiful Iris. It’s a little on the sheer side and not as smooth as I’d expect for a veluxe pearl.

I love how many mattes shades there are this time around!
Me too, Erin! I’m a huge fan of vibrant mattes. Newly Minted and I actually get along!
I LOVE all the blues! they are amazing! love it!
So pretty I like Crazy Cool a lot! <3 Can somebody answer a question I have? I want to know if these are in MAC stores? And if they are how long will they be available? Thanks so much <3
They launch in-store on Thursday. I don’t know how long it will be available for – probably a month or more, but certain shades may sell out faster than others.
Thank you!!! I’m taking a shopping trip at the end of August and I’m picking up some MAC items and I want Sassy Grass. 🙂
Christine,
Do you find Shock-a-holic easier to work with than Vibrant Grape? I have a really hard time getting a good pay off on that one and I am putting it up for sale cause it doesn’t work for me.
Liking the colour maybe Shock-a-holic will be better?
Yes, but I don’t find Vibrant Grape very hard to work with…
I really like the slight green tinge to Zingy! I think I might end up with Going Bananas and Zingy even though I keep trying to talk myself out of Zingy! I really want Shock-a-holic, but I think I might get Sugarpill’s Poison Plum instead since it seems like Shock-a-holic might be harder to work with.
shockaholic reminds me of MUFE #92. do you know if its a dupe? Such a pretty collection!
I don’t think it’s alike at all, TBH.
From the swatch here, they seem similar to me. Could you please do a side-by-side comparison?
Please see this swatch: http://www.temptalia.com/make-up-for-ever-eyeshadows-79-160-142-92-89-purples
#92 is violet, Shock-a-holic is much, much redder.
Now I see that they are really different… Thanks Christine 🙂
No prob, Isheeta!
I think Sky Blue and Crazy Cool are lovely.
First off, love your blog!
How does shock-a-holic compare to violet trance?
Nothing alike — Violet Trance is a lot more blue based/violet.
How does Zingy compare to Urban Decay’s Dashiki? And how does Shock-a-holic compare to Psychedelic Sister? Obviously the finishes are different, but I’m wondering how similar the colors themselves are. (Trying to talk myself out of things!) Also, what are the textures of these mattes like? I have trouble with lots of MAC’s mattes, so I’m hesitant to pick a lot of this collection up.
Similar, but it’s not quite as blue – a little lighter!
Shock-a-holic is redder but they’re closer!
Zingy zingy zingy zingy
Is there any shade in the MAC collection that is similar to NARS’s China Blue?
Maybe Naval?
I love the sky blue!!!
Is Atlantic Blue a permanent color, or is it a permanent PRO color?
It’s permanent at all freestanding stores.
I have green eyes (well one is blue-green but shhhh) NC20 and dark brown hair…Not sure I could wear blues or greens from this collection. I like “Shock-a-holic” though. I’m just thinking “do I need it”? I have “Vibrant grape” Nocturnelle” “Beautiful Iris” and “Stars and rockets.” I barely wear colors on my eyes…But I love purple.
What do you think?
I think if you barely wear colors and already have those four – I think you could skip it without regretting it, but if you really want it, and it’s not out of your budget, it’s not a bad choice 🙂
The blues are so pretty! even though i don’t wear blue eyeshadows, i’m tempted just to get one because my favorite color is blue! zingy looks so bold and bright 🙂
Hi Cristine can you please make a swatch of zyngy and eletric eel to see the difference
You can see Electric Eel here – http://www.temptalia.com/mac-eyeshadow-swatches-blues
Christine — did you like the texture of Crazy Cool? It is a Veluxe Pearl, but I don’t think it lives up to the normal quality. I have it on hold, and may skip. Thanks!
It’s not as buttery as the usual VPs. I thought it was a frost at first, actually! It’s not bad by any means, though!
I love the color of aqua/sky blue. They look really similar to me! Is it basically the finish that’s different?
Sky Blue is definitely blue; Aqua has a green tinge – it’s Aqua, not blue.
Thank you so much for the swatches! Do you think Zingy is like Clarity at all?
Lighter, a little muted.
Crazy Cool looks great on pale skin, I love it!
You’ve displayed these pots beautifully…
They look so pretty, how does shock-a-holic compare to MUFE 92?
MUFE #92 is a lot cooler and more violet – they are not similar, IMO.
http://www.temptalia.com/make-up-for-ever-eyeshadows-79-160-142-92-89-purples
I’m only like the purples, the other aren’t really me. I guess that’s why they’re Dare to Wear 🙂
i was thinking to myself “hey i didnt write this comment” not thinking that it was another sherri…lol
LOL!
I really need to get Sky Blue and Crazy Cool, though I am really not sure how to wear these. Christine, would you be willing to do a tutorial or two with some of these eyeshadows?
I’m sure I will do some once I have a chance to play around with them some 🙂 They just arrived this afternoon, so I haven’t had much time to use them yet!
I was wondering if you thought that Zingy was anything like Electric Eel. (i could be way off haha but i was wondering your opinion) and i was also wondering what about Crazy cool you don’t really care for. Thank you so much!
I’m sorry i just realized that you said it was a little less intense version of Electric Eel! Which one would you recommend formula wise?
I like Electric Eel’s formula more, just because it’s very smooth, buttery, and pigmented.
Crazy Cool is just very similar to Digit/Beautiful Iris, so I think it’s easily skipped!
I love all the mattes! I picked up Zingy & Crazy Cool. I’m obsessed with the shade of blue that Zingy is. I’m wanting to dye my hair that color.
I have 4 of theses shades already but the remaining 8? THEY SHALL BE MINE.
Oh, I’m giddy.
Hey,
I don’t know if you meant to say winkle is a matte finish, but its actually a Satin.
Thanks for you review too, made me realize I don’t “need” crazy cool as much as I may want it.
why do you say skip to crazy cool? is it just a personal preference or is there issues with it?
It’s very similar to two permanent shades – so you could skip it and not miss out.
oh okay, thanks Christine!
Christine,
How does Shock-a-holic compare to the new NARS shadow Daphne?
They are very different – Daphne is more like a violet purple, whereas Shock-a-holic has a lot of red in it.
http://www.temptalia.com/nars-daphne-eyeshadow-review-photos-swatches-fall-2010
Do you know how Crazy Cool compares the mineralize duo from last christmas? I think it was called devil-may-care and had lavender/silver.
Similar, not quite as silverish!
I have Sky Blue and Atlantic Blue and honestly……..they’re not working for me.
Atlantic Blue – I know you love it and try to love it as well but it’s just not working out well. Not a lot goes on the brush and it’s hard to blend it out – still trying to make it work though.
Sky Blue – grr…I love blues but when I put this in a look, I never like how the colour turns out (whitish-silver with a TiNy hint of blue) and I just end up mixing with the medium colour. >_>
Hey Rosanna,
What brush do you use with Atlantic Blue? I tend to use the 226 myself!
I use the 239 or 242 and the 224 to blend.
I’m thinking if I dig into the shadow more than perhaps I’ll get better payoff..
I scuff my brush in the pot, and then I pick up the color.
I was wondering why you chose Crazy Cool as the “Skip” item. Is the quality lacking? It’s the only colour that appeals to me, lol.
It’s very similar to two existing, permanent shades that MAC has, and it’s not quite as smooth as I’d expect from a veluxe pearl. It’s not bad – it’s just skippable.
Do you know how Crazy Cool compares to Devil-May-Care (from last Christmas)…sorry if I already asked this…I double checked the shade and that’s what it’s called.
the purples! i die!
Hey Christine, another comparison if you don’t mind. How does Shock-a-holic compare to Sugarpill’s Poison Plum? And if you had to decide between the two which would you choose. Thanks for your time. 🙂
It’s lighter & brighter 🙂 Not sure which I’d pick, to be honest.
off topic but i brought a mac 189 brush from mac today and i noticed that my brush didnt have a location stamped into it..like france or japan…is this unusual? does your 189 have a location stamp?
I think so!
hey chrisitne! what was that really helpful tip one of the commenters had about MACs manufacturing dates? those A69 numbers and all. i completely forgot.
The letter indicates the batch number (A = first, B = second), while the second number/letter indicates the month (1-9 = January through September; A = October, B = November, C = December), and the last number is the year it was made.
how does crazy cool compare to beautiful iris?
It’s just a little lighter.
You honestly have the best photos and swatches 😀
Thanks, Bernice!
I don’t wear a lot of blues, so I think I’ll just get Shock-a-holic. I like bluees, they just don’t tend to work as well on my skintone.
To me, Sky Blue eyeshadow looks a little bit like Mutiny pigment. Would you say they are similar?
Wayyy bluer. Mutiny has more teal in it.
Hey Christine. Your site has become a daily necessity for me and a must read before purchasing.
Just wanted to say that I think it is SO AWESOME that you respond to every question. I actually started reading the comments regularly because your responses actually make it feel like a discussion section!
Also, I wanted to say that I think “Free to Be” is practically an exact dupe of “Perky” from Spring Forecast. Any thoughts on this? Am I crazy? I haven’t heard anyone make that comparison.
xoxo
*SC*
Aww! Thank you! 🙂
Perky is pinker, I’d say, and the texture is a bit different. Free to Be definitely has this coral tone to it.
skip crazy cool?? thats the only good one in this sea of too-brights…
The point of the collection is to be bright, though – so if it’s not your thing… doesn’t make the rest inherently bad, IMO. Different strokes for different folks!
Looooove these shades. I’m so bummed that this eyeshadow is only available in our Pro MAC store in Amsterdam. I live far away so now I can’t get Shock-o-holic 🙁
any of the blues similar to Submarine?
is Nuctornelle similar to Shock a holic?
Nope, Submarine is pretty dark. Nocturnelle is much darker!
i want sassy green, winkle, and atlantic blue.
do you know if going bannanas and crest the wave are simmilar?
Going Bananas isn’t quite as yellow as Crest the Wave.
can you do some looks with these? they look so pretty, especially all the blues, but i don’t know how wearable they are.
Yes – I just received these yesterday afternoon, so I haven’t had much time to do anything but review them, but I certainly plan to do a few looks with them. I have also used many of these shades in the past, since they are permanent.
Hey Christine thanks for the swatches really appreciate it, was just wondering if you would be able to do some looks using some of these shades for a little inspiration???
I will certainly try once I have time to play with them 🙂 I only just got them!
thankyou!!!!!!
Wow, these are so pigmented! Lvoe how they look! 🙂
Crap. I love all of these, and I’m WAY overbudget this month. Curse you, MAC!
My inner child is demanding that I get them all and do Double Rainbow eyes. (giggles)
Wow. A collection of bold shades many leaning towards blue – sign me up! I’ve only had mild, if any, reaction to Mac collections but this one actually has me wanting to go to Mac (it has been at least 8 years since I bought any Mac).
they havee many pigment!!! loveeeeeeee themm <3
What a fun collection! I loved the colours but would hardly touch them so I only got Crazy Cool with B2M 🙂 It was different enough from the MAC perm. shades to get… for me at least. But I’m a sucker for purples. Shock was chalky 🙁
Thanks for the swatches, Christine!
I noticed you said that some of the colours require some packing on; I was just wondering which M.A.C. brush is the best for this??? As at the moment I’m using a non branded brush which just doesn’t cut it with matte colours such as chrome yellow etc. Would defiantly appreciate the help as I am looking to purchase some of these colours and so will be needing a decent brush to work with.
I use the 239 🙂 In a pinch, you could use a sponge tip brush.
OMG. I love, need and want Sky Blue!
Awesome swatches!!! Zingy, Crazy Cool and maybe Sky Blue are coming home with me today!!
Thanks for the swatches Christine! I got Zingy, Sky Blue, and Atlantic Blue today (also got others but they’re not related to today’s DTW). The Atlantic Blue was purchased on your recommendation alone. It’s really not a color I would normally choose for myself because it’s so dark and matte. I haven’t tried it out yet. As of right now I can only think of wearing it in the crease. What’s your favorite way to use it?
I hope you love it! I wear it in the crease or outer corner/lid area most often (just ’cause it’s dark!) — LOVE it with aquas, teals, greens, and purples!!
how does ZINGY compare to FRESH WATER?
I want to buy one of them, but I dont know which way to go….
thanks for the help!
Not as dark!
Shock-a-holic is screaming for me to purchase it! If love at first sight is possible, this is it!
Crazy Cool and Sky Blue get my vote. But more importantly, I love the pics you took of these. Totally awesome. 🙂
Do you know when are they going to be available on http://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/ ?
Probably in the next 2 weeks.
how does Zingy compare to Clarity? are they similar?
Thx for the review!
They’re similar — Clarity is darker/brighter.
Woo! Dare To Wear just hit stores here!! I think I might skip Zingy because it’s so close to Electric Eel (right?). I’m going to try to get my hands on Going Bananas. Do you think Crazy Cool is a good choice if you don’t have any purples? Digit might be too light for my taste! Also, is Louder, Please similar to Passionate (but less pink perhaps?)?? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks 🙂
It IS close. Like you could own both and see differences but you probably wouldn’t miss either.
Crazy Cool would be a good choice if you don’t have any purples 😉 I find Louder, Please brighter and pinker than Passionate!
Is MUFE #159 the closest dupe to Atlantic? In the photos from your review they look very similar, but how about in person?
I’d say it’s a pretty good dupe!
Hi Christine!!! what would you pair sky blue eyeshadow with? would it go with aqua eyeshadow you think?? i would like to get both eyeshadows but i dont know how to wear them! am an NC30, thank you!! 🙂
Blues, aquas, teals… yes, it would definitely work with Aqua, though I’d probably use something darker/more contrasting!
oh nevermind i just watched your tutorial using aqua, winkle and atlantic blue…and i love that look!!! thank you 🙂
I’ve got a quick question. How does Crazy Cool compare to the lightest color in the Togetherness mineralize eyeshadow trio from In The Groove? Would you suggest one over the other?
It’s a little darker – but theya re similar! I would suggest Crazy Cool over the trio.
