MAC Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection: Eyeshadow

Six vibrant eyeshadows debuted with the MAC Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection: Off the Page, Maira’s Magic, Crest the Wave, Purple Shower, Haunting, and Violet Trance.

Eyeshadow ($14.50)

  • Off the Page is a vibrant, bright orange with golden orange shimmer and sheen. This reminds me of the ever-fabulous Fab & Flashy eyeshadow that came out with C-Shock two years ago. It has a frost finish.
  • Maira’s Magic is a subdued medium pink with a satin finish, so it just has a subtle bit of sheen. It’s like a more matte and muted version of Da Bling.
  • Crest the Wave is a frosty yellow with gold sheen. It has a frost finish. This originally came out with the Naughty Nauticals quad.
  • Purple Shower is a soft, satiny fuchsia-purple with subtle sheen. I’ve always liked this color, and I’m glad to see it cropping up again for a spell.
  • Haunting is a sheer wash of blue with just a hint of aqua. I’ve never been found of this shade, just because the pay off isn’t tops. It really does need a good base to work.
  • Violet Trance is a matte dark blue-based violet purple. This originally released two or three years ago, so avid collectors may already have this in their stash. As lovely as it appears in the pot, it’s not the easiest matte to work with. I’d have to vote Make Up For Ever #92 if you’re looking for a deep, intense purple, just because this one doesn’t have a dream texture. It’s so-so, a bit chalky and thus drags a bit, and pigmentation is decent but not intense.

  • Product: 8/10
  • Value: 8/10
  • Ease of Use: 7/10
  • Packaging: 8/10

Recommendation: This just may be the closest we come to a C-Shock redux (though not as good as C-Shock). If you like bright pops of color, you should play with these. I really liked Off the Page and Purple Shower the most. Crest the Wave is pretty, but I’m not sold on it (at least not for my skin tone).

So awesome!
Christine, how would you describe the texture for PURPLE SHOWER e/s to be like? And do you think there is a close enough dupe for it from the permanent collection? Thanks in advance!

I got Violet Trance without swatching it at the store, and I got home, swatched it, and discovered to my horror that the pigmentation and texture of this eyeshadow suck! I was so disappointed, because it’s such a pretty color. I’ll either return it or swap it on MUA.

TO all the folks who’re lemming Violet Trance – honestly, your $$$ is truly better spent on MUFE’s No 92 like Christine said. I have it – bought it only very recently and i find every opportunity to wear it! its really deep and pigmented and such a gorgeous shade that lasts and lasts.

I’ve been looking at swatches and Purple Shower looks similar to Creme De Violet. Do you think they are? Or is it worth it to get both of them?

DevilishDoll Avatar

Good. I bought Haunting, Maira’s Magic, Purple Shower, Full of Fuchsia, Obviously Orange, Color Matters, Artistic License, Off the Page and then Fuchsia from the perm line. Can you tell I like bright colors? LOL

Bridgette Avatar

No they are both different. I have both Crest the Wave and Bright Future. Crest the Wave is a much lighter yellow and it has a frost finish. Bright Future is almost like crayon yellow with a veluxe pearl finish.

I know i may not sound so specific. But there is a difference with the two. I tried my best and I hope this helps you out 🙂

I like violet trance and haunting as well…purple shower looks like a darker version of stars and rockets but as I love stars n rockets that might be ok with me. When does this launch?

This collection still isn’t out in the UK so I have some time to make a decision. I was really set on Haunting and Violet Trance until I read this – now I’m thinking I’ll pass on violet. I still really like Haunting and I can’t find a nice pale MAC turquoise which has good colour payoff, people tell me Aquadisiac is sheer, too.

I bet it’d look great over the Otherworldly PP.

Originally I was torn over the orange, since I liked the way it looked but MAC described it as mustardy. Mustard? Where? It’s not mustardy at all. I don’t have a nice orange and might need to pick that up.

Oh, can anyone tell me how similar Crest the Wave is to Going Bananas from C-Shock? It looks very similar, I already have Going Bananas and utterly adore it, but I don’t need another.

to everyone, violet trance is AWFUL. i bought it yesterday and i’m returning it today. i cannot get it to show up for shit. i’ve layed it on udpp, mac’s luna cream color base, painterly paint pot, and nyx milk and it will not show up!!!!! just get mufe #92, it maybe five dollars more but it’s so worth it!!

Cassie Avatar

I bought haunting. If you apply it over painterly and pack it on it looks great. However, I am a neutral girl, so I can’t quite figure out how to wear it besides by itself. I’ve just applied it over my whole lid. I am definatley going to keep it though. And I am proud of myself for venturing out of my comfort zone.

is maira’s mood the same as maira’s magic like how it is listed on here…cause i got maira’s mood yesterday from this collection and thought that they may have changed the name, etc….

Cathy Avatar

yeah i bought it from the MAC counter in Macy’s…i just thought it was strange cause i thought the name was supposed to be miara’s magic and not maira’s mood…

i bought haunting and wore it over the ‘matching’ paint pot (otherworldly?) from the alexander mcqueen collection. i was a bit worried that it would be a bit chalky, but the paint pot makes it pop.

when i swatched purple shower and violet trance at the counter i found the purple shower had v poor colour pay-off….and violet trance was good so i bought that instead…but that’s the opposite of what everyone on here is saying, so now i’m a bit worried! i haven’t opened my violet trance yet…. 🙁

Lee Avatar

Im wearing violet trance today in my crease blended out with Digit and shroom. I love this shadow. It isn’t chalky, I think it’s on par with Carbon… newly minted is more chalky for me.

I would recommmend this eyeshadow to everyone. I almost didn’t get it because of the bad reviews.. but I am so glad i did!

It’s so vivid and doesn’t take as much work as everyone kept saying it does.
