MAC Magically Cool Liquid Powders

Relaunching on May 5th, Magically Cool Liquid Powders (each $29.50 for 0.84 oz.) will join MAC’s permanent range with three shade offerings: Honey Rose (sheer rosy beige with multidimensional shimmer), Cajun (sheer bronze shimmer with reflects gold), and Truth & Light (sheer shimmer that reflects silver and pink). Honey Rose is new, while Cajun and Truth & Light are repromotes from Venomous Villains.

  • Honey Rose is a pink-tinged champagne with a metallic-frost finish. It has very subtle cool undertones but should work well on warmer skin tones. On extremely pale skin tones, it might work as a blush, but overall, it is much more likely to be a highlighter.
  • Cajun is a medium tan with soft golden sheen and warm undertones. It gives my cheeks a tanned look.
  • Truth & Light is a soft, beige nude with a peach sheen. Like Honey Rose, this is best as a highlighter or possibly all-over powder. It’s more sheen than color.

Magically Cool Liquid Powder is a cool product–it does feel like liquid when you initially apply it, and it quickly transitions to a powder finish within mere seconds. It’s certainly a fun product to play around with and swatch. Personally, I find it more difficult to apply and blend out, because once it dries, it doesn’t like to move or diffuse. It’s less concerning with lighter shades like Honey Rose and Truth & Light, but with a more color-loaded shade like Cajun, yields a blotchy look.

I found the best application method was with a stippling brush and using a very feathery touch, because it gives you more room for error. Since they do not like to blend out once dried, they do wear well (eight hours).

When these are brand new, there is a black sticker that covers the entire inside portion of the jar, which keeps all of the product locked in. For photography purposes, I removed the entire label, but I would recommend only lifting it to reveal a few holes (perhaps 5 or so), and cutting the lifted area, but keeping the majority of the lid still sealed. The sifter just allows far too much powder to come through, and a lot of it will puff and disperse in the area each time you go to open it (my jeans were covered in micro-shimmer after opening Cajun, which I’ve had since September).

I just got myself Truth and Light from the Venomous Villains Collection, now I’m really happy I didn’t get Cajun it would have been too dark for me. Too bad it only got a B- , Honey Rose is a lovely shade though.

Honey Rose looks beautiful on you! While Truth and Light makes you look pale and lovely! T&L would be good if you go for dark eye makeup and maybe H.R would look good as everyday 🙂

I very much like Truth and Light and Honey Rose. I’m glad they’re permanent so I have time to get them because I really want to use my “disposable makeup income” for those new eye shadows before THEY are gone!

I tried these when the came out with VV and got had an almost immediate allergic reaction to them. Im still trying to figure out which ingredient it could have been. Thank god the MA only tested it on my hand. So I don’t think I will be getting these

I’m curious about this product! Are these make-up setting powders like MAC’s blotting powder, or more like a finishing powder (kinda like Guerlain Meteorites)? Because it sets so quickly, is it better on bare skin?

I’ve had Truth and Light from the Venemous Villains collection… It’s so fun to watch the way the powder moves in the jar, it really is kind of like a cross between liquid and powder. Anyway, I love the idea of these, but they always look “cakey” on me if I apply as a finishing powder. I’m going to try your tip for applying them with a stippling brush…

Cris Avatar

You need to use a stippling brush and clean the brush on a towel between applications so it won’t go on blotchy. The magically cool powders are like 75% water so you have to use a dry clean brush with every application.

I’m confused on one thing with this product, is it suppose to be like a beauty powder where its sheer but you can use it as a blush or what, sorry just confused.

Hi Christine,

Would you know if the Honey Gold shade is at all similar to the Prescriptives Rose Gold cooling powder? I got that from the CCO the other day and I wonder if I need Honey Gold as well. Thanks!

I didn’t buy these when venomous villians came out because my mac lady told me they were going to become permanent so I’m glad I didn’t go crazy on the collection but I’m excited to try em now 🙂

I like the honey one and the last one, not cajun, I think it’s far too dark and I don’t use bronzer! Thanks for an awesome review 🙂

I bought Truth and Light from VV, I like it very much and I’m glad to see it become permanent! Honey Rose looks great too, I will try it out at the counter. Too bad they got a B-, though.

Argh, I’m caught between getting Truth and Light and the Iridescent Powder in Silver Dusk. I’ve always liked these kind of products for highlighting. I do have a question though: I’ve heard many people mention that in the ones from the venomous villains collection, the liquid feeling disappears after a couple months. Can they still be used after that?

Amanda Avatar

I like how Revlon and Almay came out with something similar now that is more expensive per ounce than the MAC Magically Cool Liquid Powders…I’m happy I looked into that before purchasing the drugstore product.

as a makeup junkie i wanted to check it out. i thought it was going to be like a typical highlighting powder, but found you had to work with it differently…and very quickly. i found it to be quite vexing, if i applied too much it would gather and cake on itself. the cooling effect was a bit of gimmick, and unnecessary. i just wanted a highlighting powder i could build and simply dust off if there were too much. It also made me look incredibly old and i’m only 22. it also made my skin look red and burnt. (honey rose). so i didnt find the color to be as natural as everyone says…(on me anyway). oh well..i thought it was cool product none the less.. just not for me.
