MAC Devil's Food Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Devil’s Food Lipstick

MAC Devil’s Food Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “glossy deep plum [with a] frost [finish].” It’s a burgundy-brown with barely-there ruby red micro-shimmer. Maybelline Plum Paradise is redder, brighter. Chanel Baroque is less red, browner. MAC Approaching Storm is darker, less shimmery. MAC Odyssey has a pinker shimmer/iridescence.

It has semi-sheer to semi-opaque color payoff, and it applies somewhat evenly, but it pulls and settles into lip lines. This one wore that way, too, where the color migrated and gathered into the creases of the lip while it wore. Devil’s Food lasted just over four hours on me, which is about average. It was a bit drying, though, which wasn’t surprising, given the consistency wasn’t as creamy as it could have been and did tug slightly at lips during application.

I have to admit these darker shades are making me nostalgic for the 90s. This used to be my go-to color in high school. As for today, I most likely wouldn’t wear it.

i used to be able to wear these darker colors in high school too, but as i get older they don’t look so good on me anymore ..sigh

Why dont you think they dont look good anymore please elaborate if you dont mind? I wanted to try this out is it going to look rediculous on someone pushing 30? I guess im kind of clueless About age appropriate colors?

Too bad, I already have Boyfriend Stealer, I don’t want another lipstick with a beautiful color but uneven.. Even if this is not as uneven as BF! Thanks Christine ^^

I’d imagine that this lipstick would work better as a layering product rather than on it’s own. I would love to see it layered on top of a dark plum, purple, or red lipliner, or maybe even a dark brown…It’s a shame that it doesn’t wear so well though.

I still really love this! I’ll use a primer/ balm/liner… what ever I need to do. I think it’s worth the trouble for me lol. Reminds me of a discontinued Revlon shade that I used up completely. Thanks for the review!

I think it looks very nice on you. Would be a pretty and mature color. I actually have been using a MAC lip liner that I have and got a few years ago to color in my lips. I put on Mac’s lip primer first and then color my lips in. I am kind of getting into a dark lipstick trend on my lips. Using a primer is a must with anything helps color last longer, helps cancel out the natural color of your lips, and creates a smooth application.

I love the color, but disappointed in the quality. I have been seeing this a lot from MAC lately. They need to step it up and get their products back to the quality they used to be.

This is the colour I am most excited for besides the nude. I like frosts and I have been wanting a plumy-black-red! Thanks for the review! I know I am going to buy it anyway as these are not uncomfortable for me and the colour is just so pretty!

This color suits you very much. It is a nice lipstick but it looks too much like how Mac Betty Oh, Oh, Oh looks on me so I wouldn´t buy it.

I have a question for Christine…

With all of the lipstick you have to swatch and test for longevity, how do you prevent your lips from getting dry and chapped? I can’t even wear lipstick once without having to go heavy on balm the next day. 🙁

This is really SAD, it looked so promising esp. from MAC’s swatch on-line! 🙁 I was hoping of a merlot color, not as glossy though, perhaps a matte. I love matte lippies. 🙂 Oh, well…def a pass for me!
