MAC Dare to Wear: Lipglasses Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Dare to Wear Lipglass
Lipglass: Wind Me Up, Bold & Brash, So Bad, Gimme That!, Dare to Dare, Ban This!

MAC Dare to Wear: Lipglasses

New and limited edition, MAC Dare to Wear Lipglasses ($18.00 for 0.17 oz.) are like more pigmented, more refined dazzleglasses.  They’re much smoother than dazzleglasses, even as they wear down–the shimmer is incredibly fine to the point where I couldn’t feel it at all when I smooshed my lips together.  These are tacky, though; they are not quite as sticky as traditional Lipglass, but my lips do stick a good bit when I press them together.  Like other MAC lip products, these have their signature vanilla scent as well.

The formula feels creamy, slick, and thin when worn.  It’s not a heavy or thick gloss–not like Lipglass in terms of texture at all.  It takes several passes to get enough product to cover the lips though; I found that not enough product was coming through the tube as I pulled out the wand.   The majority of these weren’t fully opaque; they were certainly close to it, but not quite there.  I do like that they’re a mix of shimmer and rich color, because it makes it a nice two-in-one product.  You don’t have to worry about using a separate lip brush to apply a light, shimmered gloss on top of your wicked pigmented lipstick with these.

When worn by itself, it wears well–I had three hours and going strong, and then I had a creamy pasta dish for lunch.  I’d say 40% made it through lunch — not bad.  You could get away without touching up, but a touch up would still be needed, ideally.

  • Wind Me Up is a coppery browned peach. It’s semi-opaque with a base color of semi-sheer peachy brown color and a high dosage of copper and gold shimmer that lends help to making it look more opaque. This is most flattering on warmer skin tones, since it has stronger orange and copper tones.
  • Bold & Brash is a bright red with fuchsia and ruby micro-shimmer. This is the most opaque shade of the six. I had trouble discerning whether it was a blue- or orange-based red, just because it seemed to change depending on the lighting. I think this is a red that will look good on a variety of skin tones.
  • So Bad is a medium-dark coral melon semi-sheer color base with multi-colored micro-shimmer with predominantly light pink particles. Overall, it’s semi-sheer to semi-opaque. I’d say this is the most wearable of the six.
  • Gimme That! is a brightened fuchsia with a hint of raspberry. It has lots of fuchsia and purple micro-shimmer. It applies nearly opaque.
  • Dare to Dare is a light medium pink semi-sheer color base with white and pink micro-shimmer to make it appear more opaque. This is a very wearable shade, but it is also a little blah. Why is it called Dare to Dare? It pulls a little cool, so it would naturally suit those with cooler undertones, but I think it will work on warmer skin tones, too.
  • Ban This! is a deep wine berry with violet and fuchsia micro-shimmer. It’s semi-opaque, and it has more of a stained look than the thicker, more opaque looks of the other shades.

Surprisingly, I really like Ban This! I just don’t know if I should buy these or save my money for Fab Feline. What do you this Christine?

Cheyenne Avatar

I am going to NOW get ‘So bad’ and ‘Dare to Wear’. Thank you so much! I was so unsure. I have never had any lipgloss from Mac, but it’s time to try one

Jywoi Avatar

I’m in love with So Bad, Gimme That!, Dare to Dare and Ban This!, what are you favourites?

Thank you so much for the swatches 🙂

sofia Avatar

WOW!!! Those are some vibrant colours…I don’t know if I have the guts to be a daredevil and try one of the bolder colours!!! I like Dare to Dare and Wind Me Up though!!!

Macaddict Avatar

Based on your swatches, I like Bold & Brash, Gimme That!, and Ban This!. The 3 other ones are not pigmented enough for me and god knows I already have about 100 lipglosses already so I probably have colors very similar to anyways…
I have been checking from time to time all day long to see if you had time to do the Dare to Dare l/g swatches! Thank you!
That’s the highlight of my day! 😀

Thank you so much for putting up these types of reviews! As frustrated as I am by the fact that Australia always seems to get MAC products 1-2 months AFTER America, at least these sorts of photos and reviews give me a chance to think about which products I’d want when they launch here 🙂 Especially helpful if it’s a popular launch, I can just hop online and click up what I want straight away, no time wasted on browsing and no chance of a product selling out before I can grab it 😉

Loving ‘So Bad’, ‘Gimme That’ and ‘Dare To Dare’ and wishing I could pull off ‘Ban This!’ or ‘Bold & Brash’ as they are such beautiful colours

Jennifer Avatar

Dang, now I want Bold and Brash and the last two….Too!
I already ordered “Gimmie that!” ….

Christine do you know if these will be on sale at Nordstroms.com?

Melissa (divinem) Avatar

Wow, those are crazy pigmented! Looks like they’re trying to compete with Illamasqua & OCC glosses. I wasn’t interested in anything from this collection until I saw these photos. Ban this interests me for sure. Love!

Jennifer A. Avatar

Are these samples? Or why are they filled unevenly? I think they’re all pretty and I can’t wait for the new Chanel pigmented glosses!

I went to Bloomie’s today to grab mine in “So Bad” and noticed the exact same thing when I pulled it out of the box at home- it had a gap with no product at the top of the tube. But, as soon as I pulled out the wand the excess gloss on the wand shaft actually perfectly filled up that gap in the top of the tube- so I think Christine is right it must be filled by volume and then the “filter” for the doe-foot at the top grabs the excess to make the tube look filled completely. I must say- Christine takes such lovely product pictures and does such an awesome job (I always trust her faves she is never wrong!) but these glosses are even more “color bling in yer FACE!” in person- these are really amazing, fun, bold colors and I can see why they are “Dare to Wear”. I wish I could afford them all! Christine you rock! I am orginally from Lake Forest lol- you are in Irvine right?

Janet Avatar

How does So Bad compare to Utterly Posh dazzleglass? Also, I really love how beautiful Chanel’s Dragon looks on you and was thinking of getting it until I saw Bold and Brash… are they even remotely comparable?

Jay Avatar

Would you say “So Bad” is a dupe for “Pink Grapefruit” lipglass? I’m always on the hunt for dupes, as none of my CCO’s ever have Pink Grapefruit in stock.

milly Avatar

Christine, which do you think would suit an NC25 skin tone better, Wind Me Up or So Bad? I can only order online.
Seeing these pics is making me want to buy them all 🙁

16Units2Go Avatar

Christine, you have the world’s greatest website! 😀 “Gimme That” intrigues me from this collection. Hesitant to buy because of your review, but if I end up with money to burn, I’ll get it just because it’s so pretty!

Melissa (divinem) Avatar

Oh, and I love me a doe foot applicator because I have small lips. I know I’m in the minority on that one, but it gives me more precision than a brush applicator.

DawnaldC Avatar

I stopped in at Nordies to preview these. I tried on 3 (Ban This, Gimme That, So Bad). While I was so taken in with the color, it took me awhile to notice that I really hated the texture. They are very tacky, and my lips felt really dry within a few minutes. They are way too dry to be considered sticky.

I then ventured to the counter that has the Tom Ford lipsticks. Of course, I wanted to try those on. I could barely get the Lipglass off of my lips and 5 hours later still have sparkles floating around. However, I am in seventh heaven after trying on TF’s Cherry Lush and Pure Pink (which is still going strong). LOVE THEM. I quickly decided that if I were in the market for lipgloss, I would rather spend $12 more for the opaque glosses from Guerlain or Chanel, OR just head straight back to the TF counter. So, nothing from this collection for me.

Kathryn Avatar

I am disappointed, in the promo pics the gloss looked creamy and opaque not glittery. Because MAC has already put out so many lip products with glitter and shimmer in them lateley I was really hoping for something more creamy. I was so excited to head out and buy them all after seeing the promo pics but now I know I can skip these.

Pang Avatar

OMG, they all look so nice on the pictures. I’m having a hard time deciding. I’m gonna have to play with them @ the MAC counter so I can figure which one(s) I really want to get. Do you know when they’re hitting the stores?

Angela0804 Avatar

I ordered ban this today online; however, I’m not liking the way it looks on your site. I may have to return this one. Does it make your lips look cracked irl, and is it difficult to apply? It looks blotchy for some reason.

Meesh Avatar

I think ‘so bad’ is really the only one I’d ever wear. Also, for such a long tube, the applicator seems very flimsy. Maybe it’s just me?!

Dusty Avatar

I thought “Dare to Dare” (which I also thought was a goofy name just in general) reminded me of a Pink Opal version of a lipgloss – I bought a back-up 🙂 I can see it looking really cool over a variety of liners and lipsticks 🙂

Tip: I normally don’t do this but with these I might, since they don’t pull out enough product with the appicator… You see that white plastic whatever-they’re-called at the opening of the tube? If you pop it out it will make the opening larger, allowing more product to come out at once. I’ve only ever done it with glosses that need to be dipped and re-dipped several times… But it works 🙂

Courtney Avatar

The more I look at these, the more I want! I hear they’re very pigmented and the colors really look fantastic. At first I just wanted bold & Brash, but now I definitely must also try on Dare to Dare, Gimmie That!, and Wind Me Up.

Can’t wait till I get off work in another 45 minutes so I can go play at the Mac counter!

Goldie Avatar

Dare to Dare looked so gorgeous on your lips, Christine.
I had to have it. I rushed out to buy it. However I was so dissapointed, because it turned out so different on my lips. The glitter ended up looking so blueish and neon. I think I may have to return it, boo hoo 🙁 Oh well, I wasn’t too crazy about the texture anyway. It gathered into a sticky film on the inner edge of my lips after a short while.

t_zwiggy Avatar

Love the color of So Bad and Dare to Dare. Can’t stand the glitter, though. I really like the brighter ones as well, but I can’t pull off colors like that. 🙁

Do you know if MAC (or any other brands) has any lip glosses that are similar to So Bad, but without the glitter?

Mika Avatar

Thanks for swatching, I so wanted these… But sadly tackiness + doe foot applicator + sparkles = definitely not me! They look gorgeous on you, though…

Rene Avatar

The only one I can wear is Ban This.. Wind Me Up &Gimme That will be returned as they look horrible on me. They look great on you though! I have learned that I can’t go just by swatches on someone else, I must try these things on lol

Elise Avatar

I cannot wear any pigmented lipstick right now, because I am on Accutane. A medication with a side effect that causes my lips to be constantly chapped, dry & flakey. Ewwww! So it has been lip balm & gloss for me.

And of course I am hopelessly stuck on Dazzle Glasses! Which of course have less than half the product and cost more! So when I swatched these, I had an “AH HAH!” moment! I will be able to coordinate these with Dazzles already in my collection. The DTW Glass colors sheer-out nicely and really pop with a matching Dazzle on top! Yippee!

I bought Ban This! Gimme That! & Wind Me Up!

Seriously! Try Funtabulous on top of Ban This! It is love! Peace!

Kitty Avatar

Hi Christine,

Colorwise, how do you think Gimme That compares to Show Orchid L/S? Is there enough difference between them for me to justify picking up Gimme That (even on my graduate student budget!)?

Thanks ^^

Jess Avatar

I went out to buy Ban This! and they gave me Dare to Dare by accident. It’s really pretty though, and I’ve never actually tried Ban This on my lips. Christine, do you think Ban This would be better with NW15 skin? I was only going to buy one and now I’m confused. 🙁

Rachaell Avatar

Hi! Do you find that Gimme That! looks like a glossy Show Orchild cuz I have that already and if so I’ll save some money. 🙂 Thanks!

Lacey J. Avatar

Ugh, I just got done ordering mac a few days back online and now I see these swatches. I have been looking for the perfecty orangish coral color lipgloss. I am trying to talk myself out of buying “so bad” as it is still available online. Who thinks this is a good orangy coral? Is it more orange or more coral? Should I bother if I can only see an online swatch?

I mean I love how it looks but I have much more pigmented lips so it may not look the same on me. If I do end up buying it I will be sad when it is discontinued so gosh knows I am probably going to buy two…

HELP!

Lacey J. Avatar

Also I have wanted to buy MACs Vegas Volt for a while because it is such a pretty orange coral color but unfortunately I found to my dismay I hate wearing lipstick. I only like lipgloss and balm… this would be my kinda “in between option” do you think it is a good option?

Tiffany S. Avatar

I have Bold & Brash, Dare to Dare, and Gimmie that and love them all! I wish these were permanent. I regret not getting Ban This! It’s a great fall color!
