MAC Bare My Soul Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC Bare My Soul Eyeshadow Quad
MAC Bare My Soul Eyeshadow Quad ($44.00 for 0.19 oz.) includes these shades: Romantico (light taupe bronze, Veluxe Pearl), Bare My Soul (frosted gold, Lustre), Friendly (deep bronze chocolate, Veluxe Pearl), and When in Rio (deep green with copper pearl, Frost). The quad will be available online on May 16th and in-stores May 23rd (of course, it usually is online earlier than the stated date). It is packaged in a matte bronze with a rubbery texture–if you’re familiar with NARS’ packaging, it’s very much like that, only bronze in color.
Romantico is a soft, medium-dark bown with a frosted finish and subtly warm, reddish undertones. It had nice color payoff and applied smoothly. Giorgio Armani Summer 2013 Eyeshadow #3 is warmer. Too Faced Hot Cocoa is lighter. NARS Flowers 3 is warmer. Milani Caramel Brown has a more metallic finish. MAC Buckwheat is darker. MAC Lie Low is more orange. MAC Sable is darker.
Bare My Soul is a gold-shimmered coppery brown with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good color payoff and applied smoothly when I used it on the lid. Wet ‘n’ Wild Sparkle ‘Til Morning #2 is very similar. Guerlain Calligraphy Eye & Lip #2 is slightly darker. Urban Decay Penny Lane is darker. Le Metier de Beaute Goldstone is more golden, brighter. bareMinerals Golden Iris has more of a satiny sheen.
Friendly is a rich, chocolatly brown with subtly warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had fantastic color payoff, and it applied incredibly smoothly, too. Inglot #421 is slightly more coppery. Laura Mercier Cedar is more matte. MAC Make Your Mark is not quite as intense. MAC Mulch is redder.
When in Rio is a deep, red-brown base with a greenish-teal sheen. It had good color payoff when layered, but it was a little on the drier side and slightly stiff when I tried blending it out on the lid. It’s workable, but it’s not as nice as Romantico or Friendly. Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone #8 has a much redder base. bareMinerals Mirage is browner. MAC Double Feature #5 #2 is similar in design but much redder in practice. Tarte Exquisite Emerlad is similar though not as intense. MAC Woodsmoke is bluer. Inglot #414 is greener. MAC Club would also be similar, though I think the duochrome is not quite as obvious (and also Blue Brown pigment).
Initially, it reminded me of the Burmese Beauty quad from a few years ago, but they’re definitely not one-for-one. Burmese Beauty had a more golden, rather than copper-toned, shade, but it did have a similarly duochrome blue-brown shade (Burmese Beauty). The other two eyeshadows are not similar to the other two found in this quad.
I liked the quad overall, but at this price point, I really wish When in Rio was softer, more pigmented, and more blendable.  In the world of MAC eyeshadow quads, this is certainly one of the better ones in the past few years.  I wore all four eyeshadows together yesterday, and I didn’t have any issues with creasing or fading after nine hours of wear (no primer).

I just may have to pick this one up.
I’ve stopped buying makeup for the sake of buying awhile ago, this is an example of why I don’t hoard makeup anymore. There is ZERO originality in this palette every single color can be duped or was in another palette. I can’t justify paying $44 dollars for different color packaging. *venting*
This quad has really captured my attention, mainly because the swatches are so nice! I also can’t dupe most of these shadows, except for When in Rio. I probably won’t get it though. You make a very good point, Christine – you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere.
So happy to see a MAC quad performing well! I’d love to see more of this quality! 🙂
Absolutely lovely! I think I might be getting it. Thanks Christine. =)
I personally will not be reaching for this quad, but happy to see MAC can do a palette right, but let’s face it, an all too rare occurrence. I have both Club and Blue Brown pigment–two of my favourite MAC eye products ever–so really do not have need for this palette with the other three shades looking very dupeable.
I’m really happy this quad has gotten an A- from you, Christine. That hasn’t happened in so long! 🙂 It’s one of my top picks, and because of your good review, I don’t have to cross it off my list.
Looks like a nice palette. I really like when in Rio! Such a special shade.
i wasn’t feeling this quad when i saw the promo images….but now after seeing your review and swatches….must have!
I really like this quad! These are the color I go for more on an everyday basis. And I’m glad MAC upped the quality here.
How does this compare to naked?
It doesn’t compare at all – Naked is mostly browns! This has a really green/blue kind of color so that alone makes it not like Naked. Plus, this has four eyeshadows and Naked has way more!
How does When in Rio compare to Club?
I listed it above, so this is just copied & pasted: “MAC Club would also be similar, though I think the duochrome is not quite as obvious (and also Blue Brown pigment).”
Definitely getting this quad! How would you compare Romantico and When in Rio to NARS Rajasthan duo? And Friendly to UD Smog?
Rajasthan is bluer, not as green! Smog is warmer 🙂
Ahhh! I was hoping this one would be a winner, the other quad seemed kind of dull to me but this one is gorgeous!
I have never wanted a MAC Quad before – but this one I love and want!
Will this be up on nordstroms also?
It will be at all MAC locations!
I actually really like this and I’m glad to see it’s good quality, although I do already have Burmese Beauty and I get what you mean about it being a bit “same-y”. The green *is* so similar and the rest of the colours are so dupeable that it’s probably not worth owning both.
My thoughts exactly ….
We already have it online in the UK. There was nothing new for about 1.5 months then boom all of the new collections landed.
The quads are £38 in the UK which is crazy. Chanel quads are the same price and I don’t think even that is justified.
REALLY? Ohh, that is bad. I mean, MAC is just not a luxury brand like Chanel – even if quality can be the same/better/worse.
I am sooo not crazy about the price increase… There are plenty of other excellent palettes for just under or just above $44…
Out of curiosity, though, how does When In Rio compare to MAC’s Club? I know Club is similar to the shade in the Wet n Wild palette, but is it closer to When In Rio?
Hi Estefania,
It’s listed in the post! 🙂 Here is the relevant portion: “MAC Club would also be similar, though I think the duochrome is not quite as obvious (and also Blue Brown pigment).”
Oh! I must’ve missed that… Thanks for pointing it out anyway! 🙂 I always rely on your reviews, so I really appreciate it!
Funny, I’ve been wearing the Burmese Beauty quad for the past couple days and I would agree that this quad is similar!
I wish I could just get Romantico as a single!!
Finally! I quad that actually had good color pay off! I will be getting this one for sure. I love the colors and they are all such wearable colors. I was thinking of getting the other quad, but this one seems to have better color payoff from swatches I have seen from other blogs. I love this one!
Does anyone know how When in Rio compare to UD Lounge?
I think Lounge is a bit warmer – not quite as green.
Looks so good on you!
Wow, When in Rio is extremely similar to Club in my opinion! I love Club though, so this quad may be something I’ll have to pick up. I love the colors together 🙂
I immediately thought of Club when I saw it too. 🙂 Looks quite different in the pan, but really close on the eye imo.
Well it’s nice to see a MAC quad that doesn’t suck, LOL! These don’t wow me though. They look not only dupeable, but dupeable with OTHER MAC shadows! Maybe not exactly 100% duped, but close enough to keep me from wanting to pay $44 to add this to my collection. Also since when are quads this pricey? lol. sheesh.
Once again, this palette seems autumnal to me and I’m in the mood for summer. It’s also very dupable.
This is the only quad I want, beautiful colors for Summer, can’t wait! Thank you Christine, btw how does When in Rio compare to Too Faced Label Whore, I hit pan on it from the holiday palettes. 🙂
I think it would be similar! 🙂
That’s a lovely quad.
A MAC quad worth getting? …Has hell froze over?
This quad is very cohesive, and the swatches look great, but it is far too warm for me (although I have close enough dupes for all of them in other palettes, LOL). I’m glad to see MAC upping the ante lately; perhaps they’ve been reading the feedback?
Looks so pretty! I would buy it but I think I have enough similar colors to where I can’t really justify the cost. When in Rio and Romanic are very nice tho!
I’m really saddened to see that Rio is actually just Club… I was hoping for perhaps a green base with a coppery duo instead of that muddy red-brown that gleams teal/green.
too many dupes available, i’ll save my $$…MAC’s runnin’ outta ideas, I guess!
Do you think this one could be similar to the whole Wet N Wild Comfort Zone palette? It seems like you could almost dupe the whole thing! If you use the butter color from the one side, and the browns, and then add in the duochrome from the other side? It’s actually how I usually use Comfort Zone!
Yes, I think there are definitely some similarities! You could definitely skip this if you had that 🙂
anyone know a method that i can depot these eyeshadows and still be able to use the quad and put other colours inside?? thanks!
The colors look pretty but if anyone who knows frost and pearls there not that great compared to mattes and satins.. hmm not sure how i like this
When in Rio reminds me of Oomph eyeshadow from MAC’s Mickey Contractor Collection.
I officially NEEEEED this… it sold out almost immediately online (big surprise – NOT!) So, it looks like I’ll be heading to my local MAC counter on the 23rd to pick it up!
Christine, do you think this palette will be wearable for cooler skin tones?
Yes!
Hi Christine how does when in rio compare to UD smoked palette in loaded
Loaded is darker and greener – it has no duochrome at all.
I am a little confused as to why you compared Romantico and Sable? They look nothing alike… I think Romantico is very similar to Patina though.
I can see the comparison. Like she said it is darker.
just picked this up last weekend. but i haven’t used it yet! i may do so tomorrow morning for work if i have enough time 🙂 for sure i’ll be using it over the weekend though!! btw this is my very first post on your blog Christine even though i’ve been lurking for a while 🙂
happy first comment, Rachel!! 🙂
