Guerlain Calligraphy Eye & Lip Palette
Full of Product and Quality
Guerlain Calligraphy Eye & Lip Palette ($79.00 for 0.35 oz.) consists of three eyeshadows, one eyeshadow/eyeliner (can be used wet or dry), two lipsticks, and two dual-ended brushes. The palette contains 0.19 oz. worth of eyeshadow and 0.16 oz. worth of lipstick. It’s almost the equivalent of four full-sized eyeshadows (average is 0.05 oz.) and about one and a half lipsticks (average is 0.10 oz.).
The first shade is a pale gold with a soft, frosted finish. It had nice color payoff, and it was very soft and smooth to apply. Cinderella Charming is very comparable. Tarina Tarantino Fantastical is not as yellow. Tarina Tarantino Dreamy is a bit browner. MAC Femme-fi is similar. MAC Nylon is yellower.
Below, the second shade is a light-medium copper orange with a frosted finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a soft, finely-milled texture that went on smoothly. Urban Decay Penny Lane is lighter, less orange. MAC Lantern Light has more red tones. MAC Chessa is more orange.
The third shade is a subdued taupe–a very gray-tinted brown–with a dark champagne shimmer-sheen. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft, smooth, and easy to apply to the lid. NARS Vent Glace is lighter. theBalm Selfish is darker, grayer. Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone is lighter.
The fourth shade is a dark black with a hint of brown. This shade can actually be used wet or dry. It has a matte finish, and it actually delivered quite a bit of color payoff–it was finely-milled and soft, but it was dry in a sense. It didn’t have a really soft, buttery feel, so there was no powderiness yet nice pigmentation. Estee Lauder Violet Underground has a similar colored black. Le Metier de Beaute Fin is darker, richer.
The first lipstick is a blue-based, medium red with a fair amount of brightness and a satiny finish–a little sheen and pearl but not frosted. It was rich in color, and it wore for seven hours, plus left a stain behind. Dior Marilyn is a smidgen darker. NARS Dragon Girl is more matte. NYX Chic Red is a touch darker.
The second lipstick is an orange-red–very tomato red–with a satiny sheen. It is also fully opaque on lips and wore for six and a half hours. There was a light stain left behind. Chanel Coromandel is more orange. Guerlani Genna is a little more orange-hued. Chanel Excessive is a smidgen brighter.
Overall, it’s a very fine palette; well-made with a sleek, glossy black packaging and includes high-quality eyeshadows and lipsticks that wear well. I think the shades are more dupeable than not, but they’re all really good. I didn’t have issues with any of them! When I wore the eyeshadows together, they lasted for eight hours without a primer and had no signs of creasing or fading. The lipsticks both wore for over six hours (not a total surprise–they are reds!) and weren’t drying.

That first lipstick looks VERY pink to me, not red. Yes this is nice but…. nrgh. Do I NEED to spend this much money for quality like this? I’m not convinced.
Again, I LOVE just one shade (the light taupe). Not enough to justify buying it when I hate the lip colors, and the other eyeshadows are pretty dupeable with something I already have.
I bought this palette unseen, and I’m so glad I did! I probably wouldn’t wear the copper-orange shade much on its own, but it looks like it would be very pretty to layer with the brown-black.
I really wish Guerlain would release more of these palettes, I also got a duty free-exclusive one that I adore.
Hello! Was your duty-free palette in the same type of packaging as this Liu palette?
The duty-free palette wasn’t in the same packaging as the Liu palette, much closer to the packaging they used for the Parure de Nuit from last year’s holiday. I found a review over on this blog if you’re curious => http://joeychong.wordpress.com/2012/01/12/guerlain-la-selection-couleur-makeup-palette/
Okay, it’s great. In Germany Guerlain costs a fortune and the colours never seemed outstanding to me so I never bought something. I would be tempted to get this because it’s very compact and handy, but it’s too expensive.
The second picture is great. You are a true spokeswoman for this brand!
Guerlain is super expensive but its cheaper in Germany than in the US!
Personally this is a super cute palette but I have a lot of similar colours so I’ll skip!
I think it´s more expensive in the USA because the dollar is below the Euro, at least for now. And the products are shipped from France so they are more expensive for sure. Germany is right next to France and has the same high priced Euro lol 😛 .
Great-looking palette, especially the lipsticks look amazing!
I saw it maybe one hour ago ! Yes it’s beautiful and classy but I definitely prefer the Dior, Chanel, YSL and Clarins Holiday collections and I focused on the 4 along with M.A.C Glamour Daze. Guerlain Liu Collection is pretty too, the 4 eyeshadows palette and the Rouges Automatiques Shine, I don’t like the nail polishes though ( what a cheap packaging ! ) and I didn’t see the Météorites.
This is fairly basic in terms of colors, but pretty and a nice option for people who want some basic shades all together.
This is a very minor quibble, but the taupe shadow pan appears to be set crookedly in the palette. I wouldn’t mind if it was from Wet n Wild but this is Guerlain.
I really like how you do your eye makeup and I do try to recreate it on my Asian crease-less eyes although I should know better by now.
Oh, man, I noticed that as well. I definitely think it’s more than a small quibble for something at this price point, though.
*swoons*
I’ve really been looking forward to this one! I hope it’ll be in the stores soon because I’m going to snatch it up for sure!
I’m just a bit bummed out that there isn’t a lid on the lip shades, but for everything in this palette I can live with that!
I have never once been tempted by a palette that featured a mix of lip and powder products until seeing this one. It really does seem so classy and perfect for the holidays. I don’t know… I think I might have to cave in and break with tradition for this beauty!
How terrible is it that one day I want to own one of Guerlain’s palettes just so I can have the joy of hauling that gorgeous packaging in and out of my purse?
This is actually a very useable palette, and the colors are right up my alley. If it wasn’t for that tomato red lipstick, I probably would consider going for it. 🙁 But I just know that I wouldn’t get the use I needed out of that shade to justify the price.
Looks great, but I pretty much have all these bases covered already.
This is so Beautiful!!!!
I feel like buying it right now …its irrational I just love it so much!
Also, an A+ rating, I love when products get A+ ratings
By the way you look beautiful in your pictures!
Oh my! It’s gotten such good scores and it looks great on you Christin! I was planning on getting a few pieces from the Dior holiday collection, now I’m tempted to review my purchases in order to add this palette in my list!
Bahahahaha! Just when I thought maybe you’d be skipping a review on this product, it finally pops up! I’m so stoked it got an A+! I actually bought this palette sans a review from you on it (which is something I rarely do) because I thought it looked too gorgeous to pass on. How fantastic that you deemed it worthy of that A+! I still haven’t used it but I’ll finally be breaking it in when I go out tonight. Thanks Christine 🙂
Ahh, how long have you had it? How could you resist not using it? 😛
This will probably make me sound insane but I have an unused Guerlain lipstick still on it´s package, sitting there for the last three months…lol maybe I will open it on my birthday even though it wasn´t bought as a birthday present? or maybe I won´t 😛 .
this is soooo lovely. it looks very similar to the dior night golds palette on-this has the advantage of two lipsticks, while the dior has 5 eyeshadows. which would you recommend based soley on the eyeshadow color/quality?
If you want something warm-toned, Dior; if you want something with more of a mix of warm/neutral, Guerlain 🙂
Looks like a nice holiday palette but the lipstick is a little too intense for me.
It’s gorgeous, but I’d be worried about the lipsticks getting gunky from the eyeshadows 🙁 Also I’d never wear either lipstick because I don’t really do reds. So I can safely pass on this, while still admiring it!
So far, I haven’t had any cross-contamination – I think because the eyeshadows don’t kick up excess powder, it’s not going to be as problematic as it could be!
I love the pinkish lipstick!
both reds are outstanding and the whole eye look is gorgeous! this palette is very well put together. if i didn’t already snag the eyeshadow quad and meteorites, i would’ve gotten this!
I lust after this in my soul. Even knowing it’s too warm for me can’t stop me from desiring it.
Both lipsticks are beautiful but eyeshadows are unexciting. I think every brand has eyeshadows in similar colors.
This is a BEAUTIFUL palette to create a classic, glamorous look. I love it, but it’s not for me.
The glow on that taupe is just NUTS! Too bad there’s not a single for it (I don’t think?), and that I just really, really detest palettes with creme or lip products next to powders. Sigh.
is the pale yellow glittery/shimmery? i see some spreckles of shimmer traveled.
great basic colors. not sure if i like the packaging
It’s not glittery, just a shimmer shade.
Wow. I can’t remember the last time I saw something given an A+ rating. I may have to check it out. I love the lipstick colors.
Nice! It’s so great to see a product that totally delivers! Out of my price range, but I’m really happy that there’s a company that presents a product that won’t make consumers regret parting with their hard-earned cash.
all of those colors look beautiful, separately and together. may need to put this on my christmas list lol.
The packaging is gorgeous, classy, elegant, travel friendly. The lipstick colors are ok and the eyeshadows are beautiful…however I don´t like palettes with mixed lipstiks/glosses and eyeshadows…they can turn into a mess, and for the price I would be heartbroken if that happened…so will have to pass on this 🙁 .
My thoughts exactly! They should’ve designed some kind of slear plastic lid thingy for the lipsticks 🙁 Otherrwise it’s beautiful!
I really just want that first lipstick.
This palette looks EXQUISITE. There are no words to describe how much I want it.
No offense but this palette is the ugliest combination of colors I’ve ever seen! *runs and hides*
I ordered this based on your review. I can’t wait to try it! Looks amazing. Guerlain makes such excellent quality products.
I hope you love it, Liza! xo
I just caved and bought this after a Bergdorf Guerlain counter person did my makeup – the lightest shade all over, the coppery in the corner, and the taupe in the crease. She then lined my eyes with the turquoise loose kohl, and oh my god, it was love. I thought the coppery shade would be a no-go on my very fair skin, but it was an amazing combination!
hey,
Just got this today,it is fabulous.I asked the MUA if the lipsticks were in the regular collection, apparently they are. These are Rouge automatique 123 and Kiss Kiss 523.
