MAC Avant Garnet & Dusty Grape Lipsticks Reviews & Swatches

MAC Avant Garnet Lipstick

Avant Garnet

MAC Avant Garnet Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a deep red with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied evenly and comfortably across my lips in a fluid stroke.

The consistency was slightly firmer in the tube, but it wasn’t stiff to use, and it had good adhesion for longer wear. This shade lasted well for six and a half hours and felt non-drying over time.

Formula Overview

MAC Lipstick comes in a variety of finishes, and the pigmentation and wear tend to be dependent on the finish. The sheer finishes, like Lustres, tend to wear for only a couple of hours and have sheer coverage (as designed) and are non-drying.

Some of the original Matte shades have a stiffer, drier formula, while newer ones have a more velvety, silicone-feel to them, and the latter are creamier, more comfortable to wear, and easier to apply, but most Matte shades are quite pigmented and long-wearing, though some are drying.

The Amplified and Satin finishes tend to have good pigmentation, lightly creamy to moderately creamy consistencies with a bit of shine, and moderate to long wear with deeper, richer shades wearing longer. The Frost and Metallic finishes have the most variance between shades with coverage ranging from semi-sheer to opaque with average wear and non-drying to slightly drying formulas. All MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

MAC Dusty Grape Lipstick

Dusty Grape

MAC Dusty Grape Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a deep burgundy with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied somewhat evenly, but it was more prone to catching on lip texture and made my lip lines more prominent as a result.

The texture was lightweight, thin without being clingy, and it felt more comfortable than it looked, though it was more non-drying than hydrating. It stayed on well for six hours and left a stain behind.

I love both, and, I have dupes. However the dupe I have for Avant Garnet is LE Velvet Jazz and by now I must say my track record with her lipsticks isn’t good, three of them have broken off, Velvet Ribbon just fell off at the base, OK it was my fault for having it in my pocket, and it was quite warm, but it fell off without me even screwing it fully up. I was angry at myself for having it in a pocket, but I have had other lipsticks laying around in my pockets often, and they have survived, maybe I’ve shortened their lives, but they haven’t broken off.
OK, sorry for the rant that had nothing to do with MAC at all. šŸ˜‰

Lol. This made me laugh. I have about 6 of the Lisa Eldridge lippies and 4 arrived broken. Brand new. Straight from the box on opening. Thought it was my luck but now I’m reading that you too experienced the same.

I have both of these Mac limited lipsticks and love both. Dusty grape is actually very nice and not as dry for me. I actually preferred the texture and consistency of the matte formula for dusty grape vs avant garnet.

Four of them arrived broken! That’s really bad luck, or there’s something making the lipsticks fragile just at the part where they leave the inner tube, I hope that makes sense.
I thought I was extremely heavy handed applying lipsticks until Velvet Ribbon just fell off due to it being warmed up.
I still have one intact matte one, Velvet Jazz, I’ll be so careful using it, The other ones I’ll put in some little container and use with a lip brush.
Did you get a refund or new lipsticks sent to you?
