MAC Artificially Wild Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

MAC Artificially Wild Lipsticks

In the upcoming MAC Artificially Wild Collection, it appears MAC has brought back some classic, 90s favorites for a limited time.

MAC Icon Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “frosted neutral beige [with a Frost finish].” It’s a cool-toned, taupe-brown with a frosted, metallic shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which went on fairly evenly. It wore well for four and a half hours, but it was little drying. It’s a more unique shade when I look through past lipsticks I’ve reviewed. Bobbi Brown Twilight Shimmer (6) (P, $25.00) is warmer, glossier. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Photo Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “golden brown [with a Satin finish].” It’s a medium-dark brown with warm, orange and red undertones and a satiny finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that went on evenly. The color lasted for five hours and was neither hydrating nor drying while worn. It is part of the permanent range. NARS Deborah (P, $32.00) Maybelline Maple Kiss (925) (P, $7.49) Maybelline Mochachino (P, $7.49) MAC Tabla (P, $16.00) MAC Photo (P, $16.00) See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Shitake Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep brown glaze [with a Glaze finish].” It’s a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage and applied evenly. The consistency had a moderate amount of slip and glided across the lips easily. It lasted for three hours on me. As far as I can tell, this is the discontinued Shitaki, but I have it as Shitaki from years ago, yet this one is labeled Shitake both on the bottom of the lipstick and in the press release. Chanel Icone (55) (P, $34.00) is lighter. Chanel Patchouli (LE, $34.00) is rosier. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Marion (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, more opaque. Bobbi Brown Sunset Beach (LE, $23.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Of all the lipsticks in the collection Ii like Shitake the best. Siss and Yash make me look like a cadaver. definitely will try it when released.

I went through so many tubes of Siss and Shitake in the 90’s. They are shades that look outstanding on complexions NC40 and darker. I’ll be picking up all these lipsticks in this collection.

Ao Avatar

Reminds me of the shades my mom used to wear back in the 90’s…
She used to always outline her lips with “spice.”

The correct spelling of the fungus is shitake, and the “ke” part is actually pronounced like kay not key. I guess MAC just wanted to fix the mistake this time.

I actually like all three, I think I’ll have to get either Icon or Shitake when these come out. But one thing I’m apparently going to have to buy is Maybelline Maple Kiss, because it’s been listed as a dupe for two lip colours I liked the look of this week.

I had an aunt who wore something very similar to Icon all the time in the 90’s… what a throwback! I didn’t expect to like these at all – as neither browns nor frosts typically do it for me – but they’re actually kind of intriguing!

I really like Shitake. Not sure how it would look on me (very pale)… but it might layer nicely over an orangish liner (like Mac chestnut), as an alternative to KVD’s Gothica (which I might return bc it was too glittery, although I liked the color). Is Shitake sheer enough to let a liner show through?

These lipsticks totally remind me of the 90s! I haven’t work frost ls since the 90s ended, but I previously swatched photo and I like it, but don’t think I could pull it off.

Dani Avatar

I actually like shitake! I was also too young in the 90’s to wear makeup, so I don’t have much to compare to all these browns. The first one is just too cool of a color for my tone but the second 2 are pretty!

Photo reminds me of Revlon’s Toast of New York. I think Cindy Crawford wore it in the print ads? I started wearing lipstick during that time, so I think this collection is great, for nostalgic reasons. Of course, I was in high school/college then, so my lipstick collection was limited to drugstore. (I was more of a L’oreal Real Raisin person myself.)

Shades like this didn’t work on me in the 90’s.. so I’m quite certain they won’t now. I’ll be trying to work the warmer lipstick trend this fall by going with a darker red with a bit of brown. I saw some comments about Siss and Shitake and I was laughing so hard because I tried to wear both and yeah, it was laughabl, particularly Siss: one of my biggest MAC misses of the 90’s.

I’m so psyched about Icon!! Ive been studying beauty blogs for the past month looking for a perfect shimmery warm grey, and someone recommended this. Of course it was limited edition from awhile back, so I almost caved and bought one for $40 on eBay. Now I can get it for the normal retail price lol

Do you think it compares to Soft Sable from that glitter and ice collection a few years back? it’s one of those shades, every time I wear it, I regret only buying one. So if it’s close-ish…. even better 🙂

This collection is going to kill my bank account lol

I haven’t had anything even close to these colors on my lips since my daughters were learning the alphabet. Now, I have an almost-one-year-old granddaughter and the browns are back! I really love the way Shitake looks on you. As for me, should I decide to pick up one of these, it seems that Icon would look best with my skin tone. The fact that it’s drying puts me off as I already have trouble keeping my lips moisturized.

I kind of like Icon, actually. It speaks to the ’80’s/’90’s youth in me, LOL! It might just be that I like the way it looks on you though – you have pretty pink lips (sorry, not trying to be creepy :-P), so the overall effect is kind of a pretty frosted lilac. On my colourless lips, I suspect it might look a little…’futuristic’, hehe!

Jules Avatar

Yay, MAC! After so many uninspiring products from them lately, they’ve come up with something fun and a bit different (even if two are re-launches).

I just hope everybody knows it’s pronounced “shih-TAH-ki” or there could be some red faces at the MAC counter 🙂

Helene Avatar

I had decided I would hate this collection. But, no, I actually like it.
I really like Icon and Shitake and I must try them out when/if they get here. I do think I’ll try Photo as well. I wore makeup in the 90s, but I never got into the brownish lips. I still have one or two reds with a lot of brown in them, They wppeared to be OK last year when I tessted all my lipsticks, Wonder if they still are…
I love how you rock these three colours. It might be your ability to make everything look so good that makes me want all the lipsticks I see 🙂

Hanna Avatar

I’m so excited for this collection! Definitely hoping brown lipstick gets more popular. I’m not very familiar with mac collections though, why do they promote an already permanent line item (like Photo) with the LE collection?

Jessica Avatar

Icoooonnn!!!!!

I just pulled my old tube from my B2M bag a week ago because I was craving some silver-taupe l/s for some reason. My tube is from 2001! Dear God! It smells and it applies like a jerk but I am keeping it for nostalgic reasons. I’m happy they have re-released so I can actually use it and not gag after swiping it on lol!

kellly Avatar

I’ve always had sort of a soft spot for browns, sepias and golden tan colors because they go well with my skin tone and coloring. I am hoping this collection isn’t going to cause a major budget meltdown!
