LORAC Unzipped Ocean Sunset Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Unzipped Ocean Sunset
LORAC Unzipped Ocean Sunset Eyeshadow Palette ($42.00 for 0.58 oz.) includes ten shades in hues of warm neutrals and a few pops of color. There were some nice shades in the palette but some duds, so it was a real mixed bag, which makes it hard to feel strongly either way.
If you’re someone who normally wears primer, I think it might be worth checking out if the colors appeal, but the formula seemed more prone to fading (both initially, almost as it “melted” on the lids as well as during wear). From my experience with LORAC’s formulas, the one in the Unzipped Sunset series seemed more like a hybrid between their Pro and Unzipped formula, as the Sunset palettes did not seem to have the same denseness (particularly in the shimmers) as the permanent Unzipped palettes. The mattes, however, were more substantial (less thin) compared to the Pro formula, which also meant less powderiness/sheering out during application.

Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl is a light, golden beige with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin. The texture was soft, smooth, and a touch dusty but did not kickup too much product in the pan. This shade lasted well for seven hours on me before fading.

Salt Water
Salt Water is a brighter, white gold with a greenish tint paired with a sparkling, metallic sheen. The sparkles in it were finer, but they were also loosely packed in the powder, so they did not translate much onto the lid (unless used with an adhesive base). It had semi-sheer coverage, which was buildable if applied with a dampened brush or over a tacky base. The texture was smooth, almost cream-like, and denser in the pan. The eyeshadow wore well for seven hours with slight fallout.

Ocean Floor
Ocean Floor is a medium-dark brown with warm, orange undertones and a pearly sheen. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied evenly and smoothly on the lid. The eyeshadow felt smooth, velvety, and not too soft or too firm in the pan, which made it easy to work with. It started to fade on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Horizon
Horizon is a light-medium, muted orange with warm undertones and a satin finish. It wasn’t quite matte, but it still worked and looked more like a matte eyeshadow in practice. The consistency was smooth, soft, and substantial enough to apply with opaque coverage without need for a primer or a base underneath it. This shade wore well for seven hours on me.

Sea Urchin
Sea Urchin is a muted, dark plum with warm undertones and a frost finish. The eyeshadow had good pigmentation, which was buildable, with a soft, slightly looser texture that felt a smidgen on the drier side but blened out well and did not sheer out too readily. It lasted well for seven hours on me before fading noticeably.

Bedrock
Bedrock is a muted, medium brown with warm, olive undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented and had a smooth, soft, and velvety texture that wasn’t too powdery nor was it too firmly packed in the pan. There was a substantial feel to it, so it did not sheer out immediately but was still easily blended along the edges. It started to fade on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Sundown
Sundown is a muted, medium mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was almost opaque in a single layer, and it was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The consistency was a touch powdery in the pan, but the color applied evenly and blended out with little effort on the lid. It wore well for seven hours on me.

Sandbar
Sandbar is a bright, medium copper with warm, orange undertones and a metallic finish. It had opaque color payoff that applied beautifully to bare skin–even, smooth, and still blendable. The downside was I felt like it never looked quite as metallic on the lid over time–within a few minutes of application, it looked more like a frost than a true metallic finish. The eyeshadow started to fade on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Stingray
Stingray is a faded navy blue with strong, cool undertones and a barely-there satin shimmer. The eyeshadow had good color coverage, though not quite opaque in a single layer, that applied evenly to bare skin. It blended out better than I expected, though it seemed to fade faster than other shades in the palette. I noticed that it had lost contrast within a few minutes of initial application, and then it was reduced to further noticeable fading by the fifth hour of wear.

A beautiful collection of colors…too bad they’re not long-lasting. I would also pass on this one because for me, these colors are similar to the Too Faced Sweet Peach palette, which I already have.
But there’s lots of prettiness going on in this Lorac palette, and I love the look you put together, Christine!
Thank you, Seraphine!
Is this really Limited Edition? What a bummer! 🙁
Yep!
I just don’t know. The shades certainly are interesting, but it seems to lack a cohesive theme or arrangement? At least to my eye, anyway. Might get if it goes on sale just for several of the more unique and unusual shades. Idk??
It might be to the eye, but I sort of see it as a warm and cool palette combined, so at a glance, I can see why it doesn’t immediately seem cohesive.
I appreciate the color selection here, but I think I have seen more exciting palettes from LORAC. Money saved!
Phew!
I’m a huge fan of Lorac’s original Unzipped palettes (both the regular and Gold version), those shadows are buttery smooth and very pigmented, will last +17 hrs on me with primer. But not a fan of the formula found in their Mega Pro palettes. So if these are like a combo of both formulas, that would explain the mixed bag here.
Me too — these do not feel quite the same to me.
Well, it’s muted, and it’s on the way. I think I’ll be fairly pleased (and less displeased than others) by this one.
Enjoy it, KJH!
The eyelook you did for this palette is just extraordinary!!! Really looks like a gorgeous ocean sunset and I’m sold even though the palette got an OK grade! I feel like those two matte mauve shades make this palette worth it as they’re good and more unique.
Thank you so much, Bonnie!
I really like the pink shades in this palette but I wish it scored better.
Me too 🙁 I had higher hopes!
I really like the colors! This looks like a nice palette to have for fall. I’m kinda shocked about the ratings though. Some of the shades don’t perform too well and it’s already a smaller palette. I’m normally a huge fan of Lorac’s shadows so I’m hoping they’re not messing with the formula these days
It’s not quite as good as past Unzipped palettes!
It is really a varied bag here – not only in terms of the ratings, but also the eclectic mix of shadows too.
It would have been more interesting if Salt Water was a genuine shade of sage and Stingray either a satin or a shimmer (but with much better quality).
Beautiful eye look once again Christine.
It is an interesting mix of shades – more unique for sure!
Thank you!
I LOVE this palette. I waited to see swatches here because I couldn’t decide between the three. I ended up going for ocean and mountain. The look you created is beautiful. I ended up throwing those matte colors (bedrock and horizon) in the crease and and lower lash then dabbling salt water over the lid with my finger. I absolutely love how salt water looks in the pan and even more so swatches. I don’t mind how sheer it is at all. I don’t get tons of time spend on my makeup and I was able to come up with something quick and a look that I really enjoyed.
