Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick
Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick

Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “shimmery navy.” It’s a deep, dark navy blue with a slight purple tint and fine, violet and midnight blue shimmer. It’s more like a mix of Illamasqua Kontrol (P, $24.00) and Illamasqua Disciple (P, $24.00) mixed together, as the latter is lighter and bluer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This color is off-the-charts awesome, if you can get behind non-traditional lip colors! It’s such a powerful color on–there’s just something about the richness and depth of it that makes it more wearable than you’d think. The texture of this was lightly creamy–the creamiest of all the shades I’ve swatched–and doesn’t tug or pull at the lip. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied fairly well and evenly. Sometimes, deeper shades like this can look splotchy or sheer applied, but this went on much more smoothly, though not perfectly. It’s a shade that I would likely apply with a lip brush, because it does seem to given a slightly rougher edge, rather than a really crisp one, when applied directly from the tube. It was neither drying nor hydrating, and the color lasted for nine hours (including through a meal).

I’m so glad you reviewed this one! It’s definitely the shade that most interested me, because I’ve always loved offbeat colours and I thought a deep indigo shade like this could be quite wearable. Glad to know it makes the grade in terms of formula as well!!

Yay it’s so great to finally see your review. I’ve been digging all kinds of reviews, swatches over all the places I can find, Instagram, Sephora reviews and Google Images. The greatest part is, the quality and texture doesn’t fail my expectation and it’s so rich and full-blown that no worries needed of the potential of being a cheap weirdo. I mean the color is so decent but darkly fun, like a gentleman with lots of puns. Anyway, thank you very much for the review. I kinda want to see you do a full-face gothic makeup if by any means possible. (It’s not my style, either. But I do want to try at least once to go with this lipstick)

MythKitty Avatar

Does this mean you won’t be reviewing it, Megan? 😉 Just kidding! I’m subscribed to your YouTube channel so I know you like more subtle makeup. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in this shade, either. I’m close to your age with an even fairer complexion. Maybe I can convince one of my 20-something daughters into wearing it and experience the color vicariously!

Julie Avatar

Hi! I’m curious why the longevity score is only a 9 when it lasted 9 hours(wow!!!). Seems like lipsticks that wear 6-7 hours are usually rated 9.5-10? Does it not live up to the product claims? Thanks!

Veronica Avatar

It’s gorgeous! Not sure if I can bring myself to spend $21 on something I probably wouldn’t wear too often, though. My job is lenient enough to let me get away with magenta and red lipstick, but I think they may draw the line at navy. I’m glad to see a brand go all out with a shade like this. If you’re doing nontraditional on the lips, it’s kind of a go big or go home kind of deal – something I don’t think all brands understand. (*COUGH*Givenchy*COUGH*)

Christine Avatar

Totally understand! It would be cool if they released two holiday mini kits/sets – maybe one with the non-traditional colors and one with more traditional ones!

But I am in complete agreement with you – if you’re going to go out of the box, DO IT. Full stop!

Veronica Avatar

I’m hoping for the same because she does release some good holiday kits. One with all the vampy shades would be covetous to say the least. 🙂

(I also owe Givenchy an apology – going back through the archives, I realized it was D&G who failed epically at the “Sicilian Jewels” collection. :P)

Man, what would you line your lips with? Would you even need to since it so matte/stiff? I’m strategizing how to wear it for when I inevitably purchase it. If only I hadn’t spent all my money on Urban Decay items this month! Curses! I guess it goes on the big, big TO BUY list.

Clare Avatar

A clear liner, like Lipstick Queen’s invisible liner? It’s now the only one I own/use. I go all over the edges of my lips, little bit outside, little bit inside, and lipstick doesn’t budge, even though I tend to get feathering pretty easily.

Wednesday Avatar

I would rock out the Illamasqua purple before I would reach for this navy, but I do appreciate the quality of the lipstick and think this looks amazing on.. someone other than me 😀

I do have a few of the more unusual shades on my radar screen. Being a bit of a chicken sh*t and waiting to see on others. The truth hurts, but there it is.

Lisa Avatar

Ok, beautiful shade, but since I don’t rock Goth or an alt kinda look, this would be Halloween only. At least I could do it without drying out my lips!

auxiliary beauty Avatar

Whoa, this is a stunning lipstick; I can’t wait to see it in person. Of all the unconventional lipstick colors out there, I think indigo has the best chance of breaking into the mainstream. It’s *almost* purple, and true purple has certainly become more common in the last few years!

ALEXANDRIA Avatar

This looks a little like Portland Black Lipstick Co. in Indigo Bridge! If you ever want to review some more unorthodox colors, look into PBLC! 😀

Denise Avatar

Yipes! Clearly I must be a traditional colour lipstick kind of gal because there is no way I could go out in public with that on my lips, unless it was to a fancy dress party going as a corpse. Sigh. Old age is catching up with me and turning me into a boring fart!

Nicole O. Avatar

i was hoping you’d review this particular shade & was holding off on purchasing it , but now i know i definitely NEED it !!!

i love that it can shift to a purple due to the fine shimmer .

nueyork Avatar

I love darker shades but it’s so hard to find them in a good formulation that doesn’t rub away or is messy! This formulation sounds amazing for these kinds of shades.

Marlene Avatar

Daaaang… Could someone remind me that I really can’t stand blue on me at all? Because I think I totally might get this. The bullet looks BEAUTIFUL, I’d buy this and stare at the sparkles for EVER. I’d get a print of that picture and hang it on my wall.

Helene Avatar

Oh, oh, oh!!! This is just too much! I LOVE it! I want it,
So, I’ve calmed down a bit. I generally don’t like blue, that is on me, I’ve no blue clothes at all as I think I look odd wearing blue. However this blue has a bit of purple shimmer that makes it just so lovely. I’d even say it’s a handsome colour.
I love how it looks on you, Christine.
I hope it’ll look OK on me as I must somehow get it.
I also want the Illamasqua Kontrol, anyone know hoe it applies, I have had very mixed results with Illamasqua, and it makes me so glad that Poe applied so flawlessly.

Helene Avatar

Thank you for pointing that out to me. Now I want them both!
I don’t have many lipsticks form Illamasqua, one is wonderful for some hours and then it cracks and both looks and feels very uncomfortable and dry. One is impossibel for me to get to apply evenly, it looks really good on the lower lip, and it hardly shows up at all on the upper, very strange, I think.

J Avatar

This is GORGEOUS. One of the workers at Sephora pulled out all the new shades for me today (I purchased three… sigh), but I was hesitant to get this one because I couldn’t swatch it, and honestly it’s a little out of my comfort zone. It looks so beautiful and surprisingly wearable tho! I definitely need it now.

michaela Avatar

I never knew how much I wanted a blue lipstick until I saw this!! I think this would be great for the Fall and Winter. Can’t wait to see the other colors!

LadyLiterary Avatar

I am absolutely in love with this shade! I love not traditional colours, the OCC Test Tube Packs have been my favourites to play with, including some really dark, vampy purples and blues. I am buying this shade on my next Sephora trip, no question. I am extremely fair skinned which just makes me want to add all the colours to my face.

LadyLiterary Avatar

I mixed Pretty Boy with Pris and RX and it created this really sexy bold bluish purple. It was vampy but still wearable. I bought all three of the Test Tube kits because I have zero self control when it comes to lippy 😛

Ginny Avatar

Dang, I might just go for it. I’d have to work up some nerve, but I think it would go well with my skin tone and hair (porcelain/golden auburn). Would be cool for photographs in fall/winter.

Tatiana Avatar

I’m so glad this got a good review from you. I tend to trust your reviews. I have been looking for a good deep navy or indigo lipstick for awhile and I’m so glad Kat Von D has one I can actually buy in a store. I’m excited. I also can’t wait for a review of the lip tar Vain from OCC. I’ll be waiting semi-patiently! (:

Poe is gorgeous. And a hot sell. I had to go to 3 Sephora stores in the Chicago area before I scored one. So far, I’ve purchased Poe, Homegirl and Wonderchilde…
I have more on my wish list. I’m not even halfway done

Paula Avatar

Such a gorgeous color! I’m ginger, so I think those very attention seeking colors works for me since I’m not afraid of people looking and everything.
I’m dying to see a swatch of Homegirl and Gothica (I think Gothica might be the exact shade of my hair! And I wanna see how that would look on me, maybe combine it with a line of black eyeliner, bronzer and nothing else)

Beth Avatar

Thanks for reviewing all of these! I was pumped for this new formula but it seems more miss than hit.

Also, where did you get those earrings?! They are so cute on you!

Porsche Avatar

I’ve just discovered your blog, and I’m so glad! Lol. I have Poe…and love it, and it’s definitely a color that’s sold out a lot. A perfect dupe for it, is the Coloured Raine lippie in the shade of Dragenista. Poe is a tad darker. And Melt DGAF is a good dupe as well.

Sheila Renee Avatar

Christine! I always refer to your swatches and reviews when I want a very precise and thorough review on products, and I have for YEARS. I was here looking for Poe, because all the interwebz offers a million different swatches, and I needed something true to colour. Naturally, I knew I would find it here, you never fail to deliver. I have never bothered to read the comments section, but I accidentally scrolled down quickly and noticed you reply to almost every single comment! As a busy beauty blogger, reviewing and creating all your posts, I was pleasantly surprised to see your responses to your viewers, it’s very sweet. Thanks for doing a fantastic job of keeping us privy to all the dirty/sparkly details of the all the products we obsess over! xo
