Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick
Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “shimmery navy.” It’s a deep, dark navy blue with a slight purple tint and fine, violet and midnight blue shimmer. It’s more like a mix of Illamasqua Kontrol (P, $24.00) and Illamasqua Disciple (P, $24.00) mixed together, as the latter is lighter and bluer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
This color is off-the-charts awesome, if you can get behind non-traditional lip colors! It’s such a powerful color on–there’s just something about the richness and depth of it that makes it more wearable than you’d think. The texture of this was lightly creamy–the creamiest of all the shades I’ve swatched–and doesn’t tug or pull at the lip. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied fairly well and evenly. Sometimes, deeper shades like this can look splotchy or sheer applied, but this went on much more smoothly, though not perfectly. It’s a shade that I would likely apply with a lip brush, because it does seem to given a slightly rougher edge, rather than a really crisp one, when applied directly from the tube. It was neither drying nor hydrating, and the color lasted for nine hours (including through a meal).

I’m so glad you reviewed this one! It’s definitely the shade that most interested me, because I’ve always loved offbeat colours and I thought a deep indigo shade like this could be quite wearable. Glad to know it makes the grade in terms of formula as well!!
It’s really quite amazing! Loved the color and shimmer in it.
Yay it’s so great to finally see your review. I’ve been digging all kinds of reviews, swatches over all the places I can find, Instagram, Sephora reviews and Google Images. The greatest part is, the quality and texture doesn’t fail my expectation and it’s so rich and full-blown that no worries needed of the potential of being a cheap weirdo. I mean the color is so decent but darkly fun, like a gentleman with lots of puns. Anyway, thank you very much for the review. I kinda want to see you do a full-face gothic makeup if by any means possible. (It’s not my style, either. But I do want to try at least once to go with this lipstick)
Definitely one of the best formulas I’ve tried for this type of shade!
This is gorgeous and unique. *makes grabby hands*
Agreed!
Wish I felt comfortable in it…so lovely…
Aww!
Does this mean you won’t be reviewing it, Megan? 😉 Just kidding! I’m subscribed to your YouTube channel so I know you like more subtle makeup. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in this shade, either. I’m close to your age with an even fairer complexion. Maybe I can convince one of my 20-something daughters into wearing it and experience the color vicariously!
Oh. That is to die for.
So rich!
That’s it. ThIs is the first Studded Kiss lipstick I’m getting once I have money. My wallet is going to hate me. :p
Enjoy 🙂
This is beautiful!
It is!
Orthose i’m not much of a non-traditional color kind of girl, this shade pulls me in like a magnet. Love!
Woohoo! 🙂
I love it!
Ooh! I didn’t think it would be up your alley, Erin! YAY!
Definitely staying on my wishlist!
Yay!
This looks amazing! I’m so glad it’s not stiff or patchy. I want it!
I was very surprised!
Hi! I’m curious why the longevity score is only a 9 when it lasted 9 hours(wow!!!). Seems like lipsticks that wear 6-7 hours are usually rated 9.5-10? Does it not live up to the product claims? Thanks!
Because Kat Von D says it’s a 10-hour formula, so though 9 is awesome relative to other lipsticks, they actually claim something specific (which is what I hold a brand to when they do so).
Thank you! That makes sense! Very tempted by this formula…the colors are amazing!
Wow, it’s amazingly wearable :-O Gorgeous.
Isn’t it? Total surprise.
This is such a cool color!
There’s something about the shimmer + deepness of the color!
The shade is so pretty and unique.. You can pull off each and every color! <3
Aw, thank you Pinjil!
This is awesome, Christine!! It’s so cool to see a non-artistry line release such an uncommon colour.
I hope we start seeing more lip colours like this in real life, too 🙂
It’s always nice to see shades like this gain a bit more accessibility – plenty of indie brands already have them (and more!) – but I love that more mainstream brands and retailers, like Sephora, will stock some!
Oh wow. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I am.
It is very cool!
This colour makes your teeth look SO white!! 🙂
Haha! I thought it did, too!
It’s gorgeous! Not sure if I can bring myself to spend $21 on something I probably wouldn’t wear too often, though. My job is lenient enough to let me get away with magenta and red lipstick, but I think they may draw the line at navy. I’m glad to see a brand go all out with a shade like this. If you’re doing nontraditional on the lips, it’s kind of a go big or go home kind of deal – something I don’t think all brands understand. (*COUGH*Givenchy*COUGH*)
Totally understand! It would be cool if they released two holiday mini kits/sets – maybe one with the non-traditional colors and one with more traditional ones!
But I am in complete agreement with you – if you’re going to go out of the box, DO IT. Full stop!
I’m hoping for the same because she does release some good holiday kits. One with all the vampy shades would be covetous to say the least. 🙂
(I also owe Givenchy an apology – going back through the archives, I realized it was D&G who failed epically at the “Sicilian Jewels” collection. :P)
Lovely! I dream of wearing colors like this. The black one too!
It’s a really fun shade to wear!
Man, what would you line your lips with? Would you even need to since it so matte/stiff? I’m strategizing how to wear it for when I inevitably purchase it. If only I hadn’t spent all my money on Urban Decay items this month! Curses! I guess it goes on the big, big TO BUY list.
I didn’t need a lip liner since it wore so long (the texture isn’t stiff, IMO!), but maybe a brand like Illamasqua or OCC would work for lip liner!
A clear liner, like Lipstick Queen’s invisible liner? It’s now the only one I own/use. I go all over the edges of my lips, little bit outside, little bit inside, and lipstick doesn’t budge, even though I tend to get feathering pretty easily.
This shade is just one of those shades that makes me go “Ooooooooooooooooh”. It’s stupidly gorgeous. *_*
It has so much character!
It does! I envision myself wearing it with pink-shimmered gloss on top.
I reeeeeaaaaaally hope I’m not allergic to her reformulated lippies because I need this color like I need air to breathe.
(I am allergic to her Foiled Love lippies, they made my lips peel and itch)
Fingers crossed!
Oh my gosh, the color of the bullet looks like a bluer Chanel Taboo nail polish, haha! It’s beautiful!
It totally has some similarities with that polish in the bottle!
Haha, yeah, that’s what I meant– I would buy both of those if they looked like they do in the bullet/bottle when they’re applied! Although they’re certainly pretty the way they are.
In surprised you gave it an A-. I didn’t like the application for this very much, very dry and didn’t apply evenly.
I didn’t have any issues with it being dry, actually. No tugging, dragging, etc.
I would rock out the Illamasqua purple before I would reach for this navy, but I do appreciate the quality of the lipstick and think this looks amazing on.. someone other than me 😀
I do have a few of the more unusual shades on my radar screen. Being a bit of a chicken sh*t and waiting to see on others. The truth hurts, but there it is.
Nothing wrong with that! 😀
Ok, beautiful shade, but since I don’t rock Goth or an alt kinda look, this would be Halloween only. At least I could do it without drying out my lips!
Hey, at least you can see the beauty in it, even if you know you wouldn’t wear it often 😀
Whoa, this is a stunning lipstick; I can’t wait to see it in person. Of all the unconventional lipstick colors out there, I think indigo has the best chance of breaking into the mainstream. It’s *almost* purple, and true purple has certainly become more common in the last few years!
It would be really cool if this became more common!
So badass!!
That’s what I kept thinking, LOL!
Be still my heart! *_*
I knew you’d love it! ;D
I can’t help it, I’m addicted to colour. The finish with the shimmer makes it look so cool.
It looks stunning on you! Wish I had the guts…
Baby steps 😉
omg i love this but i could never pull off blue
It’s not a color I’d say I “pull off” really, but it’s so cool that I don’t care!
*flailing arms*
Christine!! It’s blue! And they got it right!
*hyperventilates*
Somehow, some way, this lipstick will be mine. Thank you so much for reviewing this one!!!!
*runs around in circles, falls over, etc*
Right???? it’s love.
This one has made the short-list!
Woohoo!
Looks great on you! Mine is scheduled to be delivered Monday, can’t wait! What lip liner would you suggest for this shade?
I don’t know of any blue lip liners personally! I know some use eyeliners instead, though I don’t know what is/isn’t safe.
Gotta have it! Even if it ends up looking awful on me it’s just too fun to pass up!
lol!
This is amazing!
It is!
holy crap, this color is gorgeous
It’s stunning! 😀
This looks a little like Portland Black Lipstick Co. in Indigo Bridge! If you ever want to review some more unorthodox colors, look into PBLC! 😀
Thanks for the info!
Yipes! Clearly I must be a traditional colour lipstick kind of gal because there is no way I could go out in public with that on my lips, unless it was to a fancy dress party going as a corpse. Sigh. Old age is catching up with me and turning me into a boring fart!
I think not wearing it yourself is one thing and doesn’t make you boring – different than condemning it for existing, period – there are shades that I could never wear but know others will rock just beautifully!
I ordered Coven and I definitely have to get one of the other finishes because I was so bummed by how dry it feels. I love the color but it’s just not as awesome as I thought it would be. I definitely want Poe!!
Poe is definitely a lot creamier than Coven!
So ugly it’s pretty!
It’s very pretty!
i was hoping you’d review this particular shade & was holding off on purchasing it , but now i know i definitely NEED it !!!
i love that it can shift to a purple due to the fine shimmer .
oops , i forgot to ask what liner do you recommend pairing with this lippie ?
I don’t know of any offhand, but you might find something between OCC/Illamasqua.
Enjoy! 🙂
I love darker shades but it’s so hard to find them in a good formulation that doesn’t rub away or is messy! This formulation sounds amazing for these kinds of shades.
It has some transfer (definitely not kiss-proof), but it’s not messy!
Daaaang… Could someone remind me that I really can’t stand blue on me at all? Because I think I totally might get this. The bullet looks BEAUTIFUL, I’d buy this and stare at the sparkles for EVER. I’d get a print of that picture and hang it on my wall.
LOL! It’s really, really pretty. I think it’s a more wearable blue than others we have seen in general!
It’s pretty. It’s a shade that looks good with some shimmer.
It does!
Oh, oh, oh!!! This is just too much! I LOVE it! I want it,
So, I’ve calmed down a bit. I generally don’t like blue, that is on me, I’ve no blue clothes at all as I think I look odd wearing blue. However this blue has a bit of purple shimmer that makes it just so lovely. I’d even say it’s a handsome colour.
I love how it looks on you, Christine.
I hope it’ll look OK on me as I must somehow get it.
I also want the Illamasqua Kontrol, anyone know hoe it applies, I have had very mixed results with Illamasqua, and it makes me so glad that Poe applied so flawlessly.
I reviewed Kontrol – http://www.temptalia.com/product/illamasqua-lipstick/kontrol 🙂
Thank you for pointing that out to me. Now I want them both!
I don’t have many lipsticks form Illamasqua, one is wonderful for some hours and then it cracks and both looks and feels very uncomfortable and dry. One is impossibel for me to get to apply evenly, it looks really good on the lower lip, and it hardly shows up at all on the upper, very strange, I think.
There are definitely some really, REALLY dry/stiff Illamasqua lipsticks and others that are totally fine but still matte. It’s really odd.
This is GORGEOUS. One of the workers at Sephora pulled out all the new shades for me today (I purchased three… sigh), but I was hesitant to get this one because I couldn’t swatch it, and honestly it’s a little out of my comfort zone. It looks so beautiful and surprisingly wearable tho! I definitely need it now.
I can’t wait for you to try it, J!
You rock!
Thanks, Stacey!
I am definitely picking some of these up next week. You’re right this colour on the surface is something you’d consider costume-like perhaps but there is something really appealing about it. 🙂 Navy lipstick….who knew. 🙂
Hopefully it’ll be all the rage now 😉
I never knew how much I wanted a blue lipstick until I saw this!! I think this would be great for the Fall and Winter. Can’t wait to see the other colors!
I didn’t know how much I loved it until this one either!
Holy smoke. It’s not a colour I would wear, but I can totally see how awesome it is. It looks epic!
It is an awesome shade!
I am absolutely in love with this shade! I love not traditional colours, the OCC Test Tube Packs have been my favourites to play with, including some really dark, vampy purples and blues. I am buying this shade on my next Sephora trip, no question. I am extremely fair skinned which just makes me want to add all the colours to my face.
What’s been your favorite mix you’ve created?
I mixed Pretty Boy with Pris and RX and it created this really sexy bold bluish purple. It was vampy but still wearable. I bought all three of the Test Tube kits because I have zero self control when it comes to lippy 😛
This is such a fun shade.. and i liked that it is not flat but has a sparkly glam.!!! 🙂
Exactly!
Dang, I might just go for it. I’d have to work up some nerve, but I think it would go well with my skin tone and hair (porcelain/golden auburn). Would be cool for photographs in fall/winter.
You could rock it 😀
This is gorgeous!
Agreed!
I’m so glad this got a good review from you. I tend to trust your reviews. I have been looking for a good deep navy or indigo lipstick for awhile and I’m so glad Kat Von D has one I can actually buy in a store. I’m excited. I also can’t wait for a review of the lip tar Vain from OCC. I’ll be waiting semi-patiently! (:
Fingers crossed you like it when you get to see it, Tatiana! 🙂 So far, not all of the KVD lipsticks are created equal, but Poe is fab.
Poe is gorgeous. And a hot sell. I had to go to 3 Sephora stores in the Chicago area before I scored one. So far, I’ve purchased Poe, Homegirl and Wonderchilde…
I have more on my wish list. I’m not even halfway done
WOW! Three stores?? That’s crazy!
Do you happen to know if this is limited edition, Christine? 🙂
As far as I know, this is part of the permanent range.
I bought this today and am loving it!
Woohoo!!
Such a gorgeous color! I’m ginger, so I think those very attention seeking colors works for me since I’m not afraid of people looking and everything.
I’m dying to see a swatch of Homegirl and Gothica (I think Gothica might be the exact shade of my hair! And I wanna see how that would look on me, maybe combine it with a line of black eyeliner, bronzer and nothing else)
Thanks for reviewing all of these! I was pumped for this new formula but it seems more miss than hit.
Also, where did you get those earrings?! They are so cute on you!
Here you go, Beth! https://www.etsy.com/shop/bellaanelajewelry
I’ve just discovered your blog, and I’m so glad! Lol. I have Poe…and love it, and it’s definitely a color that’s sold out a lot. A perfect dupe for it, is the Coloured Raine lippie in the shade of Dragenista. Poe is a tad darker. And Melt DGAF is a good dupe as well.
Thanks, Porsche! 😀 Happy to have you here!
Christine! I always refer to your swatches and reviews when I want a very precise and thorough review on products, and I have for YEARS. I was here looking for Poe, because all the interwebz offers a million different swatches, and I needed something true to colour. Naturally, I knew I would find it here, you never fail to deliver. I have never bothered to read the comments section, but I accidentally scrolled down quickly and noticed you reply to almost every single comment! As a busy beauty blogger, reviewing and creating all your posts, I was pleasantly surprised to see your responses to your viewers, it’s very sweet. Thanks for doing a fantastic job of keeping us privy to all the dirty/sparkly details of the all the products we obsess over! xo
Thank you so much, Sheila! You are so sweet to say such kind words to me. 🙂 And my apologies for taking so long to reply to you!
