Kat Von D Homegirl Studded Kiss Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Kat Von D Homegirl Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Homegirl Studded Kiss Lipstick

Kat Von D Homegirl Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte black cherry.” It’s a deepened, muted dark burgundy-red with cool undertones and a matte finish. Kat Von D Motorhead (P, $21.00) is warmer. Bite Beauty Bordeaux (P, $28.00) is lighter, brighter, glossier. MAC Talk That Talk (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Soulfully Rich (P, $18.00) is darker, cooler-toned. MAC Prince Noir (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

A lot of the issues I had with Motorhead, I also had with Homegirl, unfortunately! While the formula is supposed to have “one-swipe payoff” with 10-hour wear, the color coverage really disappoints here with its semi-opaque and uneven coverage. The consistency of the lipstick is excruciatingly stiff and dry, which makes it tug a lot on the lips, and the color gets distributed in patches. As it has a thin, dry texture, it doesn’t build well on itself and creates patchy color that is darker in some places and lighter in others. The color wears for seven and a half hours and does leave a noticeable stain behind, but it is pure misery to wear it, as my lips were borderline bleeding after wearing this. I’ve been spreading out the testing of these shades with more hydrating formulas in-between to avoid fully drying my lips out, but my lips couldn’t escape this one.

I’ve had this shade in the original formula for several years, and it’s still creamy, buttery, & smooth. I can’t speak for wear-time, as I constantly remove/reapply, but otherwise it’s an incredible product.

I keep saying this, but if it’s not broken, don’t “fix” it!

KJH Avatar

exactly! when they never restocked + shades became unavailable, i kind of thought that they were on a redo. what a shame! maybe it’ll turn out like New Coke: they’ll revert to the original, which was clearly better. (I have only 3, but they’re fine) One can hope. Agree w/ Xamyx: it wasn’t broken, so why fix it? The answer is probably cost. Usually is. Jack the price + cheapen the ingredients = get a better margin. except when we listen to Christine, + rule them out, thank god. I so wanted to get some of the originals.

I gave it an F when I bought it too :(. Although, it looks more like the MAC lipstick Media on me! Media is a million times more comfortable.. Back to Sephora you go Homegirl!

YIKES!! Christine are you just gonna set these on fire when you are finished reviewing them lol? Hopefully you can send the losers back cause ick!!

Quinn Avatar

YEESH! This sounds like it felt as awful as it looked! Your poor lips! Any ideas of what you’ll use to recover the moisture you lost from wearing this? Any specific products? Bless you for reviewing this, it sounds like it was quite a struggle, Christine.

Christine Avatar

Hi Quinn,

My lips are in good shape, so I just apply lip balm at bed and it’s usually fine 🙂 I alternate what I test when I encounter a formula that is more drying or harder to wear, so I can test something more hydrating for the next day or so as well.

Wow. These lipsticks have been so disappointing. Shame because that color is so pretty. But ugh they sound so painful. My lips are having sympathy dryness!

O_O good lord, yet another tube I had a good experience with that you hated! (My only other purchase was Slayer, which was like a B+ for me.) The color also shows up entirely different on me, which is…a little concerning. On me it’s like a fairly dark, berry-leaning purple.
The color and formula should be true across every tube of a particular shade of lipstick, regardless of the brand. This kind of formula inconsistency, especially after all the hype leading up to the Studded Kiss release, is SERIOUSLY inexcusable. I’m SO sorry your lips have had to put up with all this madness! Believe me when I say all your readers appreciate you for your hard work!

I had to go back through the archive because I thought you had already reviewed this shade, but it was Motorhead! Lol I don’t know if it’s because of your skintone but they look pretty similar on your lips. Do you give them another try after the first impression? Because most of them looked like any other new lipstick I get from what you said. I have very dry lips and most of my lipsticks behave like that when they’re new or when I wear them after a long time, they tug and it’s even kinda painful to apply them. But when I work a bit more with them, they go smooth and it seems like they never stopped being creamy. This usually happens with the most pigmented shades I have!

Christine Avatar

It’s very rare that I’ve encountered a product that that does that, to be honest. All of the swatches you see are generally first time wearing it – but I swatch on skin first, which always wears away any initial layer, and then I apply on lips for photos. I don’t actually wear for testing longevity at that point but at some future date, so it’s really the second time I’ve applied it to lips that I am testing for wear.

Kat Von D must be reading some of these reviews. I wonder if she’ll reformulate since there are so many duds. She has a reputation to live up to.

I’ve seen three bad reviews for this color in as many days. I don’t understand why the dark reds are so hard for this line to pull off.

Karen Avatar

Hi Christine, I feel so sad about this line of lipsticks, I couldn’t tell you how excited I was when I first heard of these new lipsticks coming from Kat Von D! Now I’m just so disappointed!
On a side note, why do you think it is that none of my comments that I write ever show up here once I post them??? This is starting to make me feel so discouraged about commenting :(.

Christine Avatar

Hi Karen,

I’m not sure what you mean by your comments not showing up! I have about 450 in the queue right now so I am behind, so that might be why, but otherwise they should go through? I’ve replied to four or five of your comments in the last couple of days!

Karen Avatar

Thank you for your reply, you are right, I see them now. Sorry for not being patient, I know how busy you are!!! I had been thinking that it was something that I was doing wrong to be the reason!

Irene Avatar

I’ve started clicking on your Kat Von D lipstick reviews just for a laugh to see what awful rating each one gets. Seriously, how could most of them be SO bad? Your poor lips! Such a shame too, because some colors are really pretty.

Reiko Avatar

Is this formula even drier than Ruby Woo’s? I actually really enjoy Ruby Woo’s formula but this looks a lot patchier.

Can you rank Motorhead, Homegirl, and Talk That Talk in order of least to most dry?

Elena Avatar

I’m loving it for all the wrong reasons. It’s true grunge in a tube. Uncomfortable, un-pretty in a conventional sense, patchy and giving off some major “don’t give a s#$” vibes. I think I’m rather amused by its middle finger approach to mainstream makeup. Might get this rebel just for kicks and nostalgia.

But I’m sorry you had to suffer through testing it. You do go above and beyond.

Nicole O. Avatar

damn it . such a disappointment .

i’ve heard from other people that homegirl in the painted love formula was much better than this one .

wish i picked it up before that line was discontinued .

why do companies ruin good things ?!!! 🙁

Sophia B. Avatar

wow, it looks like dry, caked on blood. yugh! and from your description of it, that looks about right. It looks incredibly painful to wear. 🙁 you’re a trooper!

Helene Avatar

It’s bad when even the swatch is that uneven. Such a pity when the colour is so gorgeous and edgy. I’ve thried a few really drying lipsticks, but nothing that made me feel as uncomfortabel as this one meade you.
I’m still thinking about trying to get Poe, as it’s so beautiful, and a real winner in this collection.
Thanks for reviewing these, and I hope the last one will be better.

I bought Motorhead in July, right after it came out. Even after noticing how difficult it was to apply and how patchy it was, I snatched it up because I knew it would sell out. Big mistake! It sat unused until last weekend when I saw your F rating of the product. Since I had yet to experience its dreadful wear, I decided that my money would be better spent on an OCC lip tar (which is my favorite cosmetic product ever)! And, well, that was my first time returning something to Sephora. So much for trying something new. 😉 Thanks for the honest review of these, Christine!

Elizabeth Avatar

Oh Christine! I was looking forward to the launch of these lipsticks, but I have seen how painfully you have tried to make them work. You have far more patience than I, and thanks for your reviews. I am just going to pass on this whole collection. If it weren’t for your reviews, I would have purchased a few, and been sorely disappointed. I think this collection has been one big bomb. I do have a few of Kat Von D’s other formula, and I like those lipsticks quite well. What was Sephora thinking?
