Kat Von D Hellbent Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Hellbent Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as “matte crimson red.” It’s a medium-dark, bright-but-not-neon red with cool, blue undertones and a matte finish. MAC Ruby (LE, $16.00) is glossier, warmer. Too Faced Melted Ruby (P, $21.00) is glossier. Chanel La Precieuse (317) (LE, $34.00) is similar. MAC Glam (DC, $16.00) is pinker, brighter. MAC RiRi Woo (LE, $16.00) is more matte. NYX Chic Red (P, $4.00) is darker. NARS Dragon Girl (P, $25.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Ronnie Red (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC MAC Red (P, $16.00) is similar. Dior Marilyn (LE, $36.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches /

The consistency of Hellbent is slightly dry and stiff, but I was able to still get it to apply evenly, and the color payoff didn’t suffer either. It had fully opaque color coverage that really clings and stays on lips for hours and hours. This is a shade that lasted for eight hours and left a stain that persisted for another hour or so. It was lightly drying, but it looks more drying than it actually felt while worn. It faded fairly evenly for me, and I didn’t have any issues with it feathering on me, but it is a color that is best applied with a lip brush for crisper edges as the drier texture made it difficult to get clean lines straight from the tube.

It’s a pretty red! I’ll give it that.
It is a nice shade of red!
At least it’s better than the other shades, but for $21 I’d rather just shell out a few extra dollars for the NARS, y’know? I’m one of those people who uses their lip brush very sparingly, so having to carry one around with me to keep the edges neat is a no-go no matter how pretty the color is. I like to swipe and go. (I’m one of those weird people who makes more errors using a brush than the tube, anyway! I save them for glosses or the vampiest of vamp shades.)
I prefer from the tube, too, since for the most part, if it’s a good lipstick, it usually applies fine from the tube!
Pretty! Looks like a very wearable red.
I think it is!
It looks uncomfortable to wear. :/
It looks more uncomfortable than it actually was.
The colour is actually really Ruby Woo-esque! So pretty on you but definitely looks dry..
Very similar to Ruby Woo!
Thank goodness this performed better than the last couple shades. The color is too gorgeous! It’s so bright and bold. I just love it!
Glad ya liked it, Fancie!
I like this one, it’s among my favorite colors from the range.
Yay!
I think this shade is easily dupeable in better formulas.
It is!
I was excited for this range of lipsticks until I saw so many not make the mark. I actually like this color
I was hopeful for the range when it first launched!
I love this color on you! Might not be the best formula but the shade is so flattering…what you meant about the blue not orange based reds…
Thanks, Megan!
It’s so beautiful red but texture seem too dry for my lip, I think RiRi and MAC Red are still winner in my list of best red lipstick
Good picks!
I’m usually a total chanel rouge allure girl, but this looks fabulous! Maybe I should change my habits.. hehe.
If you love Rouge Allure, I think you’ll dislike these :/
I just saw the comment from the other Veronica above and spent a while trying to figure out if I typed that while being sleepy or if it’s just the same name, haha.
It seems like every time I see a review for this line, I sort of cross my fingers and hope this color has a good enough formula to convince me to buy. Its such a bummer that the vibrant and pastel matte shades are so uncomfortable, since it’s pretty easy to find a nice, bright red, even if the tube isn’t as neat.
I agree — a matte red is wayyy easy to find compared to some of the other shades in the line!
It’s beautiful ❤️ I just have so many reds 🙁 I’m on a no buy till mac rocky horror
Stay strong! xo
I like this one. In fact I like it so much I have two of the dupes, MAC Red and MAC Ruby. 🙂
Haha! You are covered 😉
Lovely, bright red. Glad to see one of the mattes get a good grade. Too bad it’s not the most unique color of the bunch. For the price, I think I’d just go for a dupe.
True enough! At least as a more basic color, it was done… better than the others.
I’m glad this one turned out well (for this line anyway, LOL), because if they’d managed to ‘F’ a classic blue red then…well, there wouldn’t be enough sad trombones in the world…
I think there are definitely other brands’ versions I’d go for first, but this is a nice colour 😉 It’s pleasant for me to see a blue red after all those warm reds in the NARS range (even if those are better lipsticks overall)!
I feel like a lot of reds wear pretty long, so I’d opt for a more comfortable formula overall.
Very pretty red. Since I don’t use a lip brush, I’ll stick with NARS. It does look dry. But, at least it performed better than others in the line.
Good idea 🙂
There’s something about this shade that makes it look a bit…cheap? Not in a trashy way, but like a really inexpensive/low-quality way. In fact, I’ve seen $2 DS brands look more luxurious, more saturated. The actual color is very pretty, and the subtlety makes it wearable for everyday, but if the pigmentation, or “weight” of the lipstick were richer/heavier, it’d be much better!
It might just be that ultra matte finish that never really flatters lips up-close!
Christine, how would you say this compares to NARS Red Square? Slightly more pink? I like this color. Thanks for the review – it’s a nice red on you.
I don’t think I have Red Square! It’s not ringing any bells…
Nice red, not my thing.
Totally understand!
It is a gorgeous Red… looks much brighter on ur lips than the tube!! 🙂
It does! 🙂
The shade is lovely!!
It is!
