Kat Von D Chula Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “rich, warm sienna.” It’s a muted, medium-dark coppery-red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had very nearly opaque color coverage with a lightly creamy consistency that applied with smooth, even color without tugging on the lips. The color lasted for eight hours and felt drying after four and a half hours of wear. Marc Jacobs Beauty Rei of Light (212) (P, $30.00) is lighter (95% similar). KVD Beauty Santa Sangre (P, $20.00) is darker, more muted, less glossy (90% similar). Urban Decay Temper (DC, $22.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). NARS Joyous Red (DC, $28.00)(90% similar). NARS Golshan (P, $25.00) is darker (95% similar). Estee Lauder Emotional (140) (P, $32.00) is darker, brighter, glossier (90% similar). NARS Intrigue (P, $26.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). NARS Banned Red (DC, $28.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop TGIF (LE, $7.00) is darker (90% similar). ColourPop Poison (P, $7.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). KVD Beauty Project Chimps (LE, $20.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). NARS Just Push Play (P, $26.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Halo Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “neon clementine.” It’s a brightened, medium orange with fine, lighter orange pearl that gives it a frosted matte finish. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that delivered even, smooth coverage without pulling on the lips. It felt drying after five hours of wear, but it lasted for seven before I removed it. NARS Timanfaya (P, $25.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Milani Sweet Nectar (P, $5.49) is less shimmery, darker, glossier (85% similar). KVD Beauty A-Go-Go (P, $20.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). NARS Geraldine (P, $34.00) is less shimmery, glossier (85% similar). MAC Morange (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker, glossier (85% similar). Illamasqua Soaked (P, $26.00) is less shimmery, darker, glossier (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Solo Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “metallic gold-kissed tangerine.” It’s a light-medium, yellowed orange with gold pearl and a frosted, matte finish. It is much lighter than Halo but shares the same type of finish. This shade had more shimmer in it, and you can feel the texture of the shimmer when applying and if you press your lips together. It had mostly opaque pigmentation, while the lipstick had a light creaminess so it glided across the lips but didn’t feel clingy. The color wore for six and a half hours but was moderately drying after three hours of wear. MAC Banana Muffins (LE, $17.50) is glossier (90% similar). MAC Sounds Like Noise (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Fenty Beauty Saw-C (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Forbidden Sunrise (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter (85% similar). MAC Tangerine Dream (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Propa Beauty Made It (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, more muted (85% similar). Ciate Topaz (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Maybelline Pure Gold (P, $7.49) is more shimmery, more muted, less pigmented (80% similar). Urban Decay California Honey (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (80% similar). Anastasia Guava (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (80% similar). Paul and Joe Beaute Once Upon a Time (081) (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, lighter, more muted (80% similar). FORMULA SUMMARY | Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to have “bold color” with “long-lasting wear and luxe comfort.” I reviewed several of these shades when they were first released, and a lot of them were so dry that they were stiff to the point of dragging, tugging, and were nearly painful to apply, though not all. I was completely surprised by the recent release of new shades (all permanent), as many of them were surprisingly creamy, comfortable to apply, and really felt like a major departure from a lot of the ones I had tried from the initial release.

I liked the look of these in your quick look swatches but I was a bit unsure because I remember quite a few of the original range being disasters. Good to hear this batch at least is good!
I don’t normally like orangey-reds, but Chula looks so good on you! Solo looks gorgeous too and it’s a pretty unique colour though definitely not one I could pull off.

Wow, I have NARS Golshan, and it’s a brick red, doesn’t look anything like Chula, which looks more like a reddish orange. Chula looks like it’s a wearable orange for me. I can’t pull off the neon clememntine and metallic tangerine shades, but for those who can, I’m glad she has more unique colors in this collection. Hey Christine, for today’s posting on the Estee Lauder lipsticks, there’s no comment box available, and it says “this post is closed for comments”

I tend to sort of mentally darken/de-yellow this site’s pictures (of reds, especially). I think it’s a your-monitor-might-vary situation. Everything always looks several shades lighter/yellower on my phone, for sure!

Also, of course, it might be an actual skin tone dependent thing — I’m porcelain pale and Golshan (which I love) looks almost burgundy brick on me in real life — though it photographs more like Christine’s pictures.

Monitor variation is the bane of my existence, as well as whatever settings someone sets (like brightness/contrast) (even with something like a laptop, viewing angle + ambient light makes a HUGE impact on how a shade looks). Every month or so, I check color across my monitor, my iPhone, my husband’s iPhone/iPad/MacBook, and two laptops. And they are never in agreement. The only monitor I fuss with is my desktop, and I try to get some happy medium between iPhone/MacBook/default setting laptop. I learned that there it’s worse to actually set my own monitor perfectly, because it only matters what everyone else is seeing, LOL.

I’ve tried explaining to people that the way color “works” in our eyes/brains means there IS no such thing as a perfect representation — no single “this is the ACTUAL color” answer.

I somewhat frequently buy makeup online, without seeing it in person first — and I’ve been known on a few occasions to borrow my boyfriend’s computer monitor as one more data point in determining what the heck the product is going to look like! “Hang on, honey, I just need to compare this blush on two screens…”

He’s a patient man. 🙂

Haha! It is pretty crazy how our perception of color changes very, very easily. A red can seem neutral, or even warm, but put it next to a very warm-toned red and it will seem cooler. Even just swatching a gray eyeshadow next to a warmer gold can really change-up the perception of undertone in the gray shade. I know when I’m editing a lot of photos, I constantly have to regularly refocus and look at grays to “reset” my perception.

Yay! I know the last ones scored low… I bought two of those, Lovecraft is rather dry but Archangel is velvety. Can’t wait to grab Chula.

Although Chula is the most obviously “me” of these colors, I have enough dupes (we don’t need to discuss how many…) that it would have to be special in the formula, indeed, to interest me.

But those two orange frosted matte colors are definitely cool! I like frosted matte finishes and usually it’s done with a cooler/blue toned effect, so this is a really intriguing departure.

Chula just blew me away! So GORGEOUS! Then again, it’s a type of color I am drawn to considering I already have MAC Lady Danger, and I fully intend on getting VG I in September. I know VG I is somewhat darker, but seems to have that same vibe.
Thankfully, I have a great Halo dupe in Morange.
I don’t think I could pull off a Solo pale orange though, but that’s really a beautiful shade for those who can!

Chula is so pretty!!! I’m drawn to colors like this, but when I wear them I feel they are too much for me. How does this compare to MAC Chili? That’s one that I loved in the store, but not one me.

doroffee Avatar

I am so jelous of you, you can pull these gorgeous yellowy colors off… unlike me… they look like as if they were photoshopped on me…

I love everything about Solo! Orange looks good with my skintone, so I bet frosted orange-y gold-ish would be great, too… maybe. It doesn’t hurt to try, right?!
