Kat Von D Agatha Studded Kiss Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Agatha Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Agatha Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte pale peach nude.” It’s a light, peach with warm undertones and a hint of pink. It had a totally matte finish. MAC What’s Haute? (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Fleur d’Coral (LE, $16.00) is sheerer. Marc Jacobs Beauty Pout (142) (LE, $30.00) is sheerer. MAC Strip Poker (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Woodrose (LE, $16.00) is sheerer. Maybelline Blushing Beige (915) (P, $7.49) is similar. Maybelline Bare All (910) (P, $7.49) is a touch lighter. MAC Pret-a-Pretty (LE, $17.00) is lighter. MAC Myth (P, $16.00) is pinker, lighter. MAC Innocence Beware (LE, $16.00) is pinker. MAC Crème d’Nude (P, $16.00) is sheerer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
This is easily one of the worst shades I’ve tried from the Studded Kiss formula. It’s incredibly dry in texture, so from the tube, the color is stiff and tugs on lips a lot. The result is patchy, uneven color coverage that looked streaky–yet there’s no slip in the formula at all. It was extremely uncomfortable to wear, as it clinged, pulled into lip lines, and dehydrated my lips within the first two hours of wear. It wore for almost five hours, but it was so painful to wear by the end.

Oh, jeez, Christine! OUCH! Your poor lips. That looks SO painful. I never thought I’d see something with less alip than most of Melt’s products, but holy wow that just screams pain. I hope you have a chance to give your lips a little rest after this. Thank you for warning us, though I hate that doing so resulted in lip pain for you.
Kind of the name of the game, I guess! Luckily, most products aren’t this bad.
Slip** haha not alip.
I can see the pain and sadness in your face because of this lipstick lol. Such a shame. It’s gorgeous in the tube.
I don’t know why it was soooo dry!
Agatha (from the old line) was never a color I could wear….it washed me out (that dead or zombie look…not my best). Thus, I wasn’t tempted to order this shade.
Seems the formula varies widely among the shades…right…some have gotten A ratings and yet this one is an F?
So many lipsticks….
Yes, the formula has a fair amount of inconsistency 🙁
I guess it’s the wide array of finishes that makes it so inconsistent, but you’d think a nude wouldn’t be so hard to get right? I’m still looking for my HG nude in terms of shade/finish though 😉
It could just be the pigments. Nudes need a lot of white, which is quite chalky. It’s so hard to find a nude that feels and looks good. The slippery ones still don’t have a good feel, mostly.
I’m really sad to see these lipsticks getting such bad reviews. When you first posted the collection I got so excited as the shades and packaging were so beautiful. I had such high hopes. I don’t think I’ve seen one shade get a “A” rating yet.
It’s tough – they put some tall claims on the product as well that will make it hard for even decent to good shades to get to an A.
That’s awful..
It was disappointing!
Wow. This LOOKS painful. You’re one dedicated makeup warrior, Christine – thanks for enduring on our behalf!
It was, unfortunately!
This whole line really seems like a letdown. :/
I’ve liked a few shades, though a few have been disappointing!
I think its because they are so matte and mattes are harder to work with, especially the pale ones. The sparkly ones I have from this line are way easier to apply.
Oh that’s so horrible. You should take a break!
No such thing as a break!
OMG It looks like plain concealer on the lips! Btw there are some concealers that are more mosturizing than this :/ it almost hurts my lips looking at it
Aww!
Soo sad. You thing they would try to reformulate this shade if it’s that bad. Sephora what are you doing. lol
And this IS a reformulation on the one before, lol!
Evolved from Satin the Chalk texture. 😉
I’ve got this and Noble (and a few of the others) and they definitely take some work!
But I love the payoff- pale matte nude mod lips. I’ve been applying VERY lightly and using my fingers to smooth. Applying like regular lipstick looks like crap. And I always reapply lipsticks every 3-4 hours no matter, I haven’t found them drying in that time frame. Way way fussy, but worth it for me 🙂
I tried using my fingers to blend/smooth, but no luck for me!
Sometimes the color really is worth the extra work!
Judging by the rating, I guess I would get the same effect with less effort by just using a concealer.
This color has never been a favorite of mine, since it washes me out- but I’m eyeing Lolita and hoping it will be better. Eagerly waiting to see it pop up here as a review. Your posts are always so great!
Sorry, I don’t think I have Lolita!
I actually love Agatha! I’ll admit it’s very high maintenance and some days I just totally skip wearing it if my lips are even remotely dry, but on “good lip” days, I love it. I have to blend it around the edges of my lips with my fingers to get it to look good. It’s definitely not just a “throw on and go” type product.
I tried using my fingers to blend it (hoping the warmth would help), but it didn’t help to even it out at all for me, unfortunately!
Just my personal opinion but I don’t think this sort of colour is flattering on anyone, unless you really want to look sick (to be able to skip out on work or a social obligation you’re not looking forward to!).
I think with a really dark, smoky eye, it works, but it can be a color that is more dependent on what else you wear as well!
Or if you are into a 60’s Mod look…which I very much am 🙂
I love pale nudes, and yes, they do take careful attention to what else is worn. My eyes are what I typically want to have as a focal point, so I don’t want my lips to compete. I also tend to do a neutral, light blush, that looks “natural”, and I make sure I contour/highlight, which is why finding awesome contour products is so important to me.
I love this kind of colors to do the “ulzzang” lip look, which relies on a really pale nude and a bold lip tint for just the center of the lips 🙂 it looks pretty cool, actually, but I wouldn’t buy this lipstick at all.
I generally despise nudes, but I tried this on at Sephora today and surprisingly it did not look terrible! It goes fairly well with a heavy eye look, but is probably not suited to everyday wear.
I love intense nudes for when I do a very dark smokey eye, but you definitely have to find the right undertone for your skin and have the right features to make it work. This peachier shade wouldn’t work for me even if it wasn’t a bad product, but I do use NARS Madere often enough to justify it’s place in my collection.
Eek! Poor thing, that you had to go through that!
No sweat!
Yikes!
Sad times!
I am so disappointed that this shade is a failure because it’s probably the only product I have ever seen that has my name in it.
AWW 🙁
I have no idea why brands can’t figure out how to do a good matte nude. Something in the pigment? NARS Madere is my jam, so this would be an easy pass even if it wasn’t an F-grade cosmetic, but it’s a shame for those who like their peachier shades.
Madere applies SO much better in comparison, too, lol!
Going to check out Madere, thanks!
NARS Madere has been on my radar for a while, but I’ve never pulled the trigger! Of course now that the Audacious line is out… It looks like my next “priority” will be lip products!
I winced when I scrolled to the lip swatch! >.<
lol! aww!
Your poor lips! Eeek! Thanks for saving ours!
No prob 😉
wow such a pretty color maybe if u mix it with a lipgloss
Maybe!
That closeup… yikes

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words!
oh noooooo. The reviews on this formula just get worse & worse! I’m so sad, I went from wanting to order 5-7 of them to not sure if I’ll buy another (I own Poe).
Poe was so great – started off on a good note but so far… not ending that way.
YIkes! Christine, that looks terribly painful! Did KVD perform quality control and checks on all the lipsticks, I wonder, given the vast variation in the product quality!
I don’t know what’s up – some are LOVING, some are hating!
OMG that looks like glue rubbed on your lips!
LOL! That would be painful!
I should be happy that this review just saved me money because I was eyeing Agatha at Sephora… but I was really hoping it would get a good review! These lipsticks looked so promising but the Studded Kiss formula seems to be pretty hit-and-miss so far.
I’ve definitely had better luck with the shimmery shades than the mattes so far!
I’ve been seeing a lot of reviews saying Agatha and Motorhead are the worst of the bunch. This looks so dry and chalky. Ew!
At least some consistency in which ones are bad…
Oh no! Your lips actually hurt mine! I had to quickly put some balm on my lips. Most lip products look great on your beautiful lips. This looks like slightly tinted zinc oxide I remember seeing at the beach when I was a child. Thanks you for going through such torture for us!
It’s SO dry!
I had my eye on this one a while back, but I think I’ll skip this one! It’s probably a tad too warm anyway, and I have far too many nudes that are far less finicky to spend this kind of money… Besides, there are a few NARS Audacious nudes I’m contemplating, as well as the Maybelline “dupe”!
This is sooo much work, and even then, it’s not great.
Ouch! That’s a really rough lip swatch. The quality really seems to vary with this line. I hope there aren’t more shades that perform like this
It does!
My lips look dry and chapped even with hydrating lipsticks on them, so this is a big NO NO.
Oh, definitely! Stay away, lol!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a lipstick featured on your website that photographes THAT poorly. It doesn’t only look positively awful, but incredibly painful as well.
I think an Illamasqua one did once, lol!
It does look incredibly dry and uneven on the lips! What a shame because this would have made such a nice nude.
Such a bummer!
I got a Kat Von D lipstick sample that looks just like this. I tried it on once and immediately took it off. I have never been able to get Kat Von D makeup to work out for me. Maybe it is just the few things I have tried. I had purchased the Kat Von D Beethoven palette a while back and it arrived broken and the swatches I took of the surivors were horribly pigmented, powdery, and very, very patchy. It looks like you had the same kind of unfortunate experience with this lipstick.
A couple of the lipsticks have been nice, but several have been misses!
I feel sorry for you Christine for having wasted money on this 😐 it’s such a bummer buying something and having it be such a disappointment..!
I had such high hopes for this new Kat von D range of lipsticks 🙁
Me too! So sad.
I love Kat Von D make-up and I especially love a pretty nude lip! Thanks for the post:)
Sure thing, Tracy!
Yikes, this lipstick definitely looks painful to wear! I appreciate your suffering to bring us excellent reviews, but I hope you gave your poor lips a break after this one!
LOL! No rest for the wicked!
Ye Gods!
First, I’m so sorry that you had two F’s in one day (I suspect that’s not necessarily the timespan within which you tested them, but still – two Fs is just sad!), and that you had to put this product on your person at all! You are, as others have said, a trooper, and we appreciate it a lot!
When I saw the score, I actually kind of scrolled down with my fingers over my eyes. When I got to the lip swatch I was all ‘Is that…toothpaste on her lips?’. 🙁
It could have been an April Fool’s joke, LOL!
This is one of my best friends every day lipsticks, it looks amazing on her and somehow not this dry at all.
However, on me it gives me serious corpse mouth…
Your friend is so lucky!
yikes..hmmm I think chalk would look better than this lipstick…
You still look beautiful though!
🙂 Thank you!
