Kat Von D Agatha Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte pale peach nude.” It’s a light, peach with warm undertones and a hint of pink. It had a totally matte finish. MAC What’s Haute? (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Fleur d’Coral (LE, $16.00) is sheerer. Marc Jacobs Beauty Pout (142) (LE, $30.00) is sheerer. MAC Strip Poker (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Woodrose (LE, $16.00) is sheerer. Maybelline Blushing Beige (915) (P, $7.49) is similar. Maybelline Bare All (910) (P, $7.49) is a touch lighter. MAC Pret-a-Pretty (LE, $17.00) is lighter. MAC Myth (P, $16.00) is pinker, lighter. MAC Innocence Beware (LE, $16.00) is pinker. MAC Crème d’Nude (P, $16.00) is sheerer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This is easily one of the worst shades I’ve tried from the Studded Kiss formula. It’s incredibly dry in texture, so from the tube, the color is stiff and tugs on lips a lot. The result is patchy, uneven color coverage that looked streaky–yet there’s no slip in the formula at all. It was extremely uncomfortable to wear, as it clinged, pulled into lip lines, and dehydrated my lips within the first two hours of wear. It wore for almost five hours, but it was so painful to wear by the end.

Oh, jeez, Christine! OUCH! Your poor lips. That looks SO painful. I never thought I’d see something with less alip than most of Melt’s products, but holy wow that just screams pain. I hope you have a chance to give your lips a little rest after this. Thank you for warning us, though I hate that doing so resulted in lip pain for you.

Agatha (from the old line) was never a color I could wear….it washed me out (that dead or zombie look…not my best). Thus, I wasn’t tempted to order this shade.
Seems the formula varies widely among the shades…right…some have gotten A ratings and yet this one is an F?
So many lipsticks….

It could just be the pigments. Nudes need a lot of white, which is quite chalky. It’s so hard to find a nude that feels and looks good. The slippery ones still don’t have a good feel, mostly.

OMG It looks like plain concealer on the lips! Btw there are some concealers that are more mosturizing than this :/ it almost hurts my lips looking at it

I’ve got this and Noble (and a few of the others) and they definitely take some work!
But I love the payoff- pale matte nude mod lips. I’ve been applying VERY lightly and using my fingers to smooth. Applying like regular lipstick looks like crap. And I always reapply lipsticks every 3-4 hours no matter, I haven’t found them drying in that time frame. Way way fussy, but worth it for me 🙂

This color has never been a favorite of mine, since it washes me out- but I’m eyeing Lolita and hoping it will be better. Eagerly waiting to see it pop up here as a review. Your posts are always so great!

I actually love Agatha! I’ll admit it’s very high maintenance and some days I just totally skip wearing it if my lips are even remotely dry, but on “good lip” days, I love it. I have to blend it around the edges of my lips with my fingers to get it to look good. It’s definitely not just a “throw on and go” type product.

I love pale nudes, and yes, they do take careful attention to what else is worn. My eyes are what I typically want to have as a focal point, so I don’t want my lips to compete. I also tend to do a neutral, light blush, that looks “natural”, and I make sure I contour/highlight, which is why finding awesome contour products is so important to me.

I love this kind of colors to do the “ulzzang” lip look, which relies on a really pale nude and a bold lip tint for just the center of the lips 🙂 it looks pretty cool, actually, but I wouldn’t buy this lipstick at all.

I generally despise nudes, but I tried this on at Sephora today and surprisingly it did not look terrible! It goes fairly well with a heavy eye look, but is probably not suited to everyday wear.

Veronica Avatar

I love intense nudes for when I do a very dark smokey eye, but you definitely have to find the right undertone for your skin and have the right features to make it work. This peachier shade wouldn’t work for me even if it wasn’t a bad product, but I do use NARS Madere often enough to justify it’s place in my collection.

Veronica Avatar

I have no idea why brands can’t figure out how to do a good matte nude. Something in the pigment? NARS Madere is my jam, so this would be an easy pass even if it wasn’t an F-grade cosmetic, but it’s a shame for those who like their peachier shades.

xamyx Avatar

NARS Madere has been on my radar for a while, but I’ve never pulled the trigger! Of course now that the Audacious line is out… It looks like my next “priority” will be lip products!

Aditi Avatar

YIkes! Christine, that looks terribly painful! Did KVD perform quality control and checks on all the lipsticks, I wonder, given the vast variation in the product quality!

SC Avatar

I should be happy that this review just saved me money because I was eyeing Agatha at Sephora… but I was really hoping it would get a good review! These lipsticks looked so promising but the Studded Kiss formula seems to be pretty hit-and-miss so far.

Jan Kelley Avatar

Oh no! Your lips actually hurt mine! I had to quickly put some balm on my lips. Most lip products look great on your beautiful lips. This looks like slightly tinted zinc oxide I remember seeing at the beach when I was a child. Thanks you for going through such torture for us!

xamyx Avatar

I had my eye on this one a while back, but I think I’ll skip this one! It’s probably a tad too warm anyway, and I have far too many nudes that are far less finicky to spend this kind of money… Besides, there are a few NARS Audacious nudes I’m contemplating, as well as the Maybelline “dupe”!

Anne Avatar

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a lipstick featured on your website that photographes THAT poorly. It doesn’t only look positively awful, but incredibly painful as well.

Samantha Avatar

I got a Kat Von D lipstick sample that looks just like this. I tried it on once and immediately took it off. I have never been able to get Kat Von D makeup to work out for me. Maybe it is just the few things I have tried. I had purchased the Kat Von D Beethoven palette a while back and it arrived broken and the swatches I took of the surivors were horribly pigmented, powdery, and very, very patchy. It looks like you had the same kind of unfortunate experience with this lipstick.

Ye Gods!

First, I’m so sorry that you had two F’s in one day (I suspect that’s not necessarily the timespan within which you tested them, but still – two Fs is just sad!), and that you had to put this product on your person at all! You are, as others have said, a trooper, and we appreciate it a lot!

When I saw the score, I actually kind of scrolled down with my fingers over my eyes. When I got to the lip swatch I was all ‘Is that…toothpaste on her lips?’. 🙁

Hanna Avatar

This is one of my best friends every day lipsticks, it looks amazing on her and somehow not this dry at all.

However, on me it gives me serious corpse mouth…
