Gucci Potent Violet & Crushed Coral Vibrant Demi-Glaze Lip Lacquers Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Gucci Potent Demi-Glaze Lip lacquer
Gucci Vibrant Demi-Glaze Lip lacquer ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a gloss with “intense color” and a “demi-glaze finish.” It is “packed with pigment,” “non-sticky”, hydrating, and scented with the brand’s “Blue Chocolate” fragrance. They also say “intense, saturated pigments.” I make a point to reiterate just how many ways Gucci called this a pigmented gloss, because you’ll see one gloss is nowhere near pigmented, and the other is some pigmentation but isn’t opaque. The gloss itself is mostly non-sticky–I get a little tackiness towards the last hour of wear–and has a lightweight, creamy, comfortable consistency with a fair amount of slip. It’s hydrating while on, but it does give me the same soapy taste while I wear it that I had with the lipsticks. I found the scent to be less intense than the lipsticks but still noticeable applied (not just in the tube). If brands want to have a single gloss formula with various intensities, all I’d like to see is the usage of shade descriptions like “sheer violet” and “opaque violet.”
Gucci Potent Violet Vibrant Demi-Glaze Lip lacquer ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a sheer, pink-lavender base with iridescent shimmer. The thinner texture of the gloss made it so I could feel some of the shimmer in it, though it wasn’t too noticeable. The color itself was sheer, and it wore well for two and a half hours. This was one of the most disappointing products that I bought from the new line. NARS Easy Lover (P, $26.00) is lighter, pinker. Shiseido Nebula (VI207) (P, $25.00) is purpler. L’Oreal Pucker-Up Pink (LE, $7.99) is lighter. Revlon Pinkissimo (P, $7.99) is brighter, pinker. Dior Dolly Pink (453) (P, $29.50) is pinker. Urban Decay Trashed (P, $19.00) is brighter. MAC Asian Butterfly (LE, $19.00) is similar. MAC Perky (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Gucci Crushed Coral Vibrant Demi-Glaze Lip lacquer ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a brightened, coral-red with a subtle gold shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage but a fair amount of the natural lip color comes through. There’s a little bit of settling, but it isn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. It lasted for three hours on me and was lightly hydrating and comfortable to wear. Dior Rose Tricheuse (669) (LE, $35.00) is darker, redder. Hourglass Muse (P, $28.00) is brighter, more opaque. MAC Berry Bold (LE, $20.00) is brighter. MAC Cheerful (P, $22.00) is lighter. NARS Paris Follies (LE, $26.00) is pinker. Revlon Kiss Me Coral (P, $7.99) is slightly darker. Revlon Papaya (P, $7.49) is pinker. MAC Knockout (LE, $15.00) is darker. MAC Eclectic Edge (LE, $15.00) is more orange. MAC Ablaze (LE, $15.00) is brighter. Guerlain Candy Stripe (P, $30.00) is similar. Chanel Calypso (LE, $29.50) is similar. Burberry Brick Red (P, $27.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Oh wow, certainly not what I was expecting from Potent Violet… Crushed Coral looks alright though, I really like the color and I actually like that it’s a tad sheer.
So sheer!
That first one LOOKS like you were swatching a MAC Dazzleglasses. Side note: I’m like the ONLY person I know who loves those. I don’t care how much product they have in the tube or how gritty they are… they’re PRETTY! Haha! I haven’t seen MAC do a limited edition Dazzleglass in YEARS it seems. Probably not as on trend anymore but I’d still love to see more of them 🙂
LOL! Do you like the SUPER Dazzleglasses?
When I want my pretty sparkle, I go Bobbi Brown High Shimmer. Like Dazzleglass but better for me!
Don’t hate me but I know you love those BB ones and a some other folks I know do too… and I don’t have any! EEP! I should probably fix that sometime huh?
Worth at least trying if you like sparkle 😉
Nothing to see here, move along… Too bad that one is such a dud it looked like it had potential!
I know! 🙁
I completely agree with you – why call something pigmented when it’s clearly not? I’m kind of over this Gucci collection to be honest.
It’s like they took great pains to let you know it was a pigmented gloss, so it was such a letdown!
ugh Potent Violet looks like a huge miss to me 🙁 I’m already not lipgloss kind of girl (but sometimes I still cant help it I still buy more lol) but this is a pass. thanks for saving me money Christine! 😀
No problem, Maya!
Hi Christine, So sad to see Potent Violet get such a low grade. It looks so pretty on you I happen to like both of the shades. Very pretty. Maybe Potent Violet would perform better over a matte lipstick similar in shade but just to add shine and a bit of shimmer?
It’s a pretty shade, but if I had known it was sheer, I would have passed right along (it’s an easy shade to dupe, since it is so sheer!).
Blue Chocolate? What does that even smell like? Doesn’t sound good 🙂
To me, it’s like sweet vanilla and then generic perfume-y-ness.
Awww, I’m so disappointed that these glosses are so crummy!
I’m gonna pass right now & go after more shadows. You look fab tho Christine- perfecto!
Thank you, Trish! 🙂
What a crying shame! The potent violet looks so promising in the container but so Meh! on your lips.
Come on Gucci! You are a high end company. If you say opaque then give us opaque!
Exactly!
Those colors look beautiful on you! I purchased the dark romance lip lacquer and it actually turned out more opaque than the shades you have shown but it could be because it’s a darker color, however I feel the same about the soapy taste. I love love love the way it wore and the gorgeous color but I just can’t get past the taste, it was like putting perfume on my lips. Sadly I won’t purchase the lip products again because of it. I also bought the autumn fire pallette which I haven’t opened to try yet but I hope it’s more promising than the lip products.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed the taste 🙁
Hm, I find the sparkle in Potent Violet very pretty in the close up shots, but it certainly wouldn’t convince me to abandon Revlon’s Sugar Violet 😉 Neither of these is really making my heart race, though. I wish companies would actually communicate between the marekting department and the production department. That way there would be fewer apparently misleading and disappointing product descriptions!
Haha! It would be nice if companies would match their claims to their product better!
to me, Potent Violet looks like a lip gloss you could buy at Clare’s. It doesn’t even look like a name brand drugstore lip gloss.
That’s the problem with sheerer glosses – it is tough to make them seem luxurious.
They looked so pretty in the tube though! How disappointing. That eyeshadow in the top right corner though…I need that! Give it to me! lol XP
Haha!
Not a great product from Gucci – one would expect better than this. Oh well, I will save my money and buy the Nars Femme Fleur instead.
There’s always something on the horizon to tempt you!
The violet-toned one reminds me of one of the YSL golden glosses, except the YSL one applies much more like what you see in the tube. If you were looking for something along those lines, I’d highly recommend that one.
Thank you for the rec, Kate!
Potent Violet looks jus like a mac dazzleglass
They’re definitely similar!
The violet looks worse than a cheap lipgloss. The coral doesn’t look better than a cheap lipgloss. Soap taste is an instant “no.” How disappointing.
Not that I was likely to buy a $32 lipgloss, anyway.
The taste was a deal-breaker for me, unfortunately!
Potent Violet looks soooo pretty in the tube. Sigh. Thanks for saving me $$.
The name “Demi-Glaze” seems to be at odds with the description. By the name alone I would think it to be between sheer and opaque.
The “Demi-Glaze” seems to be in reference to the shine level! 🙂
Very disappointing. For the money and the name I expect much more.
I think they should live up to their claims at this price for sure!
I bought quite a stash of Gucci makeup and I am pleased with everything except the mascara. It’s fine but it irritates my eyes by the end of the day. I am super allergic to Armani’s Eyes to Kill. I can’t even apply it without tearing up and have to remove it immediately. I am very happy with my Gucci eyeshadows, blushes, and lipsticks and glosses. I think their taste is pretty minimal which is good because I hate a strong or perfumed taste and forget about mint (toothpaste) taste in gloss, yuck. I don’t taste any soapiness like you do, Christine. Guess it’s just different for different people. I’m sorry you don’t like yours but I guess that’s just the way it goes. We both love Rouge G by Guerlain so let’s hope they come out with more colors for Christmas!
Happy to hear you’re loving almost everything you bought, Mimi!
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one in regards to Armani’s Eyes to Kill! I bought that and a Chanel one during Nordstrom’s buy 2 get 1 free and I thought it was because they were old, but both bothered my eyes like crazy!
There is only one new Rouge G for Holliday 2014. It is called Rouge Parade. It’s red and it comes in a colored case to match the lipstick shade. There are also two Gloss D’Enfer: one is a red similar to the Rouge G shade and the other is a gold topper. That’s it for the lips. Promo pics and descriptions are already up online. The collection is called Un Soir à L’Opéra.
Even though it got a bad grade I love how Potent Violet looked in the photo of the whole face. It was very pretty. The Crushed Coral was also pretty. Pity they dont’ get the descriptions right.
It is pretty, just nothing like described, unfortunately!
I really really dislike soapy flavor in lip colors :/
Me too!
Crushed Coral looks nice but I’m really disappointed with Potent Violet. The shimmer is pretty but I wish it was more opaque.
Such a bummer!
