Estee Lauder Commanding Pure Matte Sculpting Lipstick
Estee Lauder Commanding Pure Matte Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a dark burgundy with subtle, cool berry undertones and a natural sheen. There seemed to be very, very fine pearl laced through the color. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque pigmentation, but it had more slip than other shades in the range, which may have been why it applied rather unevenly and looked sheerer on. The color gathered in lip lines noticeably after two hours of wear and was neither hydrating nor drying. MAC Sin (P, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Black Dahlia (10) (LE, $55.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Runner (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty Black Cherry (LE, $24.00) is glossier (90% similar). MAC Lingering Kiss (LE, $19.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). ColourPop LBD (LE, $10.00) is less shimmery, less glossy (90% similar). Estee Lauder Desirous Pure Matte Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, dark burgundy with warm, brown tones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a lightly creamy consistency–less slip than Commanding but more than some of the other shades. It lasted for four hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Maybelline Smoking Red (DC, $7.49) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Tarte Manbun (P, $20.00) is cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Burgundy Blush (P, $7.99) is cooler (90% similar). Estee Lauder Extrovert Pure Matte Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, purpled-berry with neutral-to-cool undertones with a natural sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with moderate slip and a thinner consistency, so it did slide around a bit and looked uneven initially as well as when I just wore it–a very high-maintenance color to wear. It wore well for four and a half hours on me and was lightly hydrating. MAC Instigator (P, $19.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). FORMULA SUMMARY | Estee Lauder Pure Color Matte Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a new formula that features “rich saturated color” with a matte finish that is “luxuriously comfortable.” The formula is comfortable to wear with a light-medium weight consistency that is creamy and smooth with good pigmentation, though some shades are more pigmented than others. They’re more semi-matte to satin, so keep that in mind on whether it aligns with your preference for mattes. They feel slightly hydrating to not drying for the most part. They reminded me of formulas like MAC’s newer Mattes, Urban Decay Matte Revolution, and NARS Audacious.

That stinks – I bet a lot of people had their eyes on Extrovert!
It’s such a cool shade 🙁
Bummer on Commanding and Extrovert! I like Desirous. But, I’m not sure if I love it or not. I would want to see that at the counter. Mac’s Smoked Purple is a nice dupe for Extorvert. I picked that up on a whim recently and was pleasantly surprised!
I was surprised (and disappointed) that they didn’t apply better!
Out of all three, I like Extrovert the best. However, I do wish it were more pigmented.
Agreed!
i almost bought commanding and extrovert the other day. i’m glad i put them back on the shelf…C grades and i have dupes!
Phew!
Wow, I was expecting these Mattes from EL to review better, given their Pure Color Envy line scored pretty well, but burgundy wine and purple lippies are tough to get right. Well, I’m set because I have 3 of the dupes already ( Maybelline Burgundy Blush, Divine Wine, Color Pop Leather) and probably a few more in my stash ! I just love these kinds of colors, and I always use lipliner with darker colors
When they’re good, they’re GREAT! But not all are so nice 🙁
I don’t think they’re difficult to get “right”… As someone who almost exclusively buys DS lip products, and often wears this type of shade (well, I *used* to wear them a lot, but I still often buy them!), I have quite a few that are amazing. NYX does them very well, as Revlon, Milani, Ruby Kisses, L’Oréal… I haven’t purchased anything from Jordana in *ages*, but I know they had some gems, and for only $1, and this was decades ago. WnW is another brand that does them well…
Am I the only one who’s happy Desirous did well/better? It’s the only shade I was really excited about. I’m desirous of Desirous. :}
On a semi related note, I wore Estee Lauder Emotional to a charity event and duuuuude, I got so many compliments, even after eating all kinds of fun goodies at the buffet. Estee Lauder recent lipstick offerings are way better than I remember!
Nice!! I agree that their recent lipsticks have been quite nice!
Aw, I’m a bit surprised that the formula is just so so… I was expecting more from Estée Lauder.
Me too!
Eek! Good thing I’m not a vampy lip kind of guy, otherwise I’d probably be heartbroken.
By the way, I’m really digging the revamped rating/grading system!
Thanks, Andrew! The rating system didn’t change, but the way it is presented has? not sure which you meant but wanted to make sure that there wasn’t any confusion on the rubric itself!
That’s exactly what I meant. It looks great!
Estee Lauder is really trying to shed their “old lady makeup” image LOL. These are some pretty intense and trendy shades for Estee but I like! Especially Desirous and Extrovert. I wish they applied a little better but a part of me still wants them so I’ll be taking a trip to the EL counter at work tomorrow lol
They seem to be trying!
For anyone interested, Revlon Va Va Violet may be a great alternative to Extrovert, and it applies beautifully, for 1/3 the price!
Thanks, Amy!
Although I love the color of Extrovert, the actual formula leaves much to be desired, especially considering how many great dupes there are of it!
Also LOVE Desirous! That brownish undertone is nice and autumnal! It reminds me a bit of MAC Paramount lipstick, but perhaps a touch darker?
I could definitely see some resemblance to Paramount (from memory)!
Desirous reminds me of MAC lip pencil in Auburn. Too bad the purple didn’t fare so well. 🙁
Extrovert is such a cool shade, but I wish it applied better!
wow, they sure don’t look the same color from the tube to when they’re applied! I can save some $$$ since these all look too dark for me.
Those super dark lipsticks tend to apply lighter!
I love the colors, but the performance isn’t what I was expecting from Lauder.
Same — I had higher hopes!
I was hoping these would be better!
Me too, Erin!
Love the Desirous colour – really beautiful and it had a better rating than the others. Although for this price it should be an A!. This lipstick looks gorgeous on you Christine.
They really should be better! 🙁
Bugundy is one of my absolute favorite shades of lipstick, so I have to say that the lack of really good, quality shades out there is heartbreaking. It’s amazing how difficult purplish pigments can be to work with. Though, this post reminds me that Train Bleu is gorgeous and a shade I really need to consider adding to my repetoire.
Train Bleu is well worth a look!
Now I just need NARS Train Bleu. I have Sin and Diva, so I’ll save a bit having good dupes. I liked the colour of all three, but isn’t it a shame about Extrovert!
Train Bleu is a fun one!
I have a question for anyone who’s worked in product development or cosmetic chemistry- how come these types of dark/vampy shades are so hard to get right? Are the pigments harder to work with, do they need a different base, etc. Not trying to hate on Lauder- just genuinely curious why across brands these shades tend to be trouble. Thanks in advance!
Wish I knew!
I love the colors and the direction they are going with the brand ,but they need too update the packaging
This packaging is actually an update!
